Hood River house description

Nestled in a residential area walking distance to shops, the Gorge Getaway is a newer home with a great view and bright decor.

While the thrill-seeking members of the group are windsurfing, kayaking, skiing, or whatever... the others content with a book or other quiet activities will enjoy the comfort of home while taking in the majestic beauty of the area through large picture windows.

Windsurfers and kite-skiers at 'the Marina' are visible on windy days. Sternwheeler vessels and tugboats pushing cargo barges ply these waters and provide an interesting nautical variety. All this, plus seaplane activity, can be seen from the comfort of the Gorge Getaway.

Needing a nice open layout for relaxing and visiting that would also sleep six in beds with privacy, I was very happy with this choice! As advertised, we found the property to be extremely clean, nicely situated near town, enjoyed a fabulous view as promised, and the owner was professionally on top of any concerns we had prior to arrival. The security deposit was returned promptly and in full. We found the neighbors to be friendly and helpful during an emergency 911 medical issue. We will be returning and urge you to rent this lovely home. The deck is spectacular and would be inviting in the summer months. Hood River is a special place to visit and we loved the Goodwill Boutique downtown for our last minute Christmas shopping. Local stores provided all the foodstuffs we needed and a local Chinese Restaurant was perfect for going out to eat. The access was very streamlined and keypads worked very well. Dependable directions and all the furnishings we desired, including a large open kitchen with lots of cabinets. Bedding and linens were in matching décor. Furniture was in very good condition and carpeting well kept. Wall unit heating elements worked efficiently. The striking feature for the six of us women was how bright and light the house was with views from large windows. Miniblinds provided privacy at night and we enjoyed watching football on the large flat screen TV. We never ran out of hot water and the dishwasher was a big help in making it feel like a vacation. We did not realize the couch was a hide-a-bed, it was so comfortable. You will not be disappointed in any way when you rent this amazing home.

We stayed here for a weekend and it was a fantastic place to stay. The location is a short walk (<10 minutes and flat!) from great restaurants and breweries (Double Mountain - yum) but is in a quiet neighborhood. The house had nice linens, towels, and amenities to use such as iron/ironing board, hair dryer, grill, etc. Great views from the top deck. Highly recommended!

Chose this home in Hood River as a base to explore the Columbia River Gorge. House looks pretty much like pictures. There is the business below the house, but the view of the mountains and river make up for it. House is convenient to town and there is a Safeway, Rite Aid and McDonalds not far away. Convenient for those items you may have forgotten (like I did) and a quick snack. Owner recently installed an electric garage door opener which made getting into the home very easy for the renter. Must like stairs....garage on one level, main house on another and bedrooms and one bath/laundry downstairs. Quiet and peaceful. I had a very nice and relaxing stay. Bed in MBR was very comfy. House is clean, light and bright. Owner is quick to respond to any questions and welcomes them.

Great place with wonderful views and walking distance to downtown but far enough away to be very quiet in a neighborhood close to the water. There are many very good restaurants in town and it is very hard to chose. Very clean and the owner's write-up and video were right on target. We are a group of older hikers and this was the perfect location to hike the Gorge, Mt Hood & Mt Adams. The owner is very responsive and very nice to work with, in fact, I have already booked another stay for 2016.

All in all, this property filled our needs for the short time we were in Hood River. It was basically what it claimed to be but for the price I was surprised it was so basic. The positives were the location, very central. The view, great for the 4th of July fireworks and nice to watch the action on the Columbia River, as long as you don't mind looking over a commercial parking lot right out your back window. Everything was there ready for use in the kitchen which was nice and having a washer and dryer was great. That said, most VRBO's offer the full use kitchen and w/d so i don't think that should be remarkable. What I was disappointed in was the overall worn feel of the place. The beds seemed like used, old hard beds that after two nights had both my husband and I quite sore. Although my kids did not complain their beds seemed quite uncomfy too. There were more rules than what i am used to in a VRBO and we were feeling a little paranoid upon departure we had met all of them. ie, expect to strip your own beds of the sheets and start the laundery for the cleaner as well as have the dishes done.Although we were told we didn't need to worry there is a note saying that if you are not there for garbage removal Thursday you must remove your garbage. I felt a little resentful the cleaning costs were so high given the expectations for the renter. I have not experienced this at any other VRBO i have stayed at and generally did not like it. We tried calling the owner as we could not get internet service at first and did not here back for a full 24 hours. There was an alternative number however we just didn't try as we did not consider this situation an emergency. Still, a small annoyance. So, in the end would i stay here again? No. As i said, it was not bad but not good either.

Owner response: I'm glad you enjoyed the view of the Columbia River, Mt Adams, and fireworks from our deck. While I prefer a parking lot in front of our home to a 2 story "view-blocking" building, some landscaping will help with this complaint. We'll be adding some shrubbery to screen the parking lot in September 2013. Internet access is important, so I very much wish you would have tried the 2 other phone numbers I have listed for contact. Regarding the mattress being too firm--I always liked it, but my preference is for a more firm mattress. I decided to buy a softer mattress that may have wider approval--so this was done in August 2013. Cleaning fees: Certainly an $80 cleaning fee seems steep if you're only staying 2 nights which was this renter’s experience. Sadly, if a group stays 1 night or 2 weeks, all the carpets still need to be vacuumed, toilets cleaned and laundry washed. Our cleaning fee is actually pretty cheap--I'm paying over twice that for cleaning a Cannon Beach home we manage. Regarding the “worn appearance,” in 2011 we installed a new upstairs carpet, flooring, and countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, and repainted. In January 2013 we bought new master bedroom furniture set. We work hard to keep it in good shape. Lastly rules--we do try to clearly communicate ways to avoid charges on the damage deposit. We don't expect guests to remove their garbage or recycling if it fits in the containers. Any excess of either does need to be packed out by the guests. Arriving at a home with garbage in the can is unpleasant. I'm going to start asking the local garbage collectors to do a special pickup in these situations--a bit more cost, but a more pleasant experience for my incoming guests.

What a wonderful place to meet up with family for Christmas. With relatives coming from Portland and Bend this was a great place to gather. We liked the spaciousness of the upstairs area and the beautiful view. We even got snow on Christmas morning. The kitchen was well equipped and had plenty of room for food preparation, serving and seating. This home is in a great location, we enjoyed being able to walk to town. The bedrooms were comfortable and it was especially wonderful to have the 2 bathrooms. This beats staying in a hotel by far! Karl the owner, bent over backward to stay in contact with us and was very friendly. He was very thorough with instructions for entering, use of the TV and wonderful sound system Etc.. We are hoping we will get a chance to stay in this great rental again sometime and would certainly recommend this home to anyone traveling in the Hood River area.

The house is a wonderful home. It's very comfortable. We did have a couple of issues, but i gave this an excellent rating because the homeowners were so responsive and so willing to fix any problems. I would be happy to work with them again. The home is a little walk to downtown, but not too far to walk if you are in good health. My parents would not have been able to make the walk, but it would have been a really short, quick drive for them.

I stayed here with two co-workers while working in the area. This home was perfect for our needs. The location was great, we could walk west to the Safeway and little burrito stand that we frequent and east to the great downtown establishments. The home was clean and well stocked. Karl was beyond expectations with his prompt communications and exceptional customer service. I would gladly stay here again.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1995

About the owner: My wife, Kelly, & I built this home in '95 after feeling a strong connection to Hood River and the Columbia River Gorge. We enjoy sharing our home with folks who also like the region. We do our best to provide a clean, nicely appointed home to our guests. We answer emails and phone calls promptly and we offer concierge-type knowledge to help you fully enjoy your vacation. Karl Hadley

Why the Owner Chose Hood River:
Windsurfing brought us to Hood River in 1992. We taught our kids to windsurf here in the summer and snow ski in the winter. Every year we discover more interesting things to do. Our kids are grown, but I still like windsurfing, and we do more hiking, bicycling, golfing and gliding. If a good book and the couch sound better one day, the local vineyards offer wonderful wine tasting, and the local restaurants provide exceptional cuisine to cap-off the day.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our home offers a sweeping view of Mt Adams to the north, and the Columbia River, with it's never-ending activity. You will be walking distance to the shops and restaurants of Hood River. The home theater system has a large flat screen TV, Blu Ray player, and it connects to the internet for Pandora music or Netflix if you have an account.
