Murphys apartment description

The summer crowds are gone and now is the best time to visit the Mother Lode and the mountains.
Our vacation Annex is all about location and comfort.
Murphys is one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the Sierra Nevada foothills because it offers some of everything people want: boutique wineries, Gold Rush history, skiing, outdoors adventures and fine wining and dining. And it a short drive to outdoor activities including snow play in winter. Bear Valley Ski Resort will be open at the end of November, just a short drive up the hill.
And we have hiking year-round, fishing, kayaking, mountain climbing, cave exploring and more. Just outside town you will find vineyards, streams and mountains and forests.

Yosemite is a day trip away, and Fall and Winter are the least crowded times of year.
We want our guests to be as comfortable as possible. So we completely refurbished part of an 80-year-old house and have made comfort changes based on feedback from our guests.
Most guests come for weekend visits, but the Annex is comfortable for longer stays so you can explore what all region has to offer.
In summer, the town plays hosts to festival weekends and music events, and the lakes are near enough for a cool swim or kayaking.
Fall offers some of the best hiking (less crowded trails and cooler temperatures) and is a great time of year to visit Calaveras Big Trees Park, or drive over the mountains for the colorful display.
Spring brings wildflowers to the foothills, and a chance to celebrate Irish Days.
Winter provides great cross-country and downhill skiing, sledding and snowmobiling, just up the highway.
And if you just want to hang out, there are all those wineries and restaurants within eight blocks.

The Stone Annex was designed to accommodate two guests with comfortable amenities in more than 600 square feet. The Stone Annex includes one large bedroom, a full bath, a living room, hallway and mini-kitchen.
Designed primarily for two adults, the Annex can handle up to two additional guests on the comfortable living room futon at a small extra charge.

The Annex is decorated throughout with the work of local artists and photographers, and every room is freshly painted and equipped with attractive comfortable furniture collected from the surrounding area.
The bedroom has a new queen-sized bed, large closet, desk/dressing table with mirror and chairs. The living room has the sofa/futon, a comfortable recliner chair, a new television with cable and an electric 'fireplace' with heater. WiFi is available.
The mini-kitchen has an all-new slate surface, an under counter refrigerator and a new microwave. There is no cook top/oven but we added a new counter top toaster oven, plus coffee maker and basic kitchen supplies. And in response to a guest's suggestion we recently added a new grill with a cook-top just outside the door.
And, an essential in Murphys, a wine bottle opener and wine glasses.
There is no dining room but several good restaurants are nearby, and TV trays are provided for those who want to eat a light meal at home. Or you can eat outdoors in lawn chairs under an umbrella.
A combination washer-dryer is available.

The bathroom is outfitted with all you need. Grab bars have been added to shower/tub and toilet for added comfort and safety.
Ample parking is available directly in front of the building, within feet of the front door.
The front yard has been landscaped recently to reduce water use.

Location is Everything
We are about a ten minute walk to Main Street where the wine tasting rooms, restaurants and shops are concentrated. We are away from the
noise, but close enough to get there quickly.
Bring your bikes.

Most of the wineries in Murphys are small boutique operations, selling only through the shops or at the wineries. We will be glad to suggest our favorites, or you can explore on your own.
Ironstone Winery, just outside of town, has tours, food and stunning gardens. Several wineries offer musical events throughout the summer.
Murphys was established as a gold camp in the first year of the Gold Rush, and has maintained the small-town charm while making room for tourists, festivals, skiers, hikers and people who like to explore.
We are about a two hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area, or Sacramento, or Yosemite National Park.
The town is located on State Highway 4 which leads up to the Bear Valley Ski Resort in winter, and across the High Sierra to the East when the snow melts.
We are within an easy drive of great hiking, kayaking, sight-seeing, skiing and fishing.
Two great California State Parks are close by: Calaveras Big Trees is to the east, about 15 miles uphill, home to 6,000 acres of wilderness including two Giant Sequoia groves; and Columbia State Park, where the Gold Rush days are preserved and celebrated, is just south along historic Highway 49. If you need more wineries, Amador County is just north.
Murphys is small enough not to have incorporated, but the town mothers and fathers have been smart enough to voluntarily keep the Gold Rush charm and architecture, preserving and refurbishing many 1800's building.
There's more to Murphys than wine. The town also boast a craft brew pub, several fine restaurants, history tours, various shops including consignment, a chocolate shop and a village toy store.
You can get almost any kind of food here from fine steaks, Italian, Mexican, Organic, Vegetarian and crafted pizza.
Murphys has no fast food franchise operations, and most local businesses are privately owned and operated.
A Little House History
The Stone Annex is the newer half of a house built originally in the 1920s to house the medical staff of a sanatorium which was once located across the street. People came here for the 'healthy air.'
The hospital is long gone, but several giant Sequoias are still growing nearby, remnants of a time when people were sent to Murphys for the healthy climate and peace and quiet. After Giant Sequoias were discovered by white settlers just up the road in the 1850s, many pioneers planted them in their yards.
The Annex and the adjacent house have been totally renovated in the past two years, and the yards newly landscaped to be drought tolerant.

The owners live next door. Your other near neighbors include three local chefs, and several wine makers.

What We Expect
We expect you to have a good time and be good guests, and we will do whatever we can to help.
Guests are asked to strip the bed and leave the apartment clean, which helps us keep the costs down.

The photos provide a closer look at the Annex and the surrounding community.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Murphys is the center of Calaveras County's wine production, with more than 25 small wineries or wine shops nearby, plus easy access to mountain recreation. We are between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, about 2 hours in either direction.

Wine tasting, touring and shopping are available year round.

We are close to good golf courses just downhill, mountain scenery uphill, and Yosemite National Park is about two hours South.

Every season is different, and Spring and early summer offer wildflowers along hiking trails and near town. Irish Days and the Frog Jump (county fair) are major Spring events.

Summer is peak season for tourists as people come to enjoy Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Lake Alpine, and hiking the high Sierra. Numerous music venues and festivals are held throughout the summer.

Fall provides easy access to high mountain color.

Winter closes the mountain pass above Murphys, but opens the ski season at Bear Valley. Downhill, cross country, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling are all available.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2012

About the owner: We retired to Calaveras County ten years ago, originally to an isolated cabin in the mountains. Eventually we settled in Murphys because we love its feeling of community. We also enjoy the easy access to the mountains for hiking and skiing, great places to eat (our hobby) and musical events. Many of our friends are musicians, outdoors people and volunteers for a number of good causes. We spend time working as volunteers for non-profit organizations. Both of us are docents at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, lead guided walks summer and winter and help raise money for educational programs. We support the local Habitat for Humanity projects and follow our grandchildren's sports , Scout and school activities. For the past two years a lot of our time has involved planning, directing or doing the renovation of the Stone Annex and our home next door. We have been blessed by support from friends, craftsmen, and the community.

              Why the Owner Chose Murphys:
We settled in Murphys because it was a perfect fit for us after visiting in the area for almost 30 years, and the weather is near-perfect. Our property came on the market just as we sold our former home in Sacramento, and we decided we were not afraid of the challenge of renovating two houses. We also were really interested in bringing back a historical property where people could live, or visit, in comfort and safety. Affordable housing is in short supply here.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Good neighbors. Good friends. Good food. Good climate. Close to everything we enjoy.
