Owner lives quietly in sound-insulated in-law unit below with two separate entrances. You have complete privacy but immediate access for help when needed.
And the owner, a social scientist, knows that what keeps far-flung families connectedis reunions, the events that mark the landmarks in family-members' lives (marriages, graduations, victories and loses) or just happen because it's high time, so why not now? He loves to play the invisible host to your gatherings with their noise, children's footfalls, socializing, parties and ruckus comings and goings. It's a great house for these.

About the owner: Jeremy Sherman, Ph.D., M.P.P. I'm an easy-going social scientist, professor and author, and former non-profit manager and environmental lobbyist. I've taught psychology, sociology, history, English, rhetoric, Advertising and Business Strategy. Currently teaching in an MBA program at California College of the Arts. For 18 years I've been a collaborator on a major origins of life research project with U.C. Berkeley Biological Anthropologist/Neuroscientist, Terrence Deacon. I have written four books and 500 Psychology Today articles. I'm father of three grown children (none at home), partnered, and a jazz bassist/singer performing 3x a week in Berkeley restaurants.
Why the Owner Chose Berkeley: Like many I bought this large home when my kids were pre-teens, not foreseeing that they'd fly the coop. I rattled around in its largeness for years, then rented the in-law unit to very satisfied long-term renters.
Recently I realized I could expand the downstairs a little, move into it and rent the top two floors of this house. I just poured $300k into the expansion and renovation which was expertly done.
The house was built in 1924 as part of a development. To save money on planning they would flip blueprints and make a mirror image house, my neighbor's two doors down. Having been in the walls, I can say the work was excellent for the time. An enviable layout and design.
The Unique Benefits at this House: After my divorce in 1996, I moved into a converted two room garage and just adored it. To ease the transition for our three children, my ex (now a good friend) and I agreed to keep our large home and take turns staying in it. About a year into the arrangement it suddenly dawned on me to buy my own home. 1830 Sonoma was the first and really only place I visited--love at first sight.
It was the big tree in the front that sold me, the quiet tree lined street, Berkeley's most beautiful library a half-block down, my favorite commercial district three blocks away.
In 1997, the house was in terrible shape, lived in since the 40's by a woman who refused any help with it in the decades before she died at 90. I did a huge remodel then, and though I've lived and travelled broadly (years in Guatemala, Tennessee, Boston, London) couldn't imagine a happier place to live.
The creekside yard is lovely, the neighborhood is safe (I've left car and even house doors unlocked all night by mistake--nothing stolen). The neighbors are dear, parking is effortless (you get a driveway but there's ample street parking too), the weather is perfect, access to UC Berkeley is a breeze.
There are fancier neighborhoods in Berkeley but most are way up in the hills. This neighborhood is to my eyes the sweet spot for convenience and beauty.
The front door is arched. I'm big on faux painting (an earthy homespun look, and though I've painted over the faux interior the outside is subtly fauxed. The front door is round topped. The ceilings are sculpted, there's picture molding on many walls, lots of sweet touches, now all touched up.
