Portsmouth house description

c1750 Antique Colonial waterfront home in Portsmouth's south end. The neighborhood is known for its exquisitely renovated historic homes and this one is no exception. The homes here are mostly on small lots and close together but don't let this fool you. This home is perfectly situated on the lot for tremendous privacy and beautiful river views. You will most likely spend most of your time out of doors or in the beautifully renovated large river room / family entertainment room with cathedral ceilings and glass doors that open to a covered back porch. The yard is a professionally landscaped pocket-garden leading to the dock, and is completely private with tables and chairs, a grilling area, and plenty of outdoor storage space.

Top of the line appliances are located in the exquisitely designed custom kitchen with soapstone and butcher-block counters. It is truly a chef’s dream kitchen with a Viking commercial-style gas range (with separate water faucet for those large Lobster Pots!), a Sub-Zero refrigerator, dishwasher, wine cooler, and even a fireplace with a Beehive oven. A custom built-in table with benches will accommodate everyone.

There is a half-bath located off the kitchen, and the first floor bedroom is at the front of the house with a queen bed.

Up the circa 1750 winding staircase you will find the master bedroom to the right with another queen bed.

Opposite the master, is the third bedroom (or sitting room) with gorgeous water views from every window. This bedroom has a new futon couch that can fold out to be used as a bed for one (adult) or two (children). There is a washer/dryer in the closet for easy use.

The full bath upstairs has been beautifully renovated.

The house was professionally designed and has all new furniture throughout and beautiful hardwood floors. There is an additional full-size washer and dryer in the basement as well.

The bottom line: park your car and walk or bike everywhere. Or boat! You have your own dock. Please note that the Piscataqua River and its environs are for serious, experienced boaters. Not that kind of boater? Kayak or paddleboard right off your dock. Or just sit on the dock and watch the boats go by. The house is located on a back channel so there is NOT a lot of boating activity right outside your door. It is a quiet place, tucked away from the busy boating areas but accessible to the open ocean by an experienced sailor.

                  Car: Not Necessary

Portsmouth, NH, one of the oldest settlements in the country (1623) has a very rich waterfront history, and is still an active working port. From this prime riverfront location near the Strawbery Banke Museum in the south end, you are a simple walk away from everything.

How about beginning with buying fresh lobsters just outside your door at one of the best lobster companies in the area? Or walk to their fabulous market around the corner and order them cooked. In addition to their fresh seafood, the market also carries everything else you might need for your stay. Make sure you visit the boutique wine shop right next door. Around the next corner is a locally owned small marina that also rents kayaks and paddleboards. Just steps further is an exquisite waterfront store/café offering breakfast and lunch on the water. It is also a fully stocked marina with bait, rods, charts, block ice, even summer clothing & accessories. And another long-time café just next door with a very rich history!

You’re a short walk from Prescott Park, the location of the city’s beautiful waterfront public park and gardens, and home of the premier outdoor Prescott Park Music and Arts Festival. You will be amazed at the list of national and international musical entertainment, first-rate theater productions, and outdoor films, including productions for children. There is no fixed admission—a suggested donation of $5–$10. Bring your lawn chairs (we supply) and have a picnic while watching some of the best entertainment in the northeast.

You are also minutes—within walking distance—from downtown Portsmouth, a city of approximately 21,000 with big-city amenities in a smaller more intimate environment. This past summer Portsmouth was featured in the New York Times Travel Section: “36 Hours in Portsmouth, NH,” (August 1, 2013). We know that Portsmouth has been a hot destination for a very long time and has been listed on many “best of” lists. Your hosts will give you the inside scoop on how to enjoy the city as us locals do every day.

Portsmouth has become a culinary destination with hundreds of restaurants (the last list was 175) as diverse as you can imagine. The waterfront dining is only one incredible aspect of it. You can enjoy the freshest seafood, authentic French, Italian, Thai and Mexican to name only a few. If you like fine dining, it is here. If you like smaller, more intimate venues, you got it. Brew pubs? You bet. Burger joints? Absolutely. There is also no shortage of soup and sandwich shops, Irish pubs, British pubs, you name it.

Stop and grab a drink, watch the sun set, and hear some top-notch music as well. Portsmouth has always been a mecca for musicians and many of our talented locals tour nationally. Again, your hosts will give you the real scoop depending on your personal preferences.

My personal favorites? The bakeries and coffee shops. They are absolutely unbelievable and are all quite unique. You can walk around this town for the entire day eating, drinking, and enjoying the widest variety of establishments.

Another source of Portsmouth pride are the three independent bookstores within blocks of each other. Other boutique shops to name only a few: jewelry, clothing, candy, ice cream, toys, cards and stationery, health foods, fabric stores, and more.

History buffs will be unable to choose their adventure because again, there are so many choices. We mentioned Strawbery Banke but there are many historic buildings to tour and museums to peruse.

Portsmouth is truly an arts and cultural adventure. The galleries and entertainment options are first-class and varied. The Music Hall, our 1878 downtown historic Victorian theater has curated entertainment from around the world. Their newer smaller venue, The Music Hall Loft provides the same in a more intimate setting. And that is only one of our many cultural venues including: The Player’s Ring, The Seacoast Repertory Theatre, the West-End Studios and more.

You do not need a car for this vacation. If you have one, park it and walk or bike everywhere. Or boat! You have your own dock. Boats are docked up and down the river. The Piscataqua River and its environs are for serious, experienced boaters. Not that kind of boater? Kayak or paddleboard right off your dock. Or just sit on the dock and watch the boats go by. The house is located on a back channel so there is not a lot of boating activity right outside your door. It is a quiet place, tucked away from the busy boating areas but accessible to the open ocean with the proper boat.

Beautiful, pristine beaches are very close by. New Castle Common beach is only a five-minute drive (or bike ride). Rye Beach is fifteen minutes away.

If you like to do more sightseeing, there are numerous day trips. Portsmouth is very conveniently located. A short walk over the brand new Memorial Bridge and you are in Maine, which has some beautiful beaches you can drive to as well.

                  Get packing.
