Why visit Shanti?
Shanti means peace
Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning peace, rest, calmness, tranquility and bliss. Its broader meaning is “inner peace,” a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace. Owner Elizabeth Medgyesy says, “My goal is to create a vessel of inner peace and transformation through the nature of Shanti. Many people have told me in the past that this land radiates peace and tranquility. Perhaps it is because of the abundant sunshine – so uncommon in this ecosystem of dense Redwood trees. Perhaps it is because this is the site of the original farmhouse of the area, situated above monolithic rocks with three natural springs emanating from them.” Shanti means peace, and peace comes from being in the natural environment of Shanti.
Location, location, location
Coleman Valley Road is known as the most beautiful road in Sonoma County. Shanti is located directly on incredible Coleman Valley Road and only a short two-mile drive, bike ride or a lovely traffic-free walk from the lovely hamlet of Occidental with its shops, video store/internet café, famous Italian/French/Breakfast restaurants and locally-owned gift and organic food markets. The drive from Occidental to Shanti affords beautiful views of Mount Saint Helena and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains to the east. But it is further west that attracts so many visitors. The remaining eight miles from Shanti to the ocean are a shockingly narrow, curvy and spectacularly panoramic drive unparalleled in Sonoma County. Forested landscapes of a varied ecosystem of deciduous oaks, Redwoods and Douglas firs give way to sudden vistas of meadows and a sometimes fog-shrouded ocean that stretches into eternity. The drive to the coast takes about 35 minutes, but you’ll stop to take pictures all along the way. This is the number one scenic attraction of the area, and directions are easy: Just take a left out of our driveway!
In addition, Shanti is neighbors with the highly acclaimed Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC), Western Hills Garden, Willow Creek Nature Preserve with its miles of hiking and biking trails, dozens of wineries, Osmosis Day Spa with its world-renowned Cedar Enzyme Bath, restaurants, cheese shops, bakeries, brewpubs, zip lines, kayaking and canoeing. Archery lessons can also be arranged in Elizabeth’s backyard.
The area around Occidental is gratefully and gracefully populated with ancient Redwood trees. However, these gorgeous behemoths impart a great deal of shade to many residences and vacation rentals. Thankfully, Shanti is located on the site of the original farmhouse of the area due to its three natural springs and the hillside above it was cleared many years ago for orchards that are now defunct. We therefore are blessed with a glorious amount of sunshine interspersed with shady trees on strategic locations such as the driveway and Shanti's private back deck. Occidental’s microclimate is coastal and cool with fog in the summer mornings, so you will be very glad to have Shanti’s sunshine especially if you visit us in the off-season months.
Shanti is doubly blessed to have both sunshine and water. Our water here comes from three natural springs. We suggest you use our spring water for everything but drinking. We will provide you with ample potable drinking water in the refrigerator of the unit. Please know that we will ask you to avidly conserve our most precious resource of water. Please no long showers or running water while washing dishes or brushing teeth.
Shanti’s décor is “Contemporary Bohemian.” No wood paneling or dark walls here! We have decorated in vacation bright colors like marine blue, apricot yellow, classic red and an orange that will knock your socks off in the Tantric bedroom! Fun, swanky, sexy and spiritually uplifting describes the décor. Owner Elizabeth has traveled to 45 countries around the world and many of the eclectic décor, such as the Buddha statues and Thangkha wall hangings, come from her extensive travels to Asia. The bamboo tiger stripe floor is always a hit…it is so visually beautiful and exciting! Subtle lighting and Asiatic accents complete the Shanti experience. Elizabeth has completely redone the back yard of Shanti to be a private and peaceful place for you to relax in the dappled sunlight, swing in the Brazilian hammock, read a book or just nap and listen to the birds in the surrounding trees.
Your comfort at Shanti is of the utmost importance. To this end, we provide a luxurious queen bed with Sealy Posturepedic pillow top mattress, silky sheets, down comforters and plush pillows. In addition, a full sized futon couch in the living room can sleep two. Lastly, for those who want a bit of adventure, sleeping on the queen mattress in the camper is the answer. In all, Shanti can sleep six adults in separate “rooms.”
Shanti is now provided with high speed internet service, as well as cell phone service. Be sure to download the Sonos App to hear your iPod's tunes or Pandora.
Pets and Children
Well-behaved pets and children are always welcome at Shanti. Children will naturally resonate with the natural world within Shanti as they play in the fenced backyard, or in the pasture with Elizabeth’s two spaniels Libby and Lucy, or in the Redwood forests that encompass a third of the 6.5 acres of Shanti. Fish are stocked in the pond and catching one is always a fun challenge (poles provided--adult supervision required).

Occidental may be one of the least-known yet cutest little towns in western Sonoma County, if not all of Northern California. This small place, with a two-block-long main street is a perfect place for a relaxing escape, and it's only a 90-minute drive from San Francisco.
Founded in 1876 when the railroad went in, Occidental began as a commercial center, but soon became popular with vacationers looking to escape San Francisco's fog or Central Valley heat. Two Italian restaurants were founded a few years later and they still vie for diners, sitting across the street from each other.
Occidental is popular for quiet, relaxing weekend getaways. It's great for a romantic escape, or just to unwind.
Occidental is far enough inland to avoid the dreaded 'June gloom' that keeps oceanside communities under a shroud of day-long fog in early summer, and almost any time is a good time to go. On winter weekdays, you'll find it particularly quiet.
Osmosis Day Spa: Just five minutes drive from Occidental in the even tinier town of Freestone, this Japanese-style spa offers unusual enzyme baths, massages, beautiful gardens and other relaxing experiences. Make it your first stop and you'll feel de-stressed all weekend long. They're often open as late as 9:00 p.m., so for maximum relaxation make an early escape and stop on your way.
5 Great Things to Do in Occidental
• Browse and Shop: Occidental's main street is only two blocks long, but you'll find some nice shops along it, selling handmade crafts, interesting imports and nice art work.
• Occidental Farmers Market: Held Fridays from 4:00 p.m. until dusk, June through October.
• Musical Interlude: The Redwood Arts Council hosts regular chamber music concerts in the Community Church, praised for its excellent acoustics.
• Zip Through the Forest Canopy: Take a zipline through the treetops with Sonoma Canopy Tours.
• Wine Tasting: The area around Occidental and Freestone is coming to be recognized as one of the best places to grow pinot noir grapes in California. Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards have their own tasting room in Freestone. The WildFlour Bakery is right next door, famous for its giant-sized sticky buns.
Other points of interest just minutes from Shanti include Western Hills Rare Plant Nursery (Coleman Valley Rd., 707-874-3731), Wishing Well Nursery (Bohemian Hwy., 707-823-3710), and Occidental Art and Ecology Center, 707-874-1557).
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: Elizabeth has been in the tourism industry since 1991, when she started her own tour company, 'EcoTours of Oregon' in Portland, Oregon. After eight years, she decided to make use of her extensive knowledge of traveling in Asia, yoga and Buddhist philosophy by founding 'Spirit Travel,' during which time she operated spiritual pilgrimage tours to Indian, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Elizabeth is also a world traveler extraordinairre, having visited 45 countries around the globe. Her last two-month trip in 2013 was to Cambodia and Laos; her next trip will be trekking in Nepal this fall with her sister Cathy. Elizabeth has finally decided to buy some furniture and (more or less) settle down for a time. She now lives peacefully with her two Field Spaniels Libby and Lucy and her two cats Buster and Princeza on the 6.5 acres available to Shanti Vacation Rental. Elizabeth is also a talented Certified Massage Therapist who works out of her home studio and the highly-acclaimed Osmosis Day Spa in nearby Freestone. She enjoys both road and mountain bike riding, walking on the beach with her dogs, all types of music, world travel and singing in the local Occidental Community Choir as a soprano.
Why the Owner Chose Occidental:
Elizabeth purchased this property because it had the two things she desired most: her own source of water and old growth redwood trees. She has lived here since December 31, 2009. The land was consecrated in ceremony by a group of friends who walked the perimeter in the pouring rain, blessing and leaving offerings to the four directions. Shanti Home is her brainchild, and operates only under the strictest environmentally-friendly guidelines, including water conservation, recycling, composting, permaculture landscape design, organic farming, low use of fossil fuels, 36 solar energy panels on the roof, absence of toxic cleaning chemicals and purchase of locally made products whenever possible. Shanti Home was named due to the incredibly peaceful energy felt by many who have visited this land. Help us to add to this good energy, and visit us soon!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The biggest asset of Shanti is the 'peaceful, easy feeling' one gets from being here. We are void of light pollution and noise pollution; all is silent on this stretch of Coleman Valley Road aside from the occasional car or bike rider passing below us. Instead, we hear frogs up in the pond, birds chirping in the morning and an occasional coyote screetch at dusk. With plenty of room to roam and run, this land is a dog's dream and Elizabeth heartily welcomes your friendly and well-behaved dogs to Shanti to play with her Field Spaniels Libby and Lucy. Play fetch with sticks in the pond or walk through our backyard to the famous Grove of the Old Trees with grandmother Redwoods hundreds of years old. If massage is your desire, Elizabeth can help you to work out those sore muscles on site -- its so nice to simply walk back to your room or the hammock in your private backyard afterwards! Couples massage can also be arranged with prior notice for you and your sweetie to receive and melt next to one another simultaneously.
