We loved this place, but it's for special people. It is exactly as advertized: in the 20's and 30's it was one of a series of cabins run by the current owner's father - an old style mom and pop "motel.' The owners moved this cabin to their own property on Awendaw Creek and it seems just like it once might have been, The kitchen/living room/dinning room are out on the screened in porch, the shower is out back, the old claw foot tub, toilet and sink are accessible from both bedrooms. We loved canoeing Awendaw Creek, sitting out on the dock to watch the sun sink, fabulous shrimp from Carolina Seafood, hiking in the National Forest and going out to Bull's Island and Boneyard Beach. Yeah there is satellite TV but we never even turned it on. The owner's extensive collection of local artifacts are on display in the Village Museum in McClellanville and there is a great museum catalog available in the cabin. His mom runs a great restaurant - the Seeway.

We had a great time!! The location is fantastic for such lovely beauty: the estuary leading to the Atlantic, the Francis Marion Forest, as well as history of two wars. The listing is describe pretty accurately. The overall cabin is geared towards outdoor living. The kitchen was a bit more rustic than we had expected(only 1 sink); but the owners were helpful in terms of our adaptation. When I mentioned that I really cooked & was there an apron; she was quick to loan me one of hers. Stephanie always answered my texts when I needed information; how to get to the beach, etc. When Tim found out that we liked to gaze at the constellations, he loaned my husband some charts & a kalidescope of the stars. They were helpful in terms of our inexperience with crabbing. We have a special needs daughter; she is 32. Tim and Stephanie were wonderful with all of her inquiries. Both Tim and Stephanie are knowledgeable in terms of the history of the area. Worth your time if you enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the early history of the United States.

Unfortunately it rained almost the whole time we were there, so we were not able to enjoy the water=related activities available. Tim shared a brief history of the Awendaw area which was much appreciated. It's good to have someone with a long family history in the area fill us in. When we arrived we noticed that a lot of weeds had grown up around the cabin, so it was not exactly like the photo; I suppose the recent rains contributed to that. We enjoyed the screened-in porch and used it a lot during the frequent rains. We even prepared a meal in the kitchen there on the porch. The shower could only be accessed from the outside, so we only used the tub in the cabin due to the frequent rain. The area was quiet with the exception of the rifle range activity way off in the distance (not a problem for us). We thoroughly enjoyed the singing of the birds in between the rains. The goats were very cute neighbors and fun to watch. The roads nearby are flat and great for biking. Without rain we would have brought ours bikes and taken advantage of that feature. The magazines/brochures placed in the cabins were ideal to inform us of activities/sights in the area. Along with Tim's recommendations one will not lack for things to do. Be sure to go to their family restaurant, Seewee Seafood Restaurant; the she-crab soup is top notch.

This was our 5th visit to Kayak & Cabin! Stephanie and Tim are great hosts, everything is perfect for us there. It is so peaceful and relaxing, we wish we could stay forever! We never even turn the TV on while we are there. We spend most of our time fishing, crabbing and just enjoying our time together. My children ages 11 and 7 love it also, as well as my parents. My husband counts down the days until our next visit!

We happened across this cabin by accident and we are sure glad we did. We felt right at home from the moment we arrived. One of the owners came out and welcomed us and allowed our 3 boys ages 9, 7, & 2 to go help her feed the goats a bottle. They absolutely loved that! Their dogs were as sweet as pie and the boys enjoyed feeding them their leftovers. She even had the space heaters on for us in the bedrooms so they were nice and warm. Our first evening we unloaded all of our stuff, started the wood burning stove on the porch, lit the charcoal grill, and went to look around and check everything out. The paddle boats and kayaks were so much fun. I think we enjoyed them as much as the kids did. We brought our Jon Boat and the guys immediately put in the boat and took to fishing Saturday morning. They had a great day of fishing on the water. We had some friends come midday on Saturday. We enjoyed lunch and wine with them, more fishing of course, and later oysters and pickled shrimp under the pavilion. It was a beautiful fun family day. We and our children will remember this trip for a long time. It was better than Carnival Cruise Line! Sunday morning we got up at 7:30. I cooked the guys some breakfast and they headed out to get more trout. My two year old and I stayed behind to clean up breakfast dishes and sweep a bit. After cleaning up we put on our life jackets and hoped in the creek on the kayak to find the rest of the family. When we caught up to them they had a pile of trout in the boat and more just kept on biting. Many of them were too small to keep but catching them was just as much fun!! Thank you to our hosts for a wonderful family vacation. We can’t wait to come back again!!!!

We are always on the hunt for old cabins to stay in....it is getting harder and harder to find them. This adorable 1920's cabin is just the kind of place we like-rustic and quaint. We were even more excited when we met the owner and heard the story about the cabin and it's history with his family. We had planned on going out the first night, but settled into the chairs on the peninsula and were so relaxed we never left that night...when we did venture out there was so much to see in the area-Bull Island and the Seewee Restaurant were highlights. If you are seeking quiet time, a little kayaking or canoeing, and a true cabin experience, this is just the place.

The owners were VERY nice people...nice as nice could be. But some of the ammenities listed are probably a little bit off. For instance, the satellite TV with HBO, etc...is about a 13" portable TV that had major issues as far as getting any kind of picture...and it was in the bedroom without the air conditioner, so very hot as well. The wall unit air conditioner, when we arrived, was "frozen". The owner nicely offered to give us a $50 discount for it, but we were able to get it to work part time and told them that we would pay the full amount. But a couple of days it was not working. The shower outside around the back of the cabin had spiders, webs, some hair from a previous user and a coccoon (moth?) in it. We were not expecting club med, but the least that could have been done was to have the shower cleaned before someone came. Towels and wash cloths were also VERY old/worn down and discolored (bleach?)...certainly need to be updated. The other MAJOR issue we had was palmetto bugs (i.e., very large roaches). The first night, I had to chase and kill three of them in the bedroom...right while we were trying to go to sleep...and we had NO food out that would have attracted them (this was about four hours after we had arrived). And we saw many of them in the 'kitchen' on the front porch. It made it very uncomfortable in regards to try and just relax and enjoy ourselves...to the point where we actually left a day early.

Owner response: We have worked hard for seven years, have books of great reviews and would have been more than happy to address any concerns.

My husband, myself and my parents and the dog jingles all had a wonderful time. It was a week of total relaxation. We enjoyed talking with Jim so much. Went and saw his collection at the museum. Jingles didn't know what to think about the funny looking dogs (the goats) We were surprised at how many things were provided for our stay. We slept like little fat babies. Hope to return on our 2 year anniversary and bring the whole family.
