The BLUE SHUTTER COTTAGE is in the residential community of Bear Paw, a private, 24-hour gated resort community. Bear Paw is the only community located on HIWASSEE LAKE with a full-service MARINA. The lake is almost completely surrounded by protected PUBLIC LAND... with great boating, fishing & hiking opportunities.
The Blue Shutter Cottage is a cozy one bedroom, one bath cottage. It's just two cottages away from the pool... yet it is tucked back against the mountain to insure privacy. Even though it's a charming early 20th century structure that was part of the original Hiwassee Dam village, it's been completed modernized with all the 21st century conveniences. We've tried to anticipate your every vacation need.
The LIVING/DINING ROOM ... has a sleeper sofa, Flat Screen TV with ample satellite service and a DVD player, along with a dining table and chairs.
The KITCHEN ... has everything you need to prepare that special country meal, including a refrigerator, stove & oven, crock pot, microwave, DISHWASHER, coffee maker, kitchen utensils, dishes, and pots & pans. A washer & dryer are also provided for your convenience.
The large BEDROOM... has a KING SIZE BED... high-end linens, pillows, dresser and a spacious closet. The BATHROOM... includes a hair dryer & fluffy towels.
The SCREENED PORCH has rocking chairs to enjoy your morning coffee, and the open DECK has a large gas grill, along with a table and chairs to enjoy your meals and a view of the wooded hillside.
There is lots of room for parking, so bring your boat or rent one from the marina.

Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2009
Philip & I first rented Blue Shutter Cottage as newlyweds in 2006. He had visited Bear Paw with his family as a child and I surprised him with a weekend getaway there! His mother lived at Bear Paw until she was in the 7th grade, as her father worked for TVA helping to build Hiwassee Dam. The village at Bear Paw was originally constructed as housing for the workers and their families because the area was not really settled back in the 1930s.
Philip is a Clay County, NC native, born and raised on a small working farm. I'm originally from Nashville, Tennessee. We both are employed by nonprofit conservation organizations that, in different ways, work to preserve quality of life for mountain residents. We are also avid hikers and general outdoor enthusiasts and would be happy to help point you toward trails in the area suited to your taste and ability!
Why the Owner Chose Lake Hiwassee
We bought Blue Shutter because of the proximity to lake (it's only 0.6 miles to Mountain View Marina), the availability of trails and outdoor activities nearby in both Cherokee (TN) and Nantahala (NC) National Forests, and the amenities at Bear Paw. It feels remote, but it's also a little community. We also like the historical aspect of it being the original Hiwassee Dam workers' village. Our cottage has been completely modernized, but it's still the charming original structure.
The Unique Benefits of this Vacation Home
There is the wonderful new Olympic-sized pool in easy walking distance, clubhouse with free wireless internet access, tennis courts, basketball goals, and a playground for younger children. The cottage is within easy driving distance of Murphy, NC, Blue Ridge, GA, and Copper Hill and Tellico Plains, TN. It's a great getaway spot in an area that is largely overlooked as a vacation destination!
