Our Most Enjoyable San Miguel Vacation Ever

My wife and I spent the month of October, 2012, in this beautifully-appointed condo in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. We live year-round in Mexico and visit San Miguel frequently for extended stays. But this was our most enjoyable San Miguel vacation ever. The reason? Location, location, location. The condo is located on Calle Mesones, dead center in San Miguel’s “centro historico” district. (Often, rentals advertised as being in “centro” San Miguel are in fact a long way from the action.) Our favorite restaurants and bars were, at the maximum, no further than five minutes away on foot. In fact, most of them were only a minute or two away. So, obviously, we never had to take a taxi anywhere. And though taxis are usually plentiful, it’s a well-known phenomenon in San Miguel that on rainy days taxis simply vanish into a parallel universe. The apartment itself is designer-decorated, with a large bed on the main floor and a fold-out couch upstairs. We slept on the fold-out couch (surprisingly comfortable) in order to use the downstairs as our waking space. Off the upstairs bedroom (with its own large full bath) is a lovely terrace, perfect for a glass of wine under the folding umbrella or sunbathing. My wife and I spend many hours a day on our laptops and the included wireless proved to be flawless. The maid, Reyna, came twice a week and was both unobtrusive and super-efficient. Also worth noting were the purified/pressurized-water on-demand system and U.S style, properly-flushing toilets. In Mexico these features aren’t necessarily standard in vacation rentals. In summary, if you want to be at the center of San Miguel’s hustle-and-bustle, this apartment is perfect.Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

I have been traveling to San Miguel for thirty five years and what a "gem" I have discovered. Arriving on July l, 2012 this was my second year to spend a month in this condo. It is surrounded by great restaurants, nite life and theatre/gallery events. Need a taxi.......you can catch one right at the front door of the condo. Bonanza Grocery 11/2 blocks up the street has a great selection with many American brands. The condo looks liked the photos and offers a very secure/safe place for a solo traveler and the owner and her housekeeper go out of there way to make your stay very memorable. The noise was not a problem for me as I ran the fans everynight which made me sleep like a baby. I recommend this condo to all of my saavy world traveling Texas friends as I find the location perfect for me and much more convenient than a hotel for my extended stay. That is why it has become my home away from home.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

Spent the month of Aug. 2012 in this condo. The condo has nice accommodations and is well stocked. The location is the best. Since 1984 I have rented houses and condos in most parts of SMA. Normally spend a month in the winter and one in the summer. First time in this condo about 5 years ago. Since then this is always my first choice. Because I do not plan ahead it has not always been available.Recommended for: Tourists without a car.

The apartment was well located on Mesones Street, close to the Jardin and to shops and restaurants. You have to climb up one flight of stairs to get to the apartment. The apartment was clean and the color decor charming. The layout was an open plan more like a studio suite which disappointed us as we thought the bedroom was separate. The lower floor consisted of a small kitchen with a bar fridge and gas stove, a small half bath, and a large room with the bed located at the end of it. There was a huge round dining table in the room. a desk, TV and a couple of chairs for watching TV. Upstairs at the top of the stairs was a charming compact space with a comfortable chesterfied and next to it a full bathroom and doors opening up to a small terrace. Water pressure was excellent. If I had a complaint it would be the noise on the week-ends from the bars and discos surrounding the apartment. Music with a heavy beat would go on sometimes from 4 pm to 6 am and it was loud and difficult to drown out which made it unpleasant to sleep or even watch TV. We went away on week-ends to escape the noise. In my opinion this apartment is especially not suitable for older people.Owner response: The apartment has two full baths. The one downstairs has a shower, the one upstairs has a bathtub with shower head as well. The apartment has a large downstairs room with French doors onto two tiny balconies. There is one set of French doors onto the balcony. There is another, double-glazed set of French doors inside and two sets of curtains, one with blackout material, for light and noise abatement. In addition, there are three fans, two of which are quite large, to provide white noise when there are celebrations or street noise. The apartment is situated a block and a half from the main plaza, called the Jardin, and as such, is subject to noise from fireworks, parades and church bells.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: I came to San Miguel de Allende to study Spanish and fell in love with the historical center of this charming colonial town. Although I had spent 34 years in Italy, I prefer living in San Miguel for its accessibility, quality of life and beauty. I have been here five years and each year the town becomes more interesting and livable, with a lively cultural scene consisting of concerts, theater, music and film festivals, wonderful restaurants and a marvelous, thriving community.
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico:
I initially thought I might live in the apartment itself, but felt this particular property could be upgraded and remodeled to make a truly comfortable place for visitors.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Location, location, location. On our block we have the Angela Peralta Theater, art galleries, a French bakery, marvelous restaurants, a charming café and a couple of nightspots. We are less than a five-minute walk from the main square (Parroquia), around the corner from the Bellas Artes (art exhibits, lectures and concerts are held there) and a block and a half from the Biblioteca, a de facto community center.
