The Fountain View House is located in the heart of Provence, in a “perched” or hilltop village, Menerbes. This village, which Peter Mayle wrote about in “A Year in Provence,” is an exceptionally authentic village in the heart of the Luberon with its hills, vineyards, fruit trees and lavender fields.
The Fountain View House layout permits a couple, small family or group to enjoy renting a house in the heart of one of Provence’s most beautiful villages without having to take on a large three to five bedroom farm house which is so common in the area. Many families or two couples traveling together, however, choose to take the entire joined house so they can enjoy the heart of the village life.
The Fountain View House is composed of two stories, ancient Provencal stone. Parts of the house date back at least 500 years and probably much longer (one of the village’s ancient bee-hived shape ovens is incorporated in the building, though not available for visits).
The Fountain View House is situated opposite the village Winter Church and offers views of its ancient façade as well as a southern view over the vineyards and hills to the Luberon massif.
On the ground floor guests will find the warm welcome of a living/dining room with stone walls, beamed ceilings, and a beautiful fireplace. A separate modern kitchen provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy Provencal fruits and vegetables while looking out out onto a typical Provencal fountain and the hills beyond. The kitchen includes modern oven, stovetop, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.
On the second floor, there’s a large bedroom with windows onto the southern Hills, along with a small second bedroom/office. There’s a lovely bathroom with bathtub, heated towel rack, etc. to provide all the creature comforts you need to enjoy your stay in a typical French village.
The bedroom features a king-size bed with a separate daybed for relaxing. The living room furnishings include a lit-gigogne, the French answer to the problems of sleeper sofas. The lit-gigogne turns into a single bed with another single bed underneath that can be pulled out in trundle fashion and then raised to bed height.
Menerbes is a storied village, famous for its beautiful stone architecture long before Peter Mayle wrote “A Year in Provence”. Picasso lived in Menerbes for a period after World War II and bought a large house for his lover Dora Marr that is now being turned into a museum. This village had become a hotbed of Protestantism in the 17th century and withstood a siege for seven years until treachery opened the gates to Louis XIV’s troops.
The village has two bakeries, a butcher, pharmacy, a grocery, two cafes, and from two to five restaurants depending on the season. This commercial life allows you to enjoy the rhythm and delights of French village life.
The central location of Menerbes allows easy exploration of Provence by car, bicycle, foot or even horseback. Aix-en-Provence is less than an hour away, as is Marseilles airport. Avignon, the Palace of the Popes, and the TGV station are less than 40 minutes away. St. Remy-de-Provence about 30 minutes away, while Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the center of antique wheeling and dealing is only fifteen minutes away.
Television, hair dryer, iron and utilities are included. All linens are provided along with weekly cleaning service.
A welcome pack of groceries can be arranged in advance (highly suggested given the variable opening times of French groceries) so that you can enjoy your trip to Provence from the very start.
A village in France is for relaxing, savoring the culture and the food, and peace and quiet. The Fountain View House will give you the warm welcome to start your exploration of Provence.
The Fountain View House adjoins the High View House via a stairway and the two houses can be rented together for a larger group or for two couples who want to share a memorable trip to Provence.

We enjoyed our stay in Menerbes at the Fountain View House very much. It was a pleasure to spend a week there and feel attached to the village. Everyone was very welcoming, and after visiting many of the villages in the area, we concluded that Menerbes was just about perfect. We also had the good fortune to have a week of perfect weather. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to experience Menerbes. Al & Betsy G. Asheville, NC USA

An Amazing Holiday in Provence!

We have just returned from an amazing holiday in Provence! Just a short note to let you know that we had a most enjoyable stay in Menerbes and were rather sorry to leave after just one week! The village folk were so friendly and accommodating – our last evening's meal to celebrate a family birthday was one of the best meals we have ever had. The early morning visit to the butchery and the daily croissant orders made the reality of small town living a real prospect to consider. The amount of steps to climb is a winner to staying slim, trim, and young! We watched A Good Year again last evening just to have another look at one amazing part of the world. We took thousands of photographs so will be re-living our holiday for years to come. Regards, Sandi K. South Africa

We had a wonderfully-relaxing week at the Fountain View House in Menerbes. It was cold for few days, so we just stayed in the warmth and comfort of the house. We enjoyed our drives and walks to most of the "villages perches" in the area even though most places were closed, and there were just a few people on the streets. Thanks again and a la prochaine fois – perhaps in New Orleans this time. Linda and Frank M. California

We had a perfectly marvelous time in the Luberon biking and hiking around the valley towns. It was so special – as was our little love nest from which we'd wander forth from every day. We found that there is an ATM in Bonnieux at the Post Office. That location is much better than going to Coustellet, so you might want to update you guide books. Le Golubet restaurant in Menerbes had really nice folks, reasonable prices, and good food. The restaurant next door is way over-priced. The chef is a snob, but he's good. In Bonnieux, the view from Les Terraces restaurant is superb and the food is good, but the waiters are Parisian – cold and aloof. Le Terrail was our favorite. It has excellent food, wonderful energy, and the treatment by the staff was great. It also had a nice view, and was a good value. Robert H. Hawaii USA

Thank you again for arranging access to Menerbes' Fountain View House when we had forgotten the keys! Costas was very charming and helpful. The house itself was wonderfully cool and very French. We enjoyed our stay. If we return to Menerbes, we hope to get in touch with you again. Cheers, John M. UK

We had a delightful stay in Menerbes and enjoyed your house immensely. It was a perfect spot for our coming and going, and allowed us to enjoy the life of the village a little more intimately. Thank you for making the logistics easy to manage. Hopefully we will have another opportunity to visit. Sincerely, Mimi & Larry C. Eagee, ID USA
