Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: I'm the youngest of four. My two brothers, sister and I were all born in Portola and we grew up in the Buzzard's House long before it became a vacation rental. We spent our summers building tree forts in the nearby woods, playing in the river, catching fish and crawdads, crossing the river to explore the train tracks and wait for the giant trains to go by so we could get them to honk at us. We also spent countless days camping in the nearby mountains, especially the beautiful Lakes Basin Area. I currently live in Butterfly Valley, outside of Quincy, CA, (45 minute drive from the vacation rentals) with my husband of almost 37 years, Paul. We have a son, LaRell, living in Oregon, and a daughter, Kelsha, and two granddaughters, Jettie and Laylie, who also live in Quincy.
Why the Owner Chose Portola: In 2009, after both of my parents died, my husband and I bought out my siblings and kept my mom's original Buzzard's Roost (the apartment) going, with the intention of adding the cabin and the house. Even though we have our own lovely home near Quincy, I couldn't imagine not owning the home that my parents loved for nearly 60 years. When my parents were first married, and very young, they were hired to dismantle Walker Mine (North of Lake Davis). Dad used the salvaged lumber to build the first part of what is now the Buzzard's House. The rest is history, and there's a lot of it! Great place to grow up!
The Unique Benefits at this House: Very few homes in the Portola area sit right down by the river the way this one does. So relaxing and private, yet close to town and the convenience of Highway 70 if you need to go somewhere.
