Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2004
I am a Distinguished Research Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. I was born in Hilo (Kilauea Avenue), attended Waikeawaena Elementary, Hilo Intermediate, Hilo High, and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. I went on to continue my studies at Syracuse University, and did post-doctoral work at the University of Chicago and Bryn Mawr College.
Why the Owner Chose Hilo
This is my Hilo home, which I purchased from my uncle when he moved to the mainland. It is on the property that my grandfather brought up his family, which was originally on one acre. My uncle built this house in the 50's and it now sits on 1/4 acre of the original property of my ancestors.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Renters have found that this home is located at a convenient place for them to visit relatives (or entertain them here), work on projects they come to Hilo to perform, and close to marketing, shopping, and places they want to visit around Hilo. They have commented on how open and lighted it is inside the house and enjoy the patio for relaxing and entertaining. They appreciate having the 3 bathrooms, the fully equipped kitchen and the cleanliness and upkeep.
The house is not directly on the street but backs up on the Waiakea High School playing field which is expansive and well maintained and neat - so it is quiet in the back of the house.

This property is beautifully maintained, ideally located, comfortable, welcoming and surprisingly quiet and private. All the facts about this property are accurate; the delightful surprise is the peaceful island tranquility that permeates throughout this home. The kitchen is well equipped, the outdoor deck fabulous, and the house is smartly designed to take advantage of the island trade winds. Several friends stopped by and were impressed with the property, so now the secret is out. If you find an open week for this property that works for you, it would be in your best interest to reserve it immediately because every friend and family member who saw it thought that this was a fabulous home and location, and perfect for their out of town guests and visiting family. The owner and property manager were very helpful. This is not your typical VRBO; you will feel at home the moment you enter the living room. My in-laws loved it so much, that they drove over every morning. They will be very disappointed if we return to Hilo and stay anywhere else. This was the perfect home away from home. We feel very blessed to have found this VRBO. If this is your first time to Hilo, you will find this home to be ideally located. It is close to all the major stores (Target, Safeway,Macy's, Home Depot, Wal-mart, etc.) as well as the popular local supermarket, KTA Super Stores, and three great open Farmer's Markets. The house is less then 10 minutes from the airport (but you don't have to be concerned about planes flying over head, since the planes arrive in the opposite direction). The location provides easy access to Puna, Volcano, Ka'u, Kalapana, and to Saddle Road where you can drive over Mauna Kea to the Waikoloa and Kona side of the island.
Owner response:Hello Jeri: Although not exactly a surprise for the honoree, I assume the family gathering went very well. I think the rain stopped and the sun came up while you were in Hilo. Thanks for making the effort to submit that superb review. It will be posted on the website and hopefully more potential renters will want to stay at my home on Kinoole.

Our group just wanted to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us to rent your Kinoole Street house. WE LOVED IT! The location was perfect and it was so large and spacious that we never felt crowded. We couldn’t believe how well stocked and comfortable it was. It had a rice cooker and all the blankets we could use, plus utensils, kitchenware, etc.
