St Ives is an artists' colony, fishing village and holiday haunt. Porthmeor Beach, famous for surfing, is surrounded by National Trust headlands and coastal cliff walks. The view from the apartment is stunning - rock pools, a wide fine sand beach and the Atlantic - calm one day, full of great white caps the next. The light is fantastic which explains why Porthmeor has been painted by so many famous artists: Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson, W. Barnes-Graham, Patrick Heron, The list is long and may inspire you to get out the charcoal!

A Civic Trust Award winner, Piazza is constructed from granite and glass with private access to Porthmeor (door with code for residents only). Next door is the well known St Ives School of Painting full of studios used by artists with open classes and studio sessions for visitors. You will be moved and delighted by the Hepworth sculptures all over town (2 at Piazza) and in the magical garden in her former studio on Barnoon Hill.

The contemporary Tate St Ives Museum, further along the beach, has a thriving outreach department with many workshops and working artists as tutors. Whether you surf, sketch or admire those who do, you will be part of a lively scene!

Our apartment is a double height glass-fronted studio. The living room, (20' by 12'), has a glass wall facing the ocean with a door to a balcony over Porthmeor. A double sofa-bed, and two single daybeds along one wall offer flexibility in sleeping arrangements but 4 is a comfortable maximum number of guests.

You will have a sea view from the well-equipped kitchen: fridge, gas cooker, microwave, stainless steel pans, kettle, toaster, Denmark/Denby china, slate top. Bathroom has a tub, power shower, vanity basin, WC. Open stairs lead to a double bedroom with queen size bed, built-in vanity and cupboard.

Another sliding glass wall opens to a South-facing terrace furnished for dining al fresco with a view of slate roofs, granite towers and circling gulls which give the town so much character. In the courtyard below is a full laundry room with washer and dryer.

The apartment is for all weathers; Winter seas are dramatic. Provided you have waterproofs, a tramp along the cliff path is exciting. You will return to warmth and music. Full off-peak storage heating with powerful convectors for quick top-up. Plentiful hot water. Just put on a CD and relax. Or, if you must work, then do so in comfort - we are installing WiFi new for 2012 - simply bring your own laptop and plug in!

We have found the apartment works enormously well off-season as a bolt-hole for recharging batteries or coping with a concentrated bit of work. Even in the busy school holidays the walk along the coastal path from Zennor leaves people behind, clears the cobwebs and lifts the spirits.

We are in the oldest part of St Ives: Downalong, the fishing quarter. The town itself is a jumble of craft ships, Cornish pasties, gourmet restaurants, small galleries, fudge shops, surfing gear, fishing skiffs, pubs, sandpipers and gulls.

St Ives is easily accessible by rail or road from major cities including London. Should you prefer to arrive by train, the walk from the station to Piazza is ten minutes along the sea front. Should you choose not to cook, you can eat in a different excellent restaurant every night.

Whatever your needs or desires, call us for a chat. We're full of suggestions gained from 20 years of our family using the flat for exam prep, convalescence, writing, escape from the children, holidays with the children, teenagers and grandchildren! We think the world is probably divided into two: those who know Porthmeor and the unfortunates who do not.

Wonderful location!

We had a wonderful holiday in St Ives made even better by the views from the apartment and the early October heatwave Who would have thought we would be on the beach in swimsuits October! The apartment is very comfortable, peaceful and relaxing with everything that we needed and easy access to all that St Ives has to offer. St Ives is lovely with lots to do and see and lovely restaurants. We are already planning a return visit!

Best UK Holiday Ever!

Guest: Keys (-)
Date of Stay: 04/23/11 Review Submitted: 09/20/11

Definitely the best UK holiday ever. The location of this fabulous apartment can't be beaten - on a stunning beach, you wake up and go to sleep with the sound of the waves. Better still is the fact that there is also a terrace over St Ives as well as the beach so you can be in the wild and in the thick of things all at the same time. The apartment itself is well equipped and was perfect for two of us. We had friendly and useful information both from Clare/Kay beforehand and from the local caretaker at our arrival. I'd recommend Porthmeor Cafe, Porthminster Beach Cafe and the Ocean Grill as places to eat splendidly, with terrace seating and with fabulous views. We had sunshine all week which obviously can't be guaranteed but I would highly recommend this as a holiday location.

Magnificent stay on the beach!

Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 09/20/11

We (my husband and I) had a wonderful week in july 2011 for our wedding anniversary. Tthe apartment is lovely with everything you would want or need. The views are breath taking both over the beach and the upstairs balcony over the town. We had some lovely evenings BBQ with family down on Pothgwidden Beach and lovely evenings sat on the upstairs balcony watching the world go by. Waking up to the sun blazing through all the windows was magnificent. I really shouldn't praise too much otherwise it may be fully booked when we want to return but its difficult not too. I have already booked for next year. The only downside would be the stairs as they are very steep in the apartment and there are quite a few to get up to the apartment but well worth it even with all my luggage. The car space was great we only moved the car once. St Ives has it all.

Wonderful Off-Season Stay at Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives

Guest: Lonnie (Fairfax, VA)
Date of Stay: 12/01/10 Review Submitted: 01/30/11

We rented this property for approximately two weeks in December. The condo is in a marvelous location: close to restaurants, shops, galleries, and about 15 minutes from the train station along a beautiful harbor walk. For provisioning, there is a small "7-11" type shop right across the street. The apartment is extremely cozy and comfortable with fantastic views from both lower and upper-floor balconies. The ocean and beach are literally steps away from this nest, located on the top floor of the complex. We rented a car for a couple of days and toured the bucolic Cornish countryside, including Penzance, Tintagel, Port Isaac, etc. Do be forewarned, though: the garage under the condo complex is extremely small and we would advise parking in one of the available car parks rather than the condo garage. The owner was genuinely concerned and interested in our enjoyment of the property throughout our stay and had left several recommendations in the unit. All in all, a wonderfully relaxing holiday living for a time in a small Cornish artists' colony. Highly recommended.

Owner response:We,too, love St Ives out of season with the changing weather and wide skies. There is a chance to meet and discuss many things with the local community who run the services in the town, the fishermen and the artists who work here all winter. We have now installed new heating and double glazed skylight so the apartment is cosy even in an Atlantic gale. It is our favourite hideaway.

Our stay was all that we hoped for and more. The location could not be better - literally on the beach yet close to the town. What better place to kick back and relax, no matter what type of weather. The terrace off the bedroom was an unexpected bonus, providing a view of the harbour as well. The flat was very comfortably appointed and provided everything we needed for our short break. We hope to make it a regular retreat!

"We had a gorgeous week at Piazza. We had lovely sunny weather and really enjoyed the apartment. I miss hearing the sound of the waves on the beach and people-watching from the balcony, not to mention the cream teas and fresh fish. It was heaven!"

The apartment is simply idyllic. We have been visiting for many years and as soon as we walk in and hear the sea the relaxation starts. Its great during bad weather because you can watch the chaos of the sky and sea in a storm but on a good day you can lie on a sun bed on one of the two balconies. When its windy on one it almost certainly won't be on the other. The apartment is ideally positioned within StIves and everywhere is within an easy walk. Some of the best seafood restaurants and the best fishmongers in the country. We'll be booking for next year.
