This 3BR, 2.5 bath home is a stunning marriage of historic and modern architecture- a quick walk to everything in downtown Charlottesville and downtown Belmont, yet boasting sweeping views of the mountains from many windows. Look out one window and get a direct view of Monticello Mountain; look out another, and get a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally built in 1920, the house now blends the traditional moldings, original pine flooring, high ceilings, and large windows of its origins with an ultra-modern, architect-designed third-story master suite and rooftop deck addition constructed primarily of glass. The cozy details of the historic home have been preserved while adding such modern comforts as a whole-house sound system, (including the third-floor master bedroom and ensuite bath), a jetted tub with aromatherapy and phototherapy, a two-person limestone shower, extensive custom-made cabinetry that opens with the touch of a finger, and a newly updated modern kitchen. Cable and wifi throughout.
Monticello Guest House has been professionally decorated with a blend of early 19th century antique, vintage mid-century, and more contemporary furnishings, complemented by a truly interesting collection of art. The house has been carefully designed to be beautiful, but functional and comfortable as well.
Monticello Guest House has three large, comfortable bedrooms: the master bedroom on the third floor has dramatic mountain views, custom everything, an attached rooftop deck overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains perfect for watching the sunset over a glass of wine or romantic dinner, and an ensuite bath with a large jetted tub and two-person limestone shower, and custom-made concrete trough sink. Look out the windows and see the treetops and the mountains and truly feel like you are in another world!
There are two large, pretty bedrooms on the second floor, each with comfortable queen beds, luxurious linens, and tasteful furnishings. The two bedrooms on this floor share a full bath with a clawfoot tub/shower, whitewashed wood floors, beadboard walls, and pedestal sink.
There is an additional small room on the second floor with a twin pull-out couch that can be used for a 7th guest or as a place to relax, read, and enjoy the mountain views. A provided queen-sized aerobed can expand sleeping capacity to 9 guests.
On the first floor, there is a living room with space to gather, play games, watch TV, or chat; a formal dining room that seats 8; a recently updated and modern, fully-equipped kitchen with custom poured concrete countertops, ceramic tile floors, and stainless steel appliances; and a powder room with ceramic tile floors and brand new everything.
The outdoor spaces are equally conducive to relaxing or entertaining: there is a large front porch perfect for people-watching and reading, and a large back deck with grill, dining table, sand lounge chairs that is great for evening cookouts or mid-day sun worshipping. The backyard has a grassy area for hanging out, pretty gardens, and a one-car garage. There is plenty of on-street parking right next to the house.
Be sure to take a careful look at the pictures: it is nearly impossible to describe the unique beauty of this house- both in its warm original details and its striking modern addition.

Monticello Guest House is a quick, easy walk (5 min) from both the downtown mall and downtown Belmont. Enjoy everything that both of those locations have to offer: amazing food at multiple celebrated restaurants within easy walking distance, great bars, historic buildings, boutique shopping, parks, a wonderful art scene, and a vibrant local community. It is also a quick 5-minute drive from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, a 10-minute drive to the University of Virginia, and a 10-minute drive from multiple places to enjoy great hiking, mountain biking, and trail running.
While the house is located easy walking distance to everything the city of Charlottesville has to offer, it presents stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the city of Charlottesville from almost every window. The nearly all-glass third story master suite and attached sun deck have breathtaking views.
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: My husband was born and raised in Charlottesville and did his undergraduate work in architecture at UVA. I am originally from CT and got 'hooked' by Charlottesville in the usual way: I came down here to study English Literature and eventually education at UVA and never left. We are avid travelers who love to go places that, like Charlottesville, have great food, great mountain views, and lots of opportunities for hiking. We are also both really interested in design- my husband is an architect, and I love creating and living in interior spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Kevin is a modernist with an appreciation for the quality and beauty of old materials, and I am drawn to antique and vintage furnishings and textiles- things with history. Together, I think our styles blend into a really interesting and unique aesthetic.
Most importantly, we are the parents of two very active young boys, one very active dog, and one very grumpy old cat.
Why the Owner Chose Charlottesville: We bought Monticello Guest House in 2003, just a few days after I turned in my dissertation. We bought it because it had everything we were looking for: it was located in Belmont, a neighborhood we have always loved; it was walking distance to the downtown mall; it had incredible mountain views of both Monticello Mountain and the Blue Ridge despite being in the middle of the city; we were drawn to the 1920s architecture and details; and it is constantly filled with the most incredible, warm light. I think the light in the house was really the clincher.
The day we bought the house, my husband said, 'We need to put a third floor addition on this house.' And so he did. It was a long process, a real labor of love. Every single detail of that addition-both interior and exterior- was painstakingly thought out and chosen. It is one of the most interesting, unique spaces I have been in, and I used to love falling asleep up there in what felt like a nest at the top of the trees, with a view that seems to go on forever.
We lived there for 5 years before moving out to the countryside- we love our new home, but we still miss being able to walk to get a cup of coffee, stroll down to the downtown mall or downtown Belmont for dinner, or hit the City Market on warm summer mornings. We especially miss the spring evenings on the third-floor deck, enjoying the breezes while we drank wine, listened to music, and watched Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains burst into bloom above, below, and all around us.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We think the primary benefit of this house is that it is located a quick walk to the restaurants, bars, and shops in downtown Belmont and the downtown mall, yet it has panoramic views of the mountains and plenty of space. We are biased, but we also happen to think it is a pretty cool-looking house.
