I stayed in the Thimonia for four months in the winter, from January through April. I had a truly memorable, restful, and transformative time there, where I was witness to the thoughtful amenities of the house, unspeakable beauty of the island, and touching generosity of the locals. It’s impossible to fully convey the incredible sense of peace and contentment I felt on the island, and in the house, but I’ll try. Like Sunil (below), I too was a bit apprehensive about the prospect of winter on a Greek island. Now that I’ve been, I know that my time in Sifnos was truly a gift. I came to the Thimonia to finish a draft of my novel, and I couldn’t have conceived of a more ideal place to work on it. Looking through the French doors of the bedroom, I could see the blue, blue Aegean in the distance, like a mirror to the sky, the horizon line between the two at times barely perceptible. Some nights, while riding my rented scooter along the winding, nearly empty mountain roads, I would look up to discover a giant, dark red moon. The house itself has everything you’d likely need, and more. A few of the more notable features include an outdoor shower, olive grove, and a beautiful, locally-made furniture and dishes. One of my favorite things to do was to wake up in the morning and do yoga, stretching out to the incredible, sunlit backdrop. Afterward I would work for a few hours, then make myself lunch of freshly baked bread, locally grown vegetables, and Greek cheese and sardines, and sit outside, contemplating the gorgeous view. The island itself is great for hiking and long walks, with goats, sheep, donkeys, lizards, and horses seemingly around every corner. The beaches are scenic and peaceful. The local food is excellent and healthy: revithia (my favorite, a delicious chickpea soup from Sifnos), fresh seafood, halloumi. “Beware of Greeks baring gifts,” the ancient saying goes, but it couldn’t be more untrue when it comes to Sifnians: the locals, almost without exception, were friendly, inviting, and deeply generous. Even strangers: I recall one shopkeeper who liked to give me a free 20oz bottle of water every time I came in, as a “gift from the boss.” Evdokia, the Thimonia’s caretaker, was particularly, exceptionally, kind and helpful—whenever we had a question or issue, she solved it quickly and capably. I could go on and on... there's just so much to recommend. I couldn’t be more grateful to Elaine for sharing her home with me. It's basically paradise.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We stayed at The Thimonia during Oct/ Nov when the summer crowds had gone and the island was preparing for winter. A perfect time for exploring this marvel which is Sifnos. He came to study traditional architecture and the built environment; she in search of traditional pottery; and both to explore the natural beauty and living tradition of the Sifnian people. Neither was disappointed. He says: The Thimonia is superbly located on the eastern edge of Exambela with views to the north-east over the marvellous flow of habitations of Apollonia and contiguous Artemonas, so artfully scattered across their hillsides, and to the east over the stone terraces stretching to ancient Kastro and the Aegean beyond – sunrise and moonrise unimpeded - and all this only 15 minutes walk to supermarkets! This splendid house is totally in keeping with the vernacular architecture of the island. Its generous flagged terraces (and out-door hot shower with view to the Agean) lead into the olive grove which frames the exquisitely simple, classic, all white orthodox church only 200 metres from the front door - a constant inspiring three dimensional icon. The interior of the house is of traditional construction so simple and uncluttered providing calm and repose together with all the “necessities” of life . She says: Elaine’s website and other tenants describe perfectly this wonderful cottage, but it is not just another holiday rental. It is Elaine’s treasured retreat, fully equipped waiting for her return. There is an abundance of everything: wonderful books, a full size stove, multiple pots, pans, utensils, bowls waiting for delicious local produce to be turned into a feast to eat on the terrace at twilight. There is a lovely feeling of space and light. French doors allow breezes to cool or the sun to warm: no need for air-conditioning or heating. A favourite daily event was the hot outside shower,(ears open for arrival of Ioannis, the gardener) or in the evenings relieving aching limbs while watching the lights of Kastro or a passing ship. The joy of isolation at the edge of the village. The days pass gently. Perhaps a swim, visit to a pottery, delicious lunch at an inexpensive beach taverna, photography, more walking. Sifnos has many treasures to be revealed. People are welcoming, generous and forgiving of our lack of language. A phone call to Elaine’s delightful manager, Evdokia - already met on arrival at the ferry - will fix any problem and happily provide useful advice.

I am a writer from New York in the process of finishing my first novel. I stayed in the Thimonia January through April of 2012. Before leaving I was a little apprehensive (Winter??? A small Greek island???), now I look back on it as one of the most enjoyable four month periods of my life. As other reviews mention, the house and grounds are beautiful, (as is the island, with breathtaking views of the sea around every corner). Whether by design or divine luck, every detail seems arranged just right for maximum inspiration and rejuvenating rest. The french doors in the bedroom which open onto sunrise over the Aegean; the granite table on the stone patio where you sip your morning coffee; even the cup you sip from, which is made by local potters from the island clay; a glass of wine under a star-filled sky; the olive groves; the comfy couches; the fireplace; the walking paths which wind all over the island climbing through terraced fields, passing small chapels and cottages—it is all lovely. I would go back in a heart-beat. (Winter!!! A small Greek island!!!) Sifnos must be one of the most charming of the Greek islands, and the Thimonia, simply perfect—inspiring, peaceful, and never ostentatious. Elaine has truly created a home away from home. And that is the best part of all—after even a week here, you, too, will be calling it home.

Owner response: Sunil was a wonderful tenant and I thank him for such a sensitive glowing review. BUT... in his enthusiasm he listed who the cottage is suitable for incorrectly. It is NOT sutiable for families, small children, pets, the elderely who have difficulity with stairs, teen-aged girls--or boys, 'party-people': smokers and/or boozers. It IS suitable for no more than one or two artist, writers, academics, photographers; i.e. quite creative people in general. It can accomodate a tenant's one very short--term guest. I have a year-round, mostly invisible except when needed, staff of three: a manager/cartaker, a gardener and a cleaning lady who keep things running smothly.

Staying at this cottage for almost two months was what I wanted. It is perfect for anyone who needs privacy, peace, a heavenly view, and a small functionable and well-maintained house. All you need is at a close distance -bus stop, grocery, though the garden will provide you with some fruits and vegetables. The information and the photos on the site give an accurace picture of the location and the owner has been very helpful answering questions. The town is near by, a wonderful fifteen minutes walk, whenever you need to eat out or have a drink. The gardener and the lady taking care of the house are wonderful and polite. I certainly want to return one day.

This was my second extended stay at this beautiful property. My first time was for 3 months. This time I was fortunate enough to spend 5 months, April-August. As my previous post describes, this property is simply perfect in every way. The stunning views, privacy, and overall property itself is simply ideal. If the island beaches, hiking, nightlife or quant villages are not your thing, everything is here at the property. A full vegetable garden to toil in, picking fresh green figs, apricots and pomegranates from trees located directly on the property, a fresh herb garden, outdoor private shower with direct views of the sea, and lastly, strolling through the private olive trees on the property. For singles, or couples this is the place you read about in magazines and travel books........

We first stayed at Elaine's cottage several years ago, giving ourselves the retirement gift of a long sojourn on a Greek island--one of our cherished dreams. We fumbled around on the Internet, which as we all know usually promises much more than it delivers, and found VRBO listing 55773. Since we lived in the DC area at the time, at Elaine's suggestion we took the bus up to New York City and had a wonderful lunch with her and her very dear son Peter. We all approved of each other and sealed the deal. Some months later, as we rolled our luggage down what Elaine's photo web site describes as "the unimpressive entrance to Exambela Village," our trepidation mounted. What had we done? What we had done was get very very lucky. When we went through the big green gate, we were stunned that this was where we had been led and that this was where we would be living for the next month. It's not often in life that you get better than you expected. I won't repeat all the other reviewers' litany of the charms of the cottage and the island (all true). Suffice it to say that two years later, when we were feeling very down in the midst of a relocation, and in need of a sense of home again, we booked another month's stay in Kayto's house. It is such a beautiful, unique place (and such a deal!). In our hearts, it will always be our Greek home--one of our most beloved former homes, where life was just about as good as it can be. Euxaristoume, Eleni.

Last summer I decided to rent some houses in Greece on the Ciclades Islands. I booked four accomodations by internet hoping that they would agree with the pictures and the description I got from the owners. Three of them were a disaster: dust and dirtiness everywhere, careless furniture with broken chairs and no view to the sea. When I came to Sifnos I was very sceptic and it was a real surprise to verify that the house I rented was much more amazing than the sensation I got from the pictures. Everything was perfect and tastefully. I felt like at home and I enjoyed very much the beautiful garden and the amazing view to the sea. The house has a peculiar charm that houses to rent usually don't have. I appreciated also the enchanting situation of the cottage . Cars cannot go along a narrow path which leds to the house and I felt every day of my 2 months stay a pleasant sensation of peace. It is difficult to explain with few words the amazing atmosphere of the place.

My wife and I stayed here at the end of the 2010 season and could not have wished for a better place to ease away the tensions of a life lived at an all-too-hectic pace. We absolutely doted on Kayto, the live-in cat, who is so affectionate that he started to bring "gifts" to us! The gardens have an idyllic lookout over the eastern seas of the Cyclades and the light was different at each moment of our day, affording us the opportunity to see the view in so many delightful ways. The village stores at Exembla, the town of Appollonia with its museum and fascinating history, and the many many walks available to us gave us the chance we needed for much rest and relaxation. The delightful churches, one for each day of the year, the ancient walls and towers, the unspoiled hillsides, the acropoli, the beaches, cafes and restaurants - they all combined to make our stay even more pleasant than we had originally hoped. My wife took the opportunity to prepare some colored pencil art and studied the insects of the island, while I took great delight in photographing at every turn of the walks among the roads and harbors. We were enabled to read, cook for ourselves when we wanted and eat healthy foods when we went out for a meal, rise and sleep at an hour that suited our varying needs (nap-time is SO necessary and welcome!), stroll the lanes and by-ways and still have connectivity when we absolutely had to have it. This was a perfect get-away for us although, being late-season, the ferry service was perhaps a little sketchy yet still available and fast. The stone Thimonia had been restored and so were we - our restoration has been wonderful for us both, individually and together. If you want to relax in restorative surroundings, take as much time as you can here - you will not regret a single day!

The house and island exceeded expectations. It's prettier than the photos, which cannot really capture the atmosphere of the place. A beautiful stone walkway takes you to a private gate and upon entering a gasp as you realize that you've entered a very charming realm. The house is perched on the side of a hill overlooking terraced fields and the sea. Steps lead down to the stone terrace, olive groves and herb garden (you've already passed the tomato garden). The house itself is lovingly decorated and very comfortable. I especially loved the traditonal stone floors, and whitewashed plaster walls. It even has a good collection of books. We ate at the stone table overlooking the sea almost every evening, and especially enjoyed the outdoor shower with the panoramic view - so refreshing! It is indeed very convenient to walk to the local store in the village, and not much farther to take in the interesting shops and sites of the larger town of Apollonia, which is a delight in itself. The bus stop is a short (5 minute) walk away, and will get you transportation to a couple of beaches, by a 10 minute scenic drive through mountainous terrain with views of ancient terraced fields and the deep blue sea beyond.

I really don't know where to begin except to say that everything is more beautiful than we ever could have imagined...if that is possible The design and decor of Thimonia, the beautiful gardens and must be truly an artist extrordinaire. We are also enjoying your music library...seems to complement the environment. Edvokia and her mother Voula are very charming friendly and helpful...we may have Easter dinner at their hotel tomorrow. Kayto came around last night while I was watering the geraniums with my bath water...I tried to coax him to come in but just as I gained his confidence, 2 o3 firecrackers went off in the distance ( Easter celebrations ) and he ran off...we noticed on one of our BR runs during the night that he was in his basket...this morning he was gone again. After having coffee with Edvokia this morning and getting the internet connection going we walked to Apollonia enjoying the poeple, finding the Bakery and grocery. Had lunch on the patio and kept pinching ourselves to be sure that the view was not a dream. In the afternoon we walked across the valley to Kastro then back along a hiking trail towards Faros connecting to the main road bringing us back to Exambela. An outdoor shower followed by a glass of wine while listening to Pavarotti and reading a nice book has filled in time while waiting to have dinner. We could not be more pleased with this little piece of heaven.

                          Owner info

                          Year Purchased: 1999

About the owner: I'm an artist and a writer and a native born New Yorker, USA. My family is not Greek (background is English & Irish), but we love the country, the islands, and especially the people. My husband died in '94 and I had to finish the house and property myself with a local architect, builders, carpenters, landscape gardeners, etc. AND, being dyslexic, I can hardly say a word in Greek. This listing site say 'Year Purchased' but it should read 'Year Finished'. I have a talented son who's a writer and my daughter-in-law is a playwright. She has inherited--along with her sister--a house of their own in another village. I don't get to Sifnos very often these days, since I've gotten old and creaky, that's why I have 'The Thimonia' listed for rent on VRBO. My 'stuff' is still there--that's why the house is cozy. I feel it's not good for a beloved home to be empty.

                          Why the Owner Chose Exambela:
My family and I came to Sifnos for the first time in 1982. Over the next 10 years we came back-on and off- for summer vacations, renting houses in different villages. We liked Exambela village best because it's just residential (only a mini-market) and there is a small community of ex-pats. We finally bought land there in 1992, but it took us until 1999 to completely rebuild the Thimonia: originally a goat barn, adding stone terraces, landscaping the grounds, and adding the gardens and olive groves.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The property has a great view of the Aegean Sea looking East, and of the mountains behind to the West. It's just on the northern edge of the main village of Exambela, which has no roads for cars: just donkey paths or mini bikes. It's very private and quiet--but five minutes walk to the village's mini-market and the bus stop.
