Some of the most diverse and beautiful beaches in the world lie within a few short miles of the resort, so there will be more than enough variety for beach enthusiasts. Many of the most beautiful bay-side beaches are only a 5 minute drive. Brewster offers 7 family friendly bay-side beaches that recede out over a mile at low tide offering a unique view of sandbars, clam beds, and tidal pools which normally remain hidden under the surface. Many other ocean side beaches, including the spectacular Nauset Beach, are less than 10 miles away.
The popular Cape Cod Rail Trail which runs directly through the Ocean Edge property and bike rentals are available on-site. The trail meanders approximately 25 miles through an ever changing landscape of forests, freshwater ponds and cranberry bogs. There really is something for everyone in Cape Cod from the outdoor enthusiast to the dedicated shopper; the Cape has something for you.
The jewel of the Cape has to be the Cape Cod National Seashore. People who want to get the most out of their trip to the National Seashore should consider beginning their visit at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. It offers valuable information on what it has to offer and how to best see it all. There are countless beaches in the Cape but two of the best can be found at the tip. The massive north facing Race Point Beach gets sun all day and is best suited to good swimmers as it has colder water and stronger currents than a lot of Cape beaches. On the more placid bay side, the family friendly Herring Cove Beach has been named one of America’s Best All-Time Beaches by Region by the Travel Channel.
While you are in Provincetown be sure to stop by the Pilgrim Monument. At 353 feet, it is the tallest all granite structure in the United States. The panoramic view from the top is simply stunning. If an even better few is desired, the more daring members of your group could stop by the Provincetown Airport for a Bi-Plane ride. The less adventuresome can sample the eclectic shops of Commercial Street. Provincetown also boasts The Whydah Pirate Museum, home of the only authentic pirate shipwreck treasure in the world.
Other outdoor activities include horseback riding at Emerald Hollow Farms in Brewster just a few minutes from the condo. A little further away, wine buffs can tour the Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod. Playing at small fields in various nearby locations, the Cape Cod Baseball League provides family friendly entertainment at a very low cost. More than 950 Major League players have spent time in the Cape Cod League including Ron Darling, Robin Ventura, Cris Carpenter and Billy Wagner. The Brewster Whitecaps play locally at the Stony Brook Elementary School. Stop by and see some of the stars of tomorrow up close and personal.
The Cape also has a number of museums that are definitely worth seeing. The Heritage Museum and Gardens is the largest public garden in Southern New England. It is located on 100 acres of magnificent grounds and trails in Sandwich. It also displays more than 30 antique automobiles in a giant circular barn and has working historic carousel that has been serving riders for more than 100 years. My wife and I have been there several times and it is definitely worth the trip. Closer to the condo, Brewster has the well regarded Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Another option is the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum which focuses on the legacy of the former President and his deep connection to the Cape.
Whale watching is another possibility. Two of the more popular are the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch out of Provincetown or the Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruise out of West Barnstable. If you are like my wife and prefer seals, you can try the Blue Claw Boat Tours Seal Cruise that operates out of nearby Orleans. For more aquatic attractions, explore the Wood Hole Science Aquarium and/or the world famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Train enthusiasts can try the Cape Cod Central Railroad. Located on Main Street in Hyannis, it has a variety of shoreline and dinner excursions along its 46 miles of track. Devotees of the theater can try the Cape Cod Playhouse in Dennis or the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans.
Another long time staple of the Cape is miniature golf. Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf in South Yarmouth has earned the status of “Best Family Attraction” for the entire state from Boston Magazine and it really is a lot of fun for all ages. Nearby Bass River Sports World on Route 28 in South Yarmouth offers exceptional mini golf as well as Go Karts, batting cages, a golf driving range and much more.
One more treasure of the Cape is the Wellfleet Drive-in. One of 4 remaining working Drive-in Theaters in Massachusetts; it offers you a chance to show your children a fast disappearing bit of our history while enjoying an evening of current entertainment. It is a rare opportunity that should not be missed.
Last but not least, the Cape has innumerable art galleries and shopping locations to browse at your leisure. From the downtown shops of Chatham to the traditional Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis, you can find whatever it is you are looking for. Come to the Cape once and you will see why so many people come back year after year.
