The Newcomb Tavern was built in 1693. This elegant Colonial Inn, known as the Newcomb Tavern, was the lodging establishment for dignitaries during the Revolutionary War located on picturesque Shawme Pond with a working Grist Mill. It has all of the modern amenities of a professional grade gourmet kitchen, exquisitely designed with the chef in mind. The house is a showcase of the 17th century and one of the most photographed homes on Cape Cod and New England.Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, built in 1693 as an Inn.

There is an elegantly appointed dining room with seating for 12 that overlooks the Lake with a Venetian chandelier, six fireplaces, Grand piano, Venetian chandeliers throughout the house, three large living rooms, and an Old English pub/bar that opens out on to one of the lush terraces with a fountain, The Secret Garden. With another Terrace and Pergola entered from the French Doors from the very large Kitchen. This Terrace/Patio with a big Table and Chairs overlooks the lush gardens and manicured lawns perfect for outdoor games.
There are 3 very large Living Rooms with fireplaces, a Baby Grand Piano and rooms to congregate or separate for gatherings. Each room has its' own character and decorated with a specific motif in mind. There are antiques from Early America and from around the World, all fitting into the history of the home as Peter Newcomb traveled the World in search of whales for lighting oil.
There are 6 fireplaces and views of the Town with the Church Steeple from the 1800's and another Church Steeple from the 1700's. The views from every room are wonderful.
Every amenity is thought of and placed there for your perfect vacation. Having rented so many places with my large family I have been able to decide what makes the perfect vacation spot for those who want to come to Cape Cod. It is my joy to have you remember this vacation as your favorite. There are indoor and outdoor games for everyone as I love the idea of children staying at the Newcomb Tavern thus being able to experience life in Colonial America and see so many historical places and items right there in the house.

The Historic Newcomb Tavern built in1693 is surrounded by expansive and beautifully landscaped lush gardens with two outdoor terraces and a fountain and one with a beautiful pergola overlooking the expansive backyard and gardens.. The house is lavishly furnished with period antiques and is located in the heart of the historic district, next to a 1600's Grist Mill, on a lake and approximately one mile from the ocean. Walk down the tree lined scenic street to Heritage Museum and Gardens, walk across the street around the pond to the Thornton Burgess Museum or the famous Historic Hoxie House built in 1637 or over to the Dunbar Tea Room or just over to the Sandwich Glass Museum. You can envision yourself in the middle of a Historic New England Village with beauty all around.
A short walk to Heritage Museum and Gardens, across the street from the Sandwich Glass Museum and steps away from several restaurants and fine shops. This stately 1693 Colonial Inn is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. It is one of the most photographed homes on Cape Cod because of its location on Shawme Pond with the Grist Mill, the Dunbar Tea Room, the First Church with its grand Steeple and more importantly its historical place in the Revolutionary War.
I love the idea of children experiencing the historical nature of this Colonial Inn, the oldest Inn on Cape Cod, built in 1693 and the site of some of the most historic meetings of the Revolutionary War Period in the area. It was the home of Timothy Ruggles, the representative from Massachusetts to the New York Convention where our Founding Fathers were deciding on whether to break with the King of England and form our own country, the United States of America. Not much has changed in the old Inn, the modern conveniences are pretty well hidden....moreless

The best activity is driving down Route 6A, also known as the OLD KING'S HIGHWAY. It is listed as one of the most scenic roads in America, dotted with Antique homes. Many of the homes are from the 17th and 18th centuries, all in pristine condition. The by-lanes and roads leading off either to the ocean or to lakes or meadows are all unique and worth traversing. Just bring a map and go East on Route 6A through the Village of Sandwich, then Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennisport, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Truro and Provincetown. Go to the North of Rte. 6A for the little roads to Cape Cod Bay, and see some of the most beautiful sites on the East Coast.
There are boatloads of Antique Shops and 'Not-so Antique' Shops to wander around; surprises are everywhere depending on which old house has emptied its' attic, garage or boat house. The flowers of Cape Cod are so unique as they climb rocks, and adorn the English gardens of years gone by.
Boating, racquetball, shopping, wildlife viewing ( in and out of the bars) , basketball, mini golf.

About: The Newcomb Tavern, built in 1693, is a true gift and now it is my turn to be the best caretaker I can be so it can be passed on to others for many generations to come. You will find so many artifacts from the world over, my favorites being treasures from Cape Cod. I left the field of medicine to start a company, GuardianGirls.com that helps women to stay safe with the use of our many Pepper Sprays etc. The only difficulty is that I have had to base the business out of Florida as Massachusetts is still in the dark ages when it comes to laws allowing women to have pepper spray, so much for freedom to keep oneself safe. I have been so honored to share my home with others and donate it to so many causes both in the US and abroad. The house has so much historical significance with the beginning of the Colonists coming over from Europe. You can see what the early settlers had for accommodations in the early 1700's as there have been so few changes to the house. What a treasure the Newcomb Tavern 1693 is for generations to come. I was married in the Newcomb Tavern in 1973 and having been working on its' restoration ever since; it is truly a labor of love. After being widowed in 1995, my son and I have had the ability to live and work around the world, thus giving us the opportunity to share our home with others.
The house was bought from the Newcomb Family who had it since 1693. I consider it to be a treasure and it has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since its inception. The Newcomb Tavern 1693 is restored to the beauty of the Colonial Architecture unique to this property. It is the oldest Tavern on Cape Cod and has the original Tavern license. How easy it is to step into the past before the Colonies decided to break away from the King of England and before the cry of 'Taxation without Representation'. The Newcomb Tavern 1693 now has all of the amenities of the 21st century but delicately hidden. It is easy to transport yourself back to the Colonial Days, especially with so many other Colonial homes and structures in the area. A short walk around the lake is the oldest house on Cape Cod, the HOXIE HOUSE, built in 1637 and open to the public with furniture of the 1600's. A walk down Grove Street will relax you and allow yourself to be surrounded by the beauty of Nature; birds singing and Swans playing in the lakes. There are trails and hikes to see so much of the free land that the Town of Sandwich has purchased to keep the area pristine for generations to come. Please read about the Newcomb Tavern and the historic significance it had in the Revolutionary War. It took the side of King George, due to the residence of Timothy Ruggles who married the widow Newcomb in 1735, after she already had 7 children with William Newcomb. Timothy Ruggles was a prominent statesman well known for his sympathy for the Crown of England. Even after Mr. Ruggles was banished to Nova Scotia with the other British sympathizers, the Newcomb Tavern was kept in the Newcomb family by all of the children from William Newcomb. You will see on the walls many documents pertaining to the Newcomb Tavern, and the role it had in early America as an Inn and Tavern for travelers to stay in their journeys.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Historical Architecture of the true Colonial House but with very high ceilings and closets in all of the bedrooms ( unknown for the period ). It is a unique house and the fact that it was in the Newcomb Family until we bought it is extraordinary. It is still filled with so many artifacts from the period before the Revolutionary War and then in Colonial America. The Village of Sandwich is a step back in time with so many homes that date back to the 1600's and 1700's. The Grist Mill and Lake in front of the house was used by early Colonists to grind their corn, wheat and barley. The Tavern was situated next to the Town Hall so that persons coming to the Town Hall for business would have a place to lodge and purchase alcohol ( yes, those licenses date back to the late 1600's ). One of the old Tavern licenses is still on display for all to see ( unusual because the license was commonly plastered on to a prominent wall and then just torn down for the next one to follow...) Many of the artifacts from the old Newcomb Tavern have been generously given to me by the Newcomb family. To be honest, I feel that I am just the caretaker for the old Inn and it is still the possession of the Newcomb Family ! I take that responsibility very seriously in any restructuring that has to take place to maintain this wonderful Tavern. The Town is strict in zoning , trying and building, trying to keep our Town in pristine condition to be enjoyed by residents and visitors. This is a one of a kind house, so elegant, original in its' architecture with so few changes from when it was built in 1693. Take a step into the period before the thought of separation from the King was even considered.
