Adios to Spring Break, Hello Spring. It's definitely here. Fields are greening, buds are breaking open, color appears. Taos has four definite seasons, Spring is definitely one of the good ones. And Serenity is a very good place to bring it in.
A recent guest described 'Serenity' as 'a small NYC loft transplanted to a mountain paradise garden. It's perfect for the adventurous who want a different experience from "condo within walking distance to the plaza." Which is also fun, I highly recommend it. But that's not this place.
It is our great pleasure to make this very cool compound available to you.

Serenity: peace of mind: isn't that what we all want? Here's an opportunity to experience peace of mind here in your own elegant private separate building surrounded by lovely mountain views and extensive flower gardens.
Located in a small, historic farm / ranch neighborhood ('Talpa') just off the road from Santa Fe, about fifteen minutes south of downtown. We're at a kind of node or hub in Taos which puts us about equidistant between Taos Ski Valley to the north, Angel Fire and Sipapu to the east and southeast.
Which is not only great for the winter, but even better in the other three seasons.. All three of those ski resort roads (588, 64 and 518) just happen to pass through some of the most gorgeous mountain country you ever saw. Right off these same roads are numerous access trailheads: easy gateways to hiking, biking, fishing, or just river rambling under the pines.
Taos County offers way more roads and trailheads prime for the exploration besides these, of course. It's a good way to get started, though.
Same goes for other kinds of recreational undertakings. Between here and downtown are most of the shopping, arts, commercial and dining opportunities Taos offers. Not that you should neglect all that territory north of Taos Plaza, there be good stuff up there too.
But again, the point being, you can get anywhere you want quickly. You'll be amazed at how we can be so centrally located and yet so quiet and private.
The space itself:
One of its best features, among many, is its flexibility. It offers both spaciousness and intimacy. The studio provides a roomy comfortable communal area and the adjacent kitchen with its big tables doubles for not only food prep but rec room (Monopoly? Art projects?) And the loft works for getting away from everybody as well as for superlative sleeping, especially on rainy nights.
Up to six people can enjoy sweet mountain dreams with choice of standard queen mattress downstairs, new convertible couch (with memory foam) in loft upstairs, or on the pull-out couch. Extra blankets, pillows at hand. Aerobed twin-size inflatables available. Foam jigsaw-style 'dojo' mats snap together for your morning stretch. Ample privacy curtains.
Loft is easily accessible via Doug's beautiful hand-built stairs and is a powerful kid magnet. Also is a romantic hideaway with beautiful views of Taos Mountain and the surrounding foothills.
Or just a good place to check your email. If you insist.

Relax, breathe deep, spread out inside an open space design with high ceilings and big sunny windows. Plenty of room to lay out your gear: Play - work - scheme - dream.
Lean, green, dander and odor-free. No pesticides or herbicides used inside, outside or anywhere else on the property. No scented cleaning or "freshening" products, fabric softeners or industrial chemicals. No need to stray far from soap, water, vinegar and an occasional drop or two of essential oils. It's relatively sparse and clear, no "poof" for miles. Big windows open wide.
A word on Pets: many people travel with their beloved 4-leggeds, we lose business with a pet-free policy. But we believe that many other people value a dander-free, non-allergenic space. We offer an immaculate sleeping / cooking / entertaining arena; this is a major amenity.
Having said that, you should know that we are owned by two house cats in the yard. You'll probably see them around.
Reliable Wi-Fi. Also, "smart" DVD setup with monitor and a binder full of movies. Bring your Netflix password along with your devices. No cable. Movie rental store just around the corner with guest arrangements possible.
Utility room with full-sized HE washer/drier, wooden drying rack for parkas etc, hanging rod, bedding shelving. Ironing board and iron available upon request.

We the owners live and work here on these 1.5 acres full-time, have been here since April Fool's Day 1996. We raised our two sons here, now ages 30 and 26.
Farm Kitchen: 600 sq. ft. of modern, full-sized appliances, artfully-painted concrete floors, wooden country dining table. Great for entertaining family, friends, clients. Quite an amazing room, actually. Cooks will immediately recognize its goodness.
One lovely Labor day we enjoyed a full weekend of food preparation with two of our guests. Together we bottled (and sampled) a new apple / plum wine blend, processed a burlap bag of fresh-roasted chiles, and cranked up a batch of peach ice cream from peaches just picked from one of our trees just off the kitchen door.
Nothing dissolves barriers between strangers faster than peeling hot green chile on a hot August afternoon!. It's part of why we all so enjoy the vacation rental concept.
You don't HAVE to cook in the Kitchen. I recycle a lot of take-out boxes. Why cook when you can pick up a delectable breakfast burrito with your coffee, just down the street? You're on vacation, right? You're also in Taos, NM, Restaurant Heaven. I enjoy playing the concierge role, and recommend a lot of restaurants to a lot of people, but I'm realizing that it doesn't matter where you go eat, it will be delicious.
Outdoors: extensive edible landscaping, trees, grass lawns and perennial flower borders offer one of the most beautiful hidden gardens in Taos. Or so we modestly claim. Wander and enjoy.
We grow most of the fruit that will grow here: apples, cherries, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, grapes, currants, chokecherries and elderberries. Have been known to add yeast and sugar to use up the bounty.
It should be said that our gardens aren't really playgrounds. Much of it is working for a living. We also grow a lot of rocks along with the snowball viburnum and tomatoes, watch your step out there. "Manicured" is not the word. However, our lovely front lawn beckons a blanket, and bare feet delight in the wooly thyme out back. For active kids needing to move: take them into the mountains or a river, just down the road! We provide many pages of suggestions for the many places kids can run, climb, swim, skate, play frisbee golf: check the House Guestbook or the Hospitality Manager app. or ask.
If you're here between March and October, you'll have a chance to be among the fortunate few to experience an genuine colonial-era irrigation system called the "acequia" (ah say key ah). It's what makes it possible for Serenity to be such an oasis here in this high mountain desert country.

We're in a small rural neighborhood on a maintained county dirt road easily accessible to the two main roads heading into town.
You're within 15 minutes of everything you could desire, from hiking to shopping to fine dining to museums.

About the owner: Originally from West Texas (El Paso and San Angelo,) lived many years throughout East Coast (New York, Maryland, North Carolina) before returning to native bioregion of Texas / New Mexico.
We live on site, working as video producers, photographers, writers, and developers of alternative energy projects.
Why the Owner Chose Taos: We honeymooned in Taos in November, 1981. We could have saved a lot of time and money if we had just stayed here instead of returning to Dallas. We finally arrived 'home' on April Fool's Day 1996. This property started as a rental, we made it our own a year later and have been working on it ever since.
