Location: Playa Cofresi, Dominican Republic, Caribbean (30 minutes West of Puerto Plata International Airport (POP))

Accommodations:  House, 4 Bedrooms + Attached Unit, 3 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Villa del Sol has been our Island paradise for many years. Now the Dominican Republic has been discovered and we look forward to sharing this special, still unspoiled treasure with you.

Paulina, your cook/maid/housekeeper will prepare your meals and pamper you with her irrepressible personality. We call her La Professora because she so enjoys teaching her guests Spanish and the local culture.

The house has three bedrooms upstairs and a fourth with bath off the garage which has it's own bath and has just been remodeled.

The Galleria on the top of the house is the center of daily life. The perfect place to start the day with breakfast served by Paulina and certainly the place to end the day watching the sun set and enjoying the island's special drinks.

The beach is out of a picture book. It is a horseshoe shaped cove about three-fourths of a mile long. Wide sandy beach meets the gentle surf. Palm trees line the edges. It is a beehive of activity. People watching at its best.

    • We had a great time. It was the most relaxing, laid-back vacation I think I have ever had. Days lazing in the hammock or on the beach, reading books, doing nothing! We took a couple of tours--the Jeep Safari tour, which was great, especially the waterfall hike. Although I was leery at first of doing the waterfall climb (bad knee), the guides convinced me I would be fine, and I was. Sliding down the falls was exhilirating! We also did the Catamaran snorkel trip. Not great snorkeling compared to other places in the Caribbean, part of which is attributable to the stirred up water from a storm/front a couple days before. We also did a city tour the highlight of which was the fresh fruit from the mercado. Everyone should go there first and buy their fruit for breakfast. The fruit from supermercado was good, but from the mercado was fantastic! Paulina is a treasure! My Spanish is not that great, but she helped me with that a bit; I learned a few new words, and I think she learned a few English words. We let her cook for us most nights (and put in the oven) so we enjoyed many typical Dominican meals (the flan was to die for). Convincing her to go home early when she was finished took a little doing the first time. Teddy's BBQ is, we think, now called Ahora (across the street from Taina Plaza). Although service there was very slow, the food was excellent (my son said he thought it was the best cheeseburger he's had in a long time). We also ate at Chris & Mady's which everyone enjoyed. You might want to mention that there is a casino at Ocean World (entertainment for my adult children), and also that the Ocean World marina has free wi-fi access (which my daughter used several times). Your in-house library was a god-send, since none of us brought enough books with us and liberally partook of the selections in the house (my sister left 2, and took 1 for reading on the plane). Thanks for all the info you provided pre-departure; it was so helpful.

      Homeowner Response:
We couldn't buy the comments we get from our guests. Anyway, it's not us, it's Paulina, Gus, Gabino and all the others who make it such a wonderful experience. We are humbled.

    • What a WONDERFUL place! Our family and another just spent a great week in this villa. Thia is place if you are looking for an awsome experience to stay and relax. Paulina, I have to say, realy made the trip for me. She dosen't speak english wich made it all the more fun. We had so many great laughs while talking (doing charades) with her. We requested that all of our meals be traditional Dominican. You cannot believe the food that this lady creates. By the end of the week we had all eaten till we thought we would burst. However, we seemed to have lost weight. All of our food was fresh, and didn't have any processed food for a week. Not by design, its just the way she cooks. I feel sorry for those who miss out on this wonderful place and the hospitality we experienced through Paulina, Gus, and Gambino. I would highly recommend trusting Gus on his arrangements. He really hooked us up with some great tours. (27 waterfalls, And Banana republic catamaran snorkel trip). Thanks again Joe and Sandy. You really have a gem with your home and staff. • This is the best vacation our family has ever taken. The villa was excellent, Paulina was wonderful. I now expect mango's for breakfast every morning. Gambino arranged everything perfectly, and Gus sent us on great tours. We highly recommend the Jeep Safari tour, and do it your first day, it really set the tone for our whole week. Ask for Rafael as tour guide, he was excellent. Bring school supplies, notebooks, pencils, solar calculators, small toys, baseballs - you'll be stopping a school or small village, those kids really appreciate it. Don't bring candy, dental care is not very good in rural areas. We also did the Catamaran tour - sailing, snorkeling, Presidente beer and Brugal rum, what could be better? The Dominican people were exceptionally friendly. They especially appreciate your attempts at Spanish if you aren't fluent. (Like me) I bought a spanish phrase book a couple of weeks ahead of time and practiced wth my 16 year old daughter, who has had 3 years of Spanish. It really helped with Paulina and around town. A little "Buenos dias" or "Como esta?" really goes a long way. People here don't make a lot of money, so tipping really means a lot to them. We tried to be as generous as possible. On the beaches people will try to sell you things, if you don't want it just politely, firmly say "No, Gracias", they're just trying to make a living. Cofresi is a great little town, Villa del Sol is a short walk from the beach, small shops and restaurants. You can't beat the Ahora's outdoor bar 15 feet from the surf. We walked around day and night here and felt completely safe. Joe Thompson was extremely helpful and sent us great information to help us plan ahead. Hasta Luego!

    • We just returned (July29th-Aug.5th) from the Villa del Sol and had the best vacation that we have experienced yet. Paulina made the most delicious meals and was a joy. Gus, Gabino and the other helpers made sure we scheduled the tours we wanted. The Jeep Safari was excellent. I would suggest to buy the CD of the tour. It captures the whole experience. The people were warm and helpful. The restaurants had excellent meals and were reasonably priced. My daughter loved the cable cars, I loved the horseback riding on the beach. It was the best. We had 6-7 people stay comfortably. The beach was great. The kids loved snorkeling. Thank you all for a great week. We will miss you. We will be back. God Bless you all, Mary Hughes

    • Our February trip to the Dominican Republic was the perfect getaway from the unoredictable cold of February in the NorthEast. With two kids under 5 years and a pregnant mom, it was great to have the convenience of a house plus the help of Paulina to keep the food coming! An added bonus was having Ocean World just a short walk from our cozy street. Though the immediate neighborhood was low-key, it was easy to go out for any meal and, of course, the ocean was just a short walk away. We will definately be returning!

    • It's been a week since we got back from the Dominican Republic, and we are missing it terribly. Your villa was the perfect getaway! Paulina, Juana and Gambino were a pleasure to meet. They were so helpful: all our questions were answered, we were so well taken care of, and the food was nothing short of paradise. One of the best things we got to do on the trip was to climb (or be pulled up) seven waterfalls, which was preceded by a really educational tour of some interesting aspects of dominican life (grinding coffee in a wooden mortar, dominican sculpture and art, cockfighting, and a HUGE bull). I would strongly recommend everyone who visits to go on the tour, and to bring gifts and stationary to the children you will see along your way. We didn't bring anything with us and regretted it. Thank you so much for accommodating our huge party of 11 and being a great correspondent. We are so grateful for having had the opportunity to stay at Villa Del Sol. I have been recommending it to my friends and we can't wait to make another trip back!

    • We just returned for a stay of over two weeks at Villa del Sol with our four-year old son. A wonderful time was had by all. The house is comfortable, Paulina is great, and the beach is beautiful. Joe (the owner) was very helpful and accessible as we were planning our trip, providing plenty of good information and guidance, and Gabino (on-site manager) also could not have been more helpful. We also enjoyed the nearby restaurants and attractions, including a day at Sea World where we had a really nice time. In fact, we found it much better than we expected, so all-in-all, it was worth the steep admission fee. We did a city tour of Puerto Plata which was also worthwhile, but bear in mind that the Cathedral and central square in Puerto Plata are currently closed (boarded up) and this fact was not mentioned by any people or guidebooks consulted. In summary, all I can say is if we return to D.R. (and we probably will), we would definitely stay again at Villa del Sol. Genevieve D. Saskatoon, SK Canada

    • Hey Joe- Thanks for an awesome week! We stayed the week of December 1-8 and had a total blast. You made the whole rental process very easy and the info you provided was very helpful. We had our entire vacation planned before we arrived! Here's some info for people considering staying at Villa Del Sol: There were 6 adults and we had plenty of room. Paulina and Maria were absolutely fabulous. My brother and his girlfriend are veggies and she made a special little dish for them every night. The beach was beautiful and very relaxing. I highly recommend taking the jeep tour. The tour as a whole was a lot of fun and the waterfalls are something I will never forget. Horsebackriding was also awesome and totally worth the $30 you pay for it. The cable car to the mountaintop was nice, but do it on your own- skip the rest of that tour. I would absolutely go again and you should too:)
