RENTERS BEWARE!!!

Date of Stay: 11/12/11 Review Submitted: 02/06/12

RENTERS BEWARE!!! My friend and I, through VRBO, rented this Bella Lago unit for an 8-day stay from Saturday November 12th, 2011 and left early AM Sunday November 20th while we played in a baseball tournament (Roy Hobbs World Series). The entire transaction took place via emails & phone calls. We never had direct face to face contact with the owner, but he seemed reasonable and straightforward. We had a normal experience staying at this nice Bella Lago condo. The unit was clean and it had all the amenities noted in the listing. It had limited cable stations so we had to go out more than expected to see sporting events, but that was a minor inconvenience. Access to a garage and the associated door opener was a bonus we did not expect. It was a great location near the beach and we were able to visit the World Championship Sand Sculpting tournament within walking distance. Originally we had planned on rating the condo 4 ½ stars. With all that said however, if you plan on renting from this owner, beware. The day before we left, we received a phone call from the cleaning person asking when we would be leaving as she wanted to get into clean it on Sunday. We told her we had early flights on Sunday November 20 and would be out by 7:00 AM. Then, 3 weeks later we received an email from the owner on December 10th, stating that the cleaning lady accused us of causing burn damage to a counter and that he was keeping our deposit. Why didn’t we hear from the owner the day the cleaning lady cleaned the unit? I think you can figure out what really happened. For the record, we are not 2 young thugs (we are 60+), we don’t drink, and we did not use the range even once during our stay.

Owner response:I am the owner at the Bella Lago unit in question. I was the last person in that unit before this gentleman rented from me and the countertop was unblemished at the time that I left. After this renter left the unit the cleaning lady contacted me and informed me that it looked as if a hot pan was set unprotected on the countertop and left a deep, scorched, circular mark that could not be removed using the usual cleaning techniques. It took me approx 2 weeks before I could get to the unit to look at the countertop for myself. At that point I contacted someone to repair it and it ended up costing me $350 to do so. The security deposit I require is $300 so at that point I was already out $50. At this point I contacted the renter to make him aware of the situation and that I would not be refunding the security deposit to him. After several emails back and forth and with him disputing leaving the marks on the countertop, I decided to give back $150 out of the goodness of my heart. I know for a fact that I was the last one in the unit prior to their arrival. I know for a fact that the mark was NOT there at the time of my departure. I know for a fact that it WAS there at the time of their departure. How it got there is unknown but I do have my renters sign a contract in which it states that the security deposit (or a portion thereof) will be kept if any items require extra cleaning or fixing which was the case here. I felt bad for them because I knew that they probably expected to get the deposit back. I sent back the $150 and then they demanded the other $150 back or they would write a bad review. This is what really happened. The unit is beautiful and this was an unfortunate situation, one that had never happened to me before and I hope will never happen again.
