MAPLE SHORES COTTAGE RETREAT - Resting on a granite point flanked by maples, spruce and fir, Maple Shores Cottage Retreat offers wonderful views and access to Dyer Harbor and Dyer Bay, access to our expanding trail system through our 43-acre organic woodland farm’s maple grove, wild apple "orchard" and spruce forest. 1800 feet of undeveloped shoreline to explore with several beautiful granite outcroppings and our very own wild blueberry knoll, as well as easy kayak launching just 100 feet from the porch at our spectacular granite and gravel beach.
Private and relaxed, our cottage is 1500 ft from the main road, and located in a wonderfully peaceful walking community situated on the Good’s Point peninsula. Our non-smoking cottage has three bedrooms and will sleep 13 with ease, equipped with three double beds, two twins, a single futon and two sleeper sofas. With two sitting areas complete with a cozy wood stove, a well-equipped pool table room, a galley kitchen with all the modern conveniences, a large bathroom complete with an oversized tub and separate shower, and outside deck, there is plenty of space to relax and enjoy the wonders of our Downeast location. Spacious closets and a wonderful stocking of puzzles, games and videos are available for guest use. Phone service and a handy guide to the area’s activities and destinations are provided to help you plan your adventures.
On the off-chance you should you tire of taking in the natural wonders of Downeast Maine and our farm, satellite TV is provided. Your family pet is welcome to join you at Maple Shores Cottage with prior permission - all dogs must be leashed when enjoying the outdoors for the safety of our farm animals. All linens, towels and blankets are provided, as well as a complimentary basket of goodies from our farm!
Guests are also welcome to visit our main farm center, about 1000 feet from the cottage by trails through the woods, visit our animals, view our gardens and supplement their meals with seasonal fresh fruit, preserves, eggs, yogurt, maple syrup and other treats - all available at our self-serve on-farm store.
Should you venture out, there are many activities right here in our coastal town of Steuben and the neighboring seaside village of Milbridge. Enjoy Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, just five miles down the next peninsula road in Steuben, and featuring over 2100 acres, coastal islands, and open-to-the public blueberry barrens, this is a wonderful spot for self-guided walks and hikes, amazing opportunities for bird watching, and the occasional sighting of moose and bear. Pigeon Hill offers a short and rewarding hike leading to the summit and breathtaking views of the peninsulas, islands and ocean - particularly brilliant during the Fall Foliage season!
On your way to Pigeon Hill and Petit Manaan, be sure to visit the studio of area sculptor and craftsman Ray Carbone, or schedule a massage at Raven’s Retreat. In the village center, Steuben offers a wonderful and charming local library in the historic H.D Moore Parish House -- which now has WiFi, delicious bread and other treats at Wildflour Bakery, galleries and antique shopping. A convenience store and the Portside Restaurant are a convenient four miles away on Route one in Steuben. In Milbridge you will find convenient access to a grocery store, drug store and banking. Also in Milbridge you can stroll down the sidewalks and browse at several gift shops including the very well stocked "The Cinnamon Stick." Here you may also take in a movie at the Milbridge Theater in the evening or grab a bite to eat - there are several eateries in Milbridge, including the local summer favorite "Joshy’s" for the occasional drive-in fish fry and ice cream sundae!
On the nearby Schoodic Peninsula, you will enjoy exploring Schoodic Point (part of Acadia National Park), and local Gouldsboro organic Darthia Farm and Mandala Farm. In South Gouldsboro, Moose Outlook Guide Service offers outdoor adventures and kayak rentals. Jones Pond offers delightful freshwater swimming, a fantastic playground and picnicking. The coastal town of Winter Harbor provides access to ferry service to Nova Scotia and Bar Harbor, and has a beautiful walking village featuring antiques and art galleries, unique shopping, and several eateries including two gourmet dining experiences - Mama Boy’s Bistro and The Fisherman’s Inn. Any item you could ever hope of needing can be found at the Winter Harbor 5 and 10, and the delightful provision store and café, J.M. Gerrish’s, is a wonderful resting point after all your Schoodic Penninsula adventures. Also in Winter Harbor is Hammond Hall, home of the local arts organization Schoodic Arts for All. All through the summer SAFA hosts art, music and theatre events and workshops. Check their website for more information.
Not far from Steuben and to the North there you will find fabulous hiking in the Tunk Preserve - explore Black, Caribou and Schoodic Mountains with trails and adjoining lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, of which Spring River lake in particular offers pristine and private swimming and canoeing. Or visit the famous Bartlett State Winery, on your way to the Schoodic area, featuring delightful fruit wines.
For daytrips, visit Bar Harbor (50 minutes) and Acadia National Park, or traveling East and along the coast you can explore Campobello Island, FDR’s summer home (60 minutes), and Canada (70 minutes) - be sure to bring your passport! Quoddy Head State Park, the easternmost point and lighthouse in the United States, in the same area, is breathtaking and another wonderful hiking destination.
