This is the 4th time staying in Unit 410. We used to stay next door at the Royal Kona Resort and often saw the Hale Kona Kai and wondered if any of the units were rented. We found out they were and we have stayed here every trip ever since. As otheres have stated, this condo is maintained year in and year out. It is quiet and the location is dynamite. You really don't even need a car when staying here as downtown Kailua and many restaurants are within 5-10 minute walk. But if you have rented a car, there is assigned parking here that doesn't cost extra like most hotels in the area. There is a washer/dryer on every floor. The 'extras' in the condo are too many too list but believe me when I say you don't need to bring a thing. They even have beach chairs, beach towels and a cooler for your use! How convenient is that? And as always, they have a little greeting package to kick you off when you arrive. Very thoughtful. There is also a manager on duty at the main desk during the day that can answer your questions and lend a hand. She even has post card stamps and change for the laundry! Hope this info helps you decide the best place to stay! Mahalo!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway.

My parents wrote the previous review in 2011 and they have chosen to return to David and Sandy's condo, unit 410 again this year. This may be the last visit for them to Hawaii due to health reasons but knowing that David and his wife Sandy are there and looking in on them has given me peace of mind with them so far from home. They knew Dad and Mom were arriving in the dark and made sure that there was a light on for them and made sure to let them know again that their unit provides free long distance phone calls to Canada. Before they left they were wondering what was going to be new in the condo since each year there has been at least one improvement, not that anything is really needed. Just knowing that Sandy and David are there and my parents know two people they can contact if necessary certainly helps me and I am truly grateful for their assistance and compassion. I know that when I am able to go to Kona I will be staying in their unit, #410. I have told some of my friends about the wonderful condo that David and Sandy have and their customer service and if anyone ever asks they are at the VERY TOP of my list of places to stay. A BIG THANK YOU!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+.

My wife and I have been to this condo 9 times in the last 9 years. After our first stay, which we enjoyed so much, we have returned again and again and have never been disappointed. We noticed that each time something have been updated, like new counter tops. The many little goodies that are left for us are always appreciated! Another great feature is that it is close enough to downtown, that we are able to walk to restaurants and other stores. A lot of time is spent on the lanai, watching the eels and turtles in the water below, as well as the boats cruising past. We are looking forward to our return trip next April for another enjoyable stay. The Richardson's P.S. My parents are elderly I have been so impressed with the assistance that has been given to my parents, I know that my parents are well looked after and that is a true blessing. Thank you so very much for your wonderful condo and what you do in Paradise!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Sandy and I consider it a privilege to host such appreciative return guests like Ted and Florence. We will look forward to their 10th visit next year. A large percentage of our guests return year after year. Also, we have noticed a growing number of Canadian guests in recent years.

This was our 1st visit to the Big Island. My husband and I and our 2 adult boys stayed at VRBO #5784. It was awesome. Plenty of room for 4 adults. Tastefully decorated and very homey. Amenities were fabulous. (toilet paper, laundry soap, a 'goodie' welcome bag, spices, condiments, plastic bags.....on and on. Everything you might need. We have stayed in other condos that came with nothing. This was great. Wonderful view and an excellent location. Easy walk to town. The owners clearly take pride in their condo and are very welcoming and accomodating. Recommend it to anyone.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, people with disabilities, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We spent a week here in January 2011. It was perfect! The owners keeps everything you need supplied in the condo. We watched the sunset from the balcony almost every day. You can watch spinning dolphins, whales breaching and a lot of local surfers. The condo was very clean and comfortable for 2 people. We loved being ocean front with nothing between us and the ocean. Sometimes the waves crashing on the lava was a little too loud, but there are double pane windows and they blocked a lot of the noise (we were there during a storm in the N. Pacific which caused a large surf). We would go back there in a heartbeat.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Why the Owner Chose Hale Kona Kai:
Sandy and I stayed in the Hale Kona Kai about 34 years ago on our first visit to Kona. When we moved to Kona in 1979 we lived in Hale Kona Kai for a few weeks while building our first home in Kona. We had a special place in our heart for the Hale Kona Kai. So when we had the opportunity to purchase #410 on the top floor about 10 years ago, we grabbed it! As the broker-owner of Property Marketing of Hawaii, I have been in just about every condo in Kona. NO OCEANFRONT 1 BEDROOM CONDOS COMPARE TO THE HALE KONA KAI. Sandy and I live 8 minutes away from our beautiful #410. We take great pleasure in hosting many happy vacationers in our condo. A large percentage of our guests have stayed multiple times in #410.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
#410 is on the top floor. Let no one fool you, no lower floor has the awesome oceanfront view of a top floor condo. Additionally, the top floor is the most private and less noisy. Every inch of the inside of #410 is brand new. We have one of the few walk in tiled showers. The majority of units still have the old cast iron tub.
