Historic Colonial Tavern - 1693 Cape Cod Estate

Year Purchased: 1970

Why the Owner Chose Sandwich

My husband bought the old Newcomb Tavern because it was close to Hyannis but if the job as Pathologist for Cape Cod Hospital didn't work out he could always commute back to Boston.
I never thought of renting my house as I always let people use it if I wasn't there. I have given it to many good causes for benefits and to be auctioned off to raise money for charity. I definitely believe in giving back as it comes back a hundred-fold.
The house was bought by my husband before I was even in the picture. He wanted it to be another "Animal House". I met him at one of his "parties" and fell in love on the spot....the party guest who never left.
The commute to Boston for my work wasn't bad, gave me a lot of time to think of all that had to be done on the house over the weekend
. So here we are 39 years later, all from a party at the "Animal House"

The Unique Benefits at this Estate

Being so close to Boston has been great. It is a quick ride on the P&B (Plymouth and Brockton) Bus. It picks you up and drops you off right at the airport terminals or in the center of Boston at South Station. Besides all that Cape Cod has to offer: whale watching, hiking, sailing, boating, surfing...there is lots to see in Plymouth and then there is Rhode Island with all the sites in Newport and Providence.

Owner's Map of Sandwich

My husband bought this house in 1970 and we got married in the back yard in '73. When we bought it there was electricity in only 3 rooms and the bathroom had this giant claw foot tub. Being from Miami, I instantly fell in love with the house, its' history and even loved all the work we had to put into it. Working all week at the hospital and laboratory made the renovation of this historic landmark a work of love. Finally after 13 years we had our wonderful son who has the same love for the old house. Becoming a widow with a 6 year old and surviving breast cancer all in one year made me realize how great the people in Sandwich are, with their generosity and kindnesses...it really did take a village ~! I have always loved sharing the house knowing that each person that stayed there would have a new found appreciation for the Colonial history that made America great. The Newcomb Tavern is a true gift and now it is my turn to be the best caretaker I can be so it can be passed on to others for many generations to come.
You will find so many artifacts from Italy, my favorite place in the world ( next to Cape Cod ), but there will also be so many things from my travels around the world. The painting above the main fireplace in the family room is from Suzdal Russia along with the Balalaika, treasures from my honeymoon.
I left the field of medicine and research after an unfortunate incident of a stalker, but the proverbial lemonade from lemon story was the start of my new company, Guardian Girls and the Guardian Girls Foundation. Guardian Girls sells self protection products and the proceeds go to benefit shelters for battered and abused women. My son has been the business brains behind it all, and what a joy it is to work with him.
The only difficulty is that I have had to base the business out of Florida as Massachusetts is still in the dark ages when it comes to laws allowing women to have pepper spray, so much for freedom to keep oneself safe.

A unique setting for a wonderful family summer get-together

Guest: Mark from Massachusetts (Brookline, MA)
Date of Stay: 07/30/10 Review Submitted: 11/01/11

We stayed for a week in the summer with our children and grandchildren -- 13 in all. The home itself is spectacular -- full of antiques and gorgeous furnishings. We all really felt the magic and history of the place, but not in a stuffy way. Croquet on the lawn; reading children's books aloud under the spreading branches of a wonderful tree in the yard; our 1 1/2 year-old greeting "George" every morning as she addressed his bust in the kitchen; playing the grand piano; walks around Shawme Pond -- these are only a few of the memories that are now part of our family's shared history. Yvonne is more than an owner; she is one of those rare generous souls who makes sure everything is more than perfect for her guests and becomes a family friend.

Beautiful Family Home

Guest: Denise (New York)
Date of Stay: 10/20/11 Review Submitted: 10/26/11

We recently had our wedding at this beautiful home with our family and close friends. Everyone that stayed with us fell in love with this house. And it was the perfect setting for an intimate small wedding, we could not have asked for more. The owner of the home made us feel like we were family and pulled out all the stops for us. We would definitely recommend this rental property for anyone looking for a beautiful home to enjoy with their family and friends. The pictures displayed online are true in nature and seeing is believing, very spacious, clean and well maintained. There is a pond across the way with beautiful swans, ducks and you can fish in it. Walk thru town and see the Glass Museum, plenty of sights to see.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your review. It is so important to me that anyone who stays at the Newcomb Tavern feel as if they are the most important people on Cape Cod and enjoy the surroundings of the late 1600's with the amenities of the 21st century. It has always been a core belief that " it is in giving that we receive". Everyone who has ever stayed in the Newcomb Tavern has always mentioned that it is a HAPPY HOUSE....may it always be so !

The house and location are even better than the pictures show. It was a perfect place for our family reunion. The owner provided us with everything we needed to feel at home and comfortable. The featherbed was so luxurious. In the evenings, we enjoyed duets on the piano from those in our group who played. Easy walk into town and to the beaches. Do stay in this marvelous and wonderfully preserved house if you can!

My family had the pleasure of being guests in the Newcomb Tavern, Sandwich. When first entering the home you have a feeling of welcome and warmth. Entering each room captures your interest and you find yourself wanting to explore the next room. Being able to move in and experience the beauty and history of this Historic home is a privilege. My family were all sad at the end of our stay and we all look forward to making this a yearly occurence. Thank you once again Yvonne for your care of this wonderful home and for allowing us to be your guests. Jeannie LaPoint, Naples, Florida
