'Well Adjusted'...a Relaxing Bald Head Home!

  Extended our stay on Bald Head and were lucky enough to find Well Adjusted available for a few days. The owner was great to deal with. Everything was as advertised. Location is close to everything. Would certainly stay here again. Plenty of games and things to do in the house.

  This was our first trip to BHI and 'Well Adjusted' was a great home for our family. Everything was clean and in working order and exactly as depicted in the photos. We felt in the center of everything with the home's central location and loved the screen in side porch with a swinging day bed! We have four small children (ages 2-8) and the child friendly videos and games helped keep everyone entertained even when the weather turned wet. We interacted positively with the owners several times prior to our arrival and they even checked in with us to ensure everything was going well on our first trip to the island. Definitely, would recommend 'Well Adjusted' for a family stay at Bald Head.

  We've been vacationing at the "Well Adjusted" home since it was built and it's always been extremely relaxing. It's a wonderful cozy home and now that we have a 18 month old, it's even cozier. Some of the neighbors live their part-time in the summer and the kids come out to sell lemonade at the end of the street. We love that! It just adds to the experience of being in the south, especially on an island. We've been vacationing on the island since 1995 and have stayed in many homes. I just read the review of the person who stayed there in August 2010 and was very surprised at what I read. Actually, the owner of "Well Adjusted" couldn't have tried harder to make us happy. Maybe it's because we have a good renters relationship with him, but this past time renting he not only gave us the keys to his personal golf carts, but left the owners closets open for us to use whatever we needed. Like I said, maybe we earned the privilege, but the owner is more than welcoming and generous. Another great thing about this home is the location. Not too far from the beach and just perfect for going out to dinner at Eb & Flo or the River Pilot Cafe...or especially the Maritime Market. My wife and I cook at the house a great deal and find the location to the Market is a wonderful bonus! We hope to stay many more years at "Well Adjusted" and Bald Head Island, because it's simply one of the best places on the planet to vacation on the ocean...and we've traveled all over the world!

  My family has been traveling to BHI for several years and love it- the minute you board the ferry you are truly on vacation. Well Adjusted is a finely appointed home and offers everything you need to enjoy your stay, the center island location makes getting to all points of the island quick and easy. A couple of issues: the golf cart situation in the house was not what we had expected, one of the carts was damaged and unsafe to drive and the other was less than ideal compared to what we have experienced with other homes on the island. (The owner had brand new carts in the garage that were only for their use....) Upon arrival we learned that one of the bathrooms was not operational and while it was only a minor issue, managing a family of five with no "kids" bathroom near their bedrooms makes things difficult. Additionally, due to some issues with previous guests the owners instituted some new last minute deposit rules that I found to be less than welcoming, typically owners of BHI homes bend over backwards to make you feel like family when you rent from them but we did not get that from Well Adjusted. Overall, I rate the home very high but due to the anxiety we felt from the home owner I would think carefully before renting this home. No matter what you decide, Bald Head is the perfect spot for family vacations....

  Owner response: Our response to this review is shock & disappointment. Had we known this family experienced any unhappiness, we would have done whatever it took to rectify the situation. This was never communicated in August 2010 and we only knew of these complaints when the review was posted in November, three months after their stay. Firstly, the “damaged” golf cart was in fact, not damaged. It’s a used EZ-Go cart with large tires & elevated shocks. Yes, it’s a bit of a bumpy ride, but in no way unsafe. All of our carts have seat belts & are alway worn by our children. With that said, had it been unusable or had we known the renter was unhappy, we would have provided keys to our new cart, no questions asked. Again, this was not communicated, so we never knew the family was upset. As you consider Well Adjusted for your stay, please know we had four carts at the time. Due to limited garage space, we have taken the cart in question off island and have a brand new Tomberlin and a reliable Club Cart for renters’ use. In response to the other complaints: Stating the bathroom was “unusable” is not accurate. The facts are: The previous renters broke the toilet and did not report this to us during their stay. The damage was discovered upon cleaning the house, only a few hours prior to this families' check-in. Because the toilet needed to be COMPLETELY replaced; one was ordered, shipped on the cargo ferry (which only runs twice a day,) then installed. The biggest appeal of BHI is how isolated it is from the mainland. This makes it a wonderful place to vacation, but makes ever simple home repairs significantly challenging . Unfortunately, installation did not happen for four days into their stay, so I understand it would be an inconvenience to only have two toilets for use. (The sink, tub and shower were still fully functioning.) We updated the family on the progress, but were never told anyone was unhappy. In the five years of renting, we've had three situations where we were required to withhold a portion of the security deposit. Unfortunately, last summer one of our carts was significantly damaged by a renter early in the summer and the $500 deposit did not come close to covering the repairs. Normal use is part of renting our home, but gross damage is difficult to bear. We enjoy sharing our home and love to read in our guestbook of the memories created in it and on BHI. We love our home & ask for anyone who stays there treat it as their own.
