This artsy riverside cottage perched high on the Boquet river banks beckons all to come enjoy the view from the OVERLOOK PATIO. Equipped with comfy outdoor seating, fire pit, gas grill & umbrella, you need only yourself to lie & commune with the sounds of the river, as it makes its way downstream. Peaceful, relaxing & refreshing might be some words used to describe this wonderful scene. Get to know what DOING NOTHING feels like!
This fully furnished 3 bedroom, 2 bath, “vintage” home, built in 1877, has been restored to a state of the art vacation destination in the lovely village of Willsboro, New York. This picturesque, coastal water community lies at the foot of the Adirondack Park. Therefore, it benefits from having water frontage on Lake Champlain & also being part of the great Adirondack High Peaks region!
LOGISTICS are one of the strongest points of Willsboro N.Y., which lies just about opposite the city of Burlington, Vermont (on the eastern border of New York) when viewing a map of Lake Champlain. These areas are easily commuted via several ferries that run back & forth between them. Many people travel to the Burlington waterfront area via foot passenger, bike or auto in the summer on THE PORT KENT - BURLINGTON. The quaint & quick CHARLOTTE - ESSEX will ferry you safely to the SHELBURNE MUSEUM (a wonderful family day trip for young & old is only about 1/2 hour from the cottage), THE VERMONT TEDDY BEAR FACTORY or a host of other wonderful destination spots in the Green Mountain State of VERMONT. On a clear day, you may travel westward for adventures into the great HIGH PEAKS REGION of the ADIRONDACK PARK; OR, just stay put in the village area & enjoy all that the LAKE CHAMPLAIN area has to offer in terms of its inherent natural coastal beauty, which includes a peaceful; but well equipped village that has the sixth largest lake in the U.S., a scenic bay, a large pond and a clean river -- all within a few miles of one another.
The Boquet River, gently winds out to Lake Champlain at Noblewood Beach. There is a great spot to drop in a kayak or canoe (from just below the waterfalls), a few blocks downstream of the cottage.
Just a short walk down the street from the cottage (just before the falls), Willsboro hosts the world class, yet unpretentious TURTLE ISLAND CAFÉ . Be prepared to be dazzled with locally harvested, sustainable cuisine, offered up by the talented chef ~ owner, David Martin. The ambiance, as well as the cuisine will keep you coming back for more!
If you are ready for some day trips (close to the area), then you may consider FORT TICONDEROGA, THE ADIRONDACK MUSEUM, THE AU SABLE FALL CHASM -- just to name a few, that all have something totally different to offer.
For the hikers, the HIGH PEAKS are just waiting for your next great adventure! One of the most well known is WHITE FACE , located in Wilmington NY - just about 45 minutes from the cottage.
Beyond the beautiful river view that can be enjoyed from most rooms in the house, the whimsical décor of the home, using top rate furnishings & fabrics would have to be one of the highlights of the cottage interior. You start to get a sense of it from the photos; but once you are there, you will note that the attention to detail put into the design of this home is amazing.
Talk about a “home away from home” - Beau Overlook has taken that idea to a whole new level.
The plush, first floor has a master bedroom suite with full bath + washer & dryer - directly adjacent to room. The ultra modern, fully equipped kitchen has a range with an induction cook top that brings water to boil in 60 seconds. In addition, there is convection / microwave oven over top of the range. Most spices, cooking oils etc. are stocked in the home & ready to use. A quick stop at the market to pick up your immediate supplies & you are ready to go.
The wireless internet is ready for all that need to stay on track with work while on their holiday; & the cable T.V. will provide a good variety of local television stations; + there is a DVD player, so that you can catch up on some of the latest movies out -- when you are ready to wind down for the day. The house is equipped with a whole house fan & there are also air conditioner / dehumidifiers that can be used when needed to provide comfort on the really muggy days.
The 2nd floor has 2 additional bedrooms with vaulted ceilings & paddle fans. The front bedroom with 2 twin size captain beds has been colorfully decorated with children in mind; & the back bedroom, with a river view & sumptuous queen size bed has a delightful aviary theme. The bath with a beautifully tiled & glassed shower is just a few steps away from both 2nd floor bedrooms.
ONE STAY AT 'BEAU OVERLOOK' COTTAGE & YOU TOO WILL COME TO UNDERSTAND ALL THAT IT HAS TO OFFER THE DISCERNING VACATIONER!
ABOUT THE AREA:
The small village of Willsboro is part of the Adirondack Park. THE SQUARE FOOTAGE OF THE ADIRONDACK PARK ENCOMPASSES AN AREA LARGER THAN THE STATE OF VERMONT.
Having the envious position of being at the most eastern point of the park, this town is also bordered by LAKE CHAMPLAIN ~ which is the body of water that separates NEW YORK and VERMONT. Therefore, this community has the benefits of being both a mountain & a water community with four bodies of water, all within a few miles of one another. There is the Boquet River - the steepest river from its point of origin in the state of New York - which empties in Lake Champlain at Noblewood Park (this sandy delta is the nesting spot for many birds (including GREAT BLUE HERON); The Long Pond, which is a large body of pristine still water, just three miles up Rte. 22; The Willsboro Bay which is formed by the peninsula of land, which creates a barrier from Lake Champlain called, 'The Point'. This bay is harbor for many large sail boats & cruisers that come from far & wide to make this a bustling boat wharf their home during the summer months; and LAKE CHAMPLAIN, the sixth largest lake in the U.S.; which is home to many of the best sport fisherman, as well, as sail boat regattas; & a host of other water related activities. It is enhanced by the beautiful views that can be enjoyed from the shores of either side, where you can take in not just the pristine shorelines themselves; but the mountaintops that are not far off in the distance. That being said, this is truly a photographers paradise!
Willsboro is just off of Exit 32 or 33 of the I-87 (THE NORTHWAY) -- a scenic highway that stretches from Albany and on up into Canada. Montreal is about one & a half hours north of this town. Being situated just about opposite of the city of Burlington Vermont on Lake Champlain and about 30 minutes south of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Willsboro is still able to keep its small town charm, while being just a short distance to some of the more urban areas for anyone that wants to take in the sites and activities of the larger cities. Most of the locals will jump on the CHARLOTTE - ESSEX FERRY to make a quick dash into Vermont to get to wherever their destination of the day is in the Green Mountain state. This ferry runs by the 1/2 hour in summer time and by the hour in the winter. The northern most ferry crossing, just north of Plattsburgh at Cumberland Head runs 24/7 all year long.
About 16 miles north of Willsboro, The PORT KENT - BURLINGTON FERRY operates during the summer months; and can pick up foot passengers, and cyclists, as well as cars and will take them all directly into port at the city of Burlington. This is a scenic one hour trip that will let you enjoy the ECHO LAKE AQUARIUM and many other fun activities in the waterfront area of Burlington, without ever having to worry about parking, or driving in the city.
The Amtrak train does go through the town of Willsboro daily. The closest train stations are in Westport or Port Kent - both are about 15 minutes from Willsboro.
If you jump in your car and drive due west about 45 minutes, you will come to the 1980 OLYMPIC VENUE AREA that encompasses the towns of Wilmington, N.Y. (home of White Face Mountain - down hill skiing & mountain climbing) Mt. Hoevenberg (cross country, bob sled & luge park) and Lake Placid. This area still thrives on its Olympic heritage and the ice arena still hosts many important competitions & ice shows for the public to attend. The tower where the high jumpers take off from, still runs & athletes train there throughout the summer months.
This area is also well known to be one to the top fishing spots in the U.S. The Atlantic Salmon, Bass, and Trout are just a few of the favorites that the locals recount their 'fish stories' about. Every year there is a major BASS FISHING TOURNAMENT ON FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND, which bring out the best from far & wide to cast their chance to be this year's winner. With Lake Champlain and the Boquet river coming together in Willsboro, the Atlantic Salmon swim upstream in the spring and then again in the fall. The fish ladder is Willsboro was built to enable them to get up the falls, so that they are able to get upstream to lay their eggs. The pristine waterways of this community are the jewels that attract boaters, fisherman, and nature enthusiasts from far & wide.
With this short essay, you may start to get an idea about why I always say: 'THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO; OR NOTHING AT ALL
Our insurance policy is restrictive to what breeds of dogs are allowed on our property. We endeavor to allow well trained pets to accompany their owners whenever possible. THE THING THAT YOU SHOULD DO: at least once while you are here, (if you are of average fitness or better) is HIKE TO THE TOP OF RATTLESNAKE MOUNTAIN! The trail access for this 'local natural wonder' is just a tad more than 3 miles up Rte. 22 N -- opposite the sign for Long Pond Cabins. Gather your gear & a good set of hiking shoes and set out for an adventure to remember. This past fall, my husband & I ventured out with our pack and made it to the top in 45 minutes. What a site to behold from the top -- the Willsboro Bay & the Point in the foreground with Lake Champlain (dotted with the Four Brother Islands), set-off by the Vermont Green Mt. to the eastern horizon AND from the other side, a great view of Long Pond, snaking towards the High Peaks for a beautiful, late afternoon westerly view!!! You should take a half a day, pack a meal -- PLEASE DON'T forget your camera. Once you get to the top, you will be greeted by an area where quite a few natural artists have done their various stone stacking interpretations. Some are quite creative & intricate -- you may want to make your own contribution to this obviously INSPIRATIONAL VIEW!
Aside from the fact that Willsboro has such an abundance of fresh water access -- you can hardly beat the thrill of the view from the top of RATTLESNAKE MOUNTAIN!
Let me know what you think of it after you make your ascension -- I am still trying to plot my 'full moon night time view' in the future :-)
Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: As you can see from my photo....we are definitely animal lovers - or should I say - they definitely love us! I love poking fun at myself & the world around me; as I know that we only go around once. So 'CARPE DIEM' - animals live in the moment, and those are some of the best lessons that I learn from them every day.
Why the Owner Chose Willsboro:
Our son & him family live just on the other side of the pond (Lake Champlain). They have a farm in Vermont, near Mt. Mansfield. Four years ago, they had a set of twins and that was it for me.....I was not going to be kept down in the flatlands any longer! We have traveled this area upside down & inside out for more than 30 years; and now it was out turn to enjoy the North Country whenever it suited us. Being closer to the grandchildren was paramount to my happiness. The Willsboro area puts me in unique position to be able to commute back & forth from the mid-Atlantic area in a reasonable amount of time, yet I still feel tucked away in this friendly little village. It gives me the best of both worlds. Close enough to get away from the fast lane easily enough; yet a world away (which is the way that I like it)!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Willsboro is small; but offers so much natural beauty, that I can hardly put a proper description of it into words. This town has great LOGISTICS to so many other areas (Burlington, Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, Charlotte etc.) -- which makes it easy to get to most places that I would want to go, easily. The village itself provides a wide diversity of beautiful scenery & outdoor activities to enjoy. Having been a 'city girl', this village offers me a 'laid back' pace with no traffic lights :-) -- while still being close enough that it only take a minute to get to the post office; or go pick up a gallon of milk at the local grocer. PLEASE READ: OTHER ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES blurb (just above the OWNERS INFO. SECTION) . In fact, I still have trouble fitting everything in that I want to see & do before the sun sets, each day that I am lucky enough to be there --- but then when night does fall, and the stars & moonlight start dancing on the river below -- watch out -- because that is one great view! On any given day, all I need do is grab my hiking stick and set out for a riverside hike along the lovely Boquet, which winds out to the mouth of Lake Champlain, two miles downstream; or jump in my car and take a 'Sunday afternoon drive' around this picturesque water community. I always come back to the cottage feeling refreshed & satisfied, that I have taken in some of MOTHER NATURE'S FINEST! Having traveled extensively and been a commercial photographer for more than 30 years....this area just does it for me! Give it a chance and it may well suit your taste buds for natural beauty also!
