Skagit valley is famous for growing vegetables, fruits and berries, and masses of daffodils and tulips. Many local produce stands/stores offer in-season local goods, as well as novelties and gifts. Summer Farmer’s Markets are open in both Mt. Vernon and Anacortes. In April the valley boasts a month-long Tulip Festival with tulip viewing, shopping, music and special events. Close-by historic La Conner has wonderful restaurants that include fine dining, cuisine featuring local ingredients, brew pubs, ice cream shops, sandwich shops and more. We’ll have a list of choices ready for you!

Skagit Valley is a great place to “headquarter” for visiting relatives or friends, or sightseeing and exploring diverse and scenic Northwest Washington State. For shopping, check out Mount Vernon and Burlington (8 mi), Seattle Outlet Mall (21 mi), or many specialty shops and fine art galleries in the La Conner and Anacortes areas. Skagit County has an abundance of fishing, boating, hiking and walking opportunities, as well as delightful local entertainment and theater venues. Skagit Valley is also host to numerous small and interesting wineries.

Discover charming La Conner (12 mi), Anacortes for shopping or taking a ferry to the San Juan Islands (27 mi), and scenic Whidbey Island (71 mi). Drive north to Bellingham (35 mi) to catch an Alaska Ferry, hike/walk a variety of beaches and trails, find treasures in historic Fairhaven, and shop and see many sites and restaurants in the area.

Spectacular North Cascades Highway is only 70 miles away. Drive to the top for truly high-mountain experience and scenery. Take a little longer to drive down the eastern slope to explore the Methow Valley and Western-themed town of Winthrop.

The Canadian border crossing (57 mi) is the gateway to Vancouver, BC, a large international city, and to scenic travel throughout British Columbia.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: Rich & I retired to Skagit County (from Bellevue, WA) to spend our retirement years in a more rural, laid-back, friendly environment. We love the area, the friendly people, great restaurants in La Conner and Anacortes, walking trails, mountains, beaches, local theater and music, etc. We lived in the 'Guest House' while we remodeled the 'big house' where we now live. The Guest House shares a huge deck with us (screen dividers maintain privacy) and the beautiful view of the farmland of Skagit Valley and Whidbey Island and Puget Sound beyond.

Why the Owner Chose Mount Vernon:
We chose the location because it is between grandkids in King County (50 miles) and those in Whatcom County (30 miles). We chose the house and guest house for the fabulous view and friendly small neighborhood. And for the privacy afforded by 2.3 acres of land. The first year here was spent remodeling the big house and this last year spiffing up the Guest House for a rental. We love the projects!

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The view and the location. Very close to small cities in Skagit County where there is good shopping and wonderful small shops and galleries. Easy day trips to Whidbey Island, Bellingham, Anacortes, site-seeing in the entire area. My favorite part is a two-mile roundtrip walk up a trail through the woods along a beautiful small lake. The neighborhood dogs accompany me most days, and they are good company!
