Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1990
Tom & Kathy are retired from careers in teaching and school social work. We now enjoy New Mexico in the winter and Northport, Michigan, in the summer. We love to share our "little piece of heaven", with our guests. When you stay at the Tree House you are family, too!
Why the Owner Chose Northport
We first came to Northport when Tom's brother-in-law became the pastor of the Northport Trinity Church. This was in the early 1970's. Then Tom's parents bought the Captain's Cottage, in town, and his sister built a cottage in Omena. We were last to build a home in 1995. We've been enjoying our forest home ever since.
The Unique Benefits of this Studio
This unique area of the Leelanau Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places we have ever lived. We have 42 acres of mature hardwood forest to roam, and we adjoin hundreds of acres of state land to our west. Very private. We are located close to many outdoor activities (hiking, biking, boating, scenery, etc.) Also, there are numerous shops, wineries, casinos, and indoor activities between Northport and Traverse City. We have the best of both worlds here in northern Leelanau County.

Clean, comfortable, quiet, cozy place. We were close to all the sites, but far away from all the congestion and noise. Tom was a great host, payment by check was all on the up and up, old school ways. We love vacationing with our dog, and she enjoyed the trails and beaches as much as we did. Everything worked as described, electric grill was a pleasant surprise. We would stay here again, real good deal for us.

Thank you Tom and Kathy for an amazing vacation. We truly had a great time. The Tree House was exactly as pictured, and the bed was perfect. We experienced so much...Empire for the beach, Christmas Cove for the beach and rocks, Peterson Park for the rocks (the only thing climbing back up the stairs with our "rocks" we felt like we were on the biggest loser). Leland, Sutton's Bay and Glen Arbor, Sleeping Bear Dunes. The time on the beach, shopping and the awesome food we had was exactly what we needed. Clam strips at Fischers were amazing and all the food we had was awesome. Ending our night at the garage was also fun, getting to know the locals and the band. The deer we saw on two occasions sitting out on the deck and the scenery was so relaxing. We were very comfortable in the tree house, plenty room for both of us. You both were amazing hosts, but as you know we were up and gone every day for a fun filled day. We did also get to hear the coyotes one night. Thank you very much for sharing this week with us and we will come back. Steve and Andra

Amazing Property, Wonderful Hosts, and a Beautiful Setting

Tom and Kathy's Tree House Studio actually EXCEEDED our expectations - we had one of the most restful, enjoyable vacations ever when we stayed here for a week during the end of June 2011. The property itself was a spacious, wooded site that was truly quiet, peaceful, and private. The studio itself was clean and well-appointed - it's very clear that Tom and Kathy are very proud of their home (which they had designed themselves). They really have put a lot of thought in what they provide for their guests, and the place itself is clean and spotless. The bed - a wonderful king-size Tempur-pedic - provided us with some of the best sleep, especially when combined with the incredible quiet and nature sounds from the surrounding woods. Tom and Kathy make it a point to allow renters to have their complete privacy. In a funny twist of fate, our car broke down 40 minutes away from the Tree House. And this is where no hotel or other VRBO place can compare to Tom and Kathy: Tom and Kathy, with kindness and good humor, drove out 40 minutes to rescue us, drove us back to the Tree House Studio along with good conversation and wonderful roadside commentary on what we should visit once our car was fixed, and then arranged for us to ride with them into Traverse City (which was where our car was towed to) so we could pick up our car. Getting to know Tom and Kathy was actually a real gift in the midst of our vacation - we really appreciated their genuine kindness and thoughtfulness. Tom and Kathy truly are wonderful people - and that's some very strong reassurance to have when you commit to renting a place for at least a week. The Tree House Studio is close to everything. Before and after our car broke down, we enjoyed all of the wineries, beaches, lake views, and cherries available in the area. The studio itself has Direct TV, and we had a great time watching movies late at night, eating smoked fish and drinking wine we had purchased earlier in the day. There really isn't a lack of activities to be had around the Tree House Studio - and you can just stay at the Studio all day too! We will definitely be coming back to the Tree House Studio - it's a special place in a beautiful setting with, most importantly, wonderful hosts. We had a memorable time here. Tom and Kathy - a huge thank you to you both! See you soon!
Owner response:Thank you for being such great renters, Monica & Deokhyo. We really enjoyed having you stay at the Tree House. Glad to be of assistance when you were stranded in Glen Arbor. That's not something that happens to our renters, very often, but we are here if you need us. We'd do it again... "in a heartbeat". Please come back and visit. Tom & Kathy

We spent three nights in early October and absolutely loved it. The leaves were so colorful, and the owners, Tom and Kathy, couldn't have been nicer to us and our Lab puppy, Sam. The spacious woods are great for taking quiet walks, and the "hidden" Adirondack chairs are a perfect place to read a book and enjoy nature. We'd definitely like to return sometime.

(Unedited from our guest book) Tom & Kathy, Already so many good things have been said about the fantastic Tree House, the area, the food, etc. (in your guest book). To add just a little more, we loved the apartment; the freedom that comes with coming and going without having to disturb anyone. Your property is beautiful and perfectly maintained. You both are so kind and friendly, to the point that it is a little disappointing to leave. I really don't think we could have asked for a better place, or time, to vacation. We thank you for more than we can possibly express. Karen & Brian

We truly enjoyed our stay at the treehouse with our dog. There are nice long paths throughout the property and a platform with comfortable chairs deep within the woods. Coyotes were heard at night. The bed was comfortable and the tree house was well appointed. It's located down a long winding driveway in the forest. We drank coffee and used the wifi at Brew North in Northport. Nearby Peterson Park overlooks Lake Michigan with a fabulous view for sunset and Christmas Cove is a good swimming spot, both of which are free. Eat Spot offered great carry-out food. The owner offers a useful basket of menus, area guides and brochures, and a detailed map of all of the back roads and region's attractions.

My husband and I stayed in the Treehouse cabin on our recent stay in Northport for our one year anniversary vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Treehouse. It was nestled away in the woods and afforded great privacy. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed, and was convenient to all the activities we wanted to enjoy in the area. Tom and Kathy were great - they respected our privacy, but were always there for any questions we had. My parents are considering a vacation to the area soon - I will strongly recommend the Treehouse to them too!

What a wonderful treat to stay at such a well-maintained apartment for a week of relaxation! I brought my dog, Briee, with me and the Treehouse was a wonderful accomodation from which to launch out from for our daily exploration of the Leelanau peninsula. The description of the apartment is spot on and the price is right. Tom Larkin was very helpful and friendly. This place will definitely be on my "must do again" list.
