Waterfront Cottage - Scenic River Off Chesapeake Bay
- Minimum stay:7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
1930s style cottage at water's edge, a leisurely sail up the scenic Magothy River just far enough off the bay to be in calm protected water. We are located on a secluded point in a small bay of the river behind a tall iron gate and a high native stone wall. The compound has over 900 ft on the river and has an interesting history. The cottage has just been completely renovated, new everything, but retains its quaint charm. Another slightly smaller 2br/1bth cottage is also available here at the same estate.
Youll have your own private deep-water pier, just 15 feet from your riverfront porch, with 30 amp marine electric service and water. We provide a motor pontoon boat, seats 6-8, for you to explore this big river and its miles of creeks. It's a 15 min cruise down to a typical waterfront crabshack; dock up and enjoy our famous Maryland bluecrabs. Or join us (no charge) on our 41 ketch for a sail on the river or the bay. A Hunter 31' sloop on the pier is available for bareboat charter.
Our home is here in the same compound, but secluded and out of your way. We're always available if you need anything. We make every effort to see you are comfortable and have a great vacation.
By car, Annapolis, with its Naval Academy, museums, historic waterfront, shops, and world-class restaurants is just 10-15 minutes away. BWI Airport is 20 minutes on fast expressway, Baltimore historic waterfront and major league sports are 20 minutes, and Washington, D.C. Capitol Hill is under an hour.
We hope to see you!

My husband and I stayed in the smaller of the 2 waterfront cottages. 2 small bedrooms, and 1 bath in the 2nd bedroom. Adorable kitchen and living room. I loved the screened in front porch. Beautiful new gas grill with a pretty table to eat outside by. We loved it. Everything we needed. Owner was very nice and very helpful. (we arrived on the day of that major storm and power outage) He provided us with a generator that promptly worked the fridge and a/c for us. Power came back on the next day. We were grateful for that! The property is beautiful! You are directly on the water with wonderful views. It was nice to be close to the historical sites, and still return to our "home-base" of quietness on the river. Picture postcard pretty....I promise!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I rented this cottage in Sept 2008 for 2 weeks, my Mom and her best friend came down for a long weekend while I was there. The following August my Mom passed away unexpectedly, my Mom's best friend and I still talk about that trip and how wonderful and relaxing it was. I just wanted to thank you for the wondeful memories that your property provided for us, it has allowed the both of us to heal.Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing.

Comfy little cottage that sits on a quiet nook and cranny of the Magothy River. Hot a couple days, but the air conditioner was working well. We enjoyed bike rides on the rails-to-trails nearby, swimming in the river off the pontoon boat available for use, and quiet kayak paddles in the morning. Lots of places to explore, and plenty of convenient shopping if that's your thing (Rt 1 a mile away). This place has all the dishes and conveniences of home, with a nice fireplace and view of the river to boot. There is wireless internet and a gated entry; nothing feels like being the lord of your domain than closing a 12 ft high wrought iron gate! Check it out, enjoy the water and the peace. Bring binocs to watch the herons in the morning, the boats by day and have a drink or two at night.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

My husband and I were looking for a nice, quiet, peaceful place to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary. Boy, did we hit the jackpot! We stayed in the 2 bedroom, 2 bath cottage at Bird Haven. The beauty and serenity were more than we ever expected. The cottage was clean and very comfortable, with great water views at every turn. Chuck, the owner, made us feel right at home and was most attentive to our needs. On a scale of 1 to 10, we gave this place a 20! As a matter of fact, we booked our next stay before we left for home.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We had a wonderful time relaxing on the water. The accomodations were just as described, very comfortable and spacious. The kids loved kayaking and crabbing and Chuck made sure they had everything they needed to have an awesome time. He went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Smokey was a highlight too, what a great dog. Close to Annapolis, Washington and Baltimore, you will never run out of things to do, whether you are on the go or just relaxing. Close to resturants too. Perfect getaway.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Chuck is an excellent host. What a find, we'll definitely be going back. Very conveniently located, central but private. Catch all the crabs you can eat right off the private dock or watch the boats go by as the sun goes down.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

What a beautiful property Bird Haven is. Amenities were exactly as they appear in the photos but what you can't capture is the panoramic view of the river from the sunporch of the cottage. It was a perfect spot for morning coffee. The location is also ideal, close to Annapolis with easy access to Baltimore. Chuck is just as nice as he can be. Made us feel more like extended family rather than guests. And the history of the compound is fascinating. We'll be heading back to the Eastern Shore in the Fall and will definitely try to book the cottage again.Really enjoyed our stay.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We found everything about this rental as advertised, we were even contacted by a previous guest with a comprehensive report about his stay at Bird Haven. This is the place to be if you want a relaxing vacation near the water with the added benefit of a most delightful and congenial host. We were met on arrival and, though rather late in the evening, our host, Chuck, insisted we relax after our flight while he went off to the supermarket to buy us some provisions for breakfast. Throughout our stay Chuck was always at hand with helpful advice on local amenities, he soon had us feeling very much at home. The use of the pontoon boat was a real bonus and we were soon scooting about the river like veteran sailors, he even arranged a day out on his 41 ft ketch. I cannot leave out Smokey, Chuck's lovely golden retriever (rather more chestnut than golden). Any children will be as enchanted by Smokey as we were, he's a really smart dog. I would very much like to return to Bird Haven for another" therapeutic" holiday, I know that there will be no shortage of volunteers from my family to accompany me!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children.

We had a great time staying with Chuck and Smokey! Our family of four stayed in the small, 2 bedroom cottage and it was perfect for us. We really enjoyed the hospitality from Chuck. The cottage has everything you need, and if it doesn't you can probably borrow it from Chuck. He was always very helpful and there to accommodate whatever we needed. The kids really enjoyed playing with Smokey and I think Smokey enjoyed it too! The view from the house is amazing, looking out over the water. The best part about our trip was the boats! It's not every day that you meet someone who trusts you to take off in their boat. My husband was so happy to be sailing again. When you visit, make sure you go to the Naval Academy Museum. It is close by and has so much history and great things to see. We also drove into DC three times and the drive isn't bad at all. This is the perfect place to stay if you plan to visit DC because you can unwind and relax on the water after running around in the hustle and bustle of the city. We highly recommend this property where you can relax, have a good time, and have your every need met. We will definitely be back to visit again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Wow, who could top Tom's review! And it is all true. I spent 10 days in November in the large cottage recovering from an incredibly intense year at work. I had intended to sleep late very day. That didn't work out. Instead I woke most days at the same time that it started getting light, in November that is about 7:00am. I was glad that happened. Every day, it was so quiet and still - just what I needed. Each morning between 8:30 and 9am, a heron flies onto the property. In the one day of pouring rain, he perched on a post on the dock for several hours. Another day, he strutted from the dock to the boat slip and stood in the shallow water fishing. Luckily Smokey was otherwise occupied. Watching boaters, water color-painting the river front, and just letting my mind wander was exactly what was needed. For those who prefer a more active vacation, the proximity of Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington, DC provides more than you could accomplish in a week. Pace yourself and recover in this wonderful cottage. I have rented vacation properties all over the world. This one is worth returning to.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
