Year Purchased: 1993
About the owner: Bart and Birthe Francis are 72 and 73 years old. Bart was brought up in Santa Barbara, but moved to the Boston area as a teenager where he completed high school and went to college. Birthe was born and raised in Aalborg, Denmark where she still has family. After getting her degree in physical education, she was offered a job at a college near Boston, where she met Bart, who was attending the Harvard Business School after a 3 year stint in the Marines. The rest is history.
We were married in Aalborg in 1968, and now have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. We lived successively in New Hampshire, a small town near Boston, Mexico City, Toronto, and finally, back to Santa Barbara for the past 18 years, mostly following Bart's career in medical supplies and equipment.
We have always loved traveling, occasionally on quite extended trips to exotic locations. The theme of these trips is invariably for us the people and their cultures and also being able to experience areas of great natural beauty. We have also been fortunate enough to return to Denmark almost every year, with our family when the kids were young, where Birthe's family has a summer house in a beautiful area that we are able to use.
We chose to come to Santa Barbara 18 years ago because we wanted to live in a city that we could really enjoy and where we could retire. All that needed to happen was for Bart to find work here, which he did.
Santa Barbara is an amazing place. It is not only beautiful with its glorious beaches and mountains, but it also has a fantastic cultural life on many levels, with 2 universities and a junior college, symphony, opera, ballet, theaters, choruses and the world famous Music Academy of the West in summer session.
In retirement, Bart is a docent at the SB Museum of Natural History and a volunteer naturalist on the whale watching boats and island hiking trips. In addition he sings in a local chorus. Birthe is an avid reader and gardener. Both enjoy hiking, skiing, swimming and golf.
Why the Owner Chose Mission Canyon: We bought our home on Tunnel Road because we knew that we wanted to stay in Santa Barbara, and, while we wanted to be close enough to the city to be able to easily access its many benefits, we also wanted to experience every day the peacefulness and beauty that a property such as this in Mission Canyon has to offer. Ready access to the hiking trails and Botanic Gardens has been a great plus that we take advantage of most days, and yet it is still easy to get down town or to the beaches.
The house, which was built by a builder for himself in 1975, is unusually solid and the open layout of the kitchen living/dining room area with its close connection to the patio and its large oak trees really appealed to us.
Over the years, we have made many improvements to the house, and the gardens have been a continuous work in progress, but give us so much pleasure.
Peaceful serenity close to nature with ready access to the beaches and the cultural life of a vibrant small city. We love it and think that you will too.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We will be gone from June 1- Sept 2. Minimum rental period is 1 month, but we would offer a special discount for renters interested in staying in our home for the entire 3 month period.
