THE EXPERIENCE BEGINS...as one passes under the Baltimore/Annapolis bike path, past the horse farm where the Welsh ponies romp, through the woods from where the deer intently watch, then down the hill to your home for the week. Entering through the wrought iron gate onto a winding stone path through the gardens, one strolls onto the back deck or gazebo for an unequaled view of the river. The massive exotic wood door provides entrance to a home you’ll be telling your friends about for years. Extensively remodeled, the kitchen with the rough-hewn brick walls and floor to ceiling windows will be activity central.
Enjoy a very private time on a point of land jutting into Chase Creek off the Severn River, but just 5 minutes from downtown Annapolis. Whether you want to run, or ride a bike, explore the river, spend time reading or writing, or just relax, Briarcliff Retreat will suit your needs.
INDOORS Every room in the home has a view of the water, often with windows on 3 sides allowing beautiful light to stream in throughout the day. The large glass windows and sliding door face south; you'll find you want to keep them open throughout the warm months as the breeze off the river often flows right through the home.
Two comfortable sofas surround the wood-burning fireplace. A large steel trough keeps wood and kindling at hand. A perfect place to read and reflect is in the window seat filled with pillows. Off the living area is a writer's dream - a cozy office surrounded by windows with hydrangeas at the sill, the gazebo just beyond and water in the distance.
OUTDOORS The grounds abound with native foliage and luscious landscaping changing with the seasons—and illuminated at night for those evening private strolls. Take in the terraced hillside as you walk from the upper deck, to the mid-deck where a large double hammock awaits you to the lower deck and private dock.
The house sits approximately 50' above water, which provides spectacular views. By the house, there are little nooks throughout for taking time for yourself or with those closest to you; a porch swing and love-seat just outside the living room, a gazebo with a quiet bench overlooking the terraced gardens and water, a huge iron cast fire-pit surrounded by stools and log seating, two Adirondack chairs on the upper deck to lounge in while sipping your cocktail, a grilling area off the kitchen with a Weber grill, and a dining table overlooking the view where you can enjoy your wonderful meal.
And for those staying in the Master Bedroom, a private balcony and stunning sunrises await you.
In short, every guest could easily find their own secluded retreat...
For the gourmand, or not, this is a kitchen you will not want to leave and which will, no doubt, become activity central. Original 1920s rough hewn bricks cover 3 of 4 walls; when lit they become a work of art. The 11' long bar-top is a beautiful solid piece of African wood called Bubinga. The entire kitchen aside from the brick is new, including top of the line appliances. As you stand at the sink, you might turn and look out the floor to ceiling windows, feeling as if on the edge of a precipice, looking down a steep hill to Chase Creek. Just on the other side is a glassed in bay with a view of the garden. There a sliding door leads you directly from kitchen to outdoor grill.
Dine indoors at the dining table, at the stunning wood bar-top or at the outdoor table overlooking the creek and Severn River beyond surrounded by dozens of twinkling outdoor garden lights.

About: Welcome to the home of Julie and Glenn — a former professional ballet dancer who has closed the curtain and a Navy fighter pilot who has parked his jets. These days you’ll find us aboard the good Schooner Mistress, either in the Caribbean, the Pacific, or the Mediterranean (depending on when you’re reading this).
Perhaps we are living the life of which you’ve always dreamt—so now you don’t have to! Vicarious living is best…all the memories and none of the expense, hardship, and long cold nights on watch hundreds of miles from any land. But the more the house is rented, the longer we can stay away, and the more the house will remain available for your future excursions and vacations to Annapolis.
While you’re here at Briarcliff, please follow us on our travels over the seas - www.schoonermistress.net. Feel free to pass along a note via the site and let us know how you liked our home. You are the ones that are making this trip possible for us--our many and heartfelt thanks.
