Location: Bellaire, Northwest, Michigan, USA (On Beautiful Six Mile Lake, largest in Upper Chain O' Lakes)

Accommodations:  Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Keywords:  Log Cabin

Just reaching the cabin is a delight in itself. People say you can tell when you enter Antrim County because the road begins to dip and rise like a gentle roller coaster. Patchwork farms perch on rolling hills; heritage cobblestone houses and weathered barns dot the landscape. Stands of maple woods bracket fields of corn and grain. And then there are the lakes. Glacially carved and tucked into the folded hills, around any sweeping curve you may come upon one.

Our cabin sits on such a lake. On a private gravel lane, away from occasional traffic, a stand of cedar and hemlock shelter it. A landmark on the left as you turn into the driveway is one of those old historic Michigan barns, which are fast disappearing from the landscape.

The cabin was built in 2002, on 111 feet on the southeast shore of Six Mile Lake, the headwaters of the Chain O' Lakes where, in a canoe or kayak, you can paddle over sixty miles to Grand Traverse Bay and into Lake Michigan. In the summer the cabin's dock stretches thirty-one feet out into the lake, and chunky bass pausing in the thick reeds and cattails along the shore will streak after your casted lure. Other residents include herons, gulls, bald eagles, loons, turtles, pileated woodpeckers, swans, squirrels, whitetail deer, wild turkeys, mink, and ducks, . . . lots of ducks!

We also have two kayaks available for our guests. They are the solo, sit-in, Otter model, made by Old Town. Sunrise (yellow/orange) in color, they are the perfect way to enjoy a quiet glide among the reeds to spy on that long-legged Great Blue Heron; or a quick sprint across the lake for a little cardio exercise. A two-seater paddleboat is also on hand for some good splashing around, or launch your own boat a mile or so up the lake at a public launch or at Echo Township Park across the lake, with a boat launch and sandy bottom shoreline for swimming.

And location, location, location! Ten minutes to the west is Central Lake with a grocery store, gourmet pizza at Classic Pizza, and local fine art at Adams' Madams (short list). Ten minutes to the north is Ellsworth, with five star dining at The Rowe Inn. Twenty minutes to the south is Bellaire, with unique shops, Lulu’s Bistro for a gourmet meal or Shorts for a microbrew, created onsite. Twenty-five minutes to the southwest is Elk Rapids for amazing antiquing. Twenty minutes to the north is Charlevoix, on Lake Michigan, with more shopping, restaurants and seasonal activities. Fifteen minutes to the east is East Jordan, and the Jordan River Wilderness Area. The Jordan River is among Michigan's cleanest and coldest rivers and was the first river in the state to be federally designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. Not surprisingly, it has some of the best fly-fishing for trout to be found anywhere.

It is an enchanting area, and, as yet, mostly undiscovered. Don’t wait, word will get out. Get here as soon as you can!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

We love nature and the outdoors and spend as much time as we can hiking, bicycling, kayaking, bird-watching, etc. We are runners, vegetarians, wildlife enthusiasts and we appreciate the awesome natural beauty and recreational opportunities of this area.

Why the Owner Chose Bellaire

We were drawn to the Chain O' Lakes area because of all the lakes and places to kayak. There's an international airport an hour away in Traverse City, yet the area is not a major tourist destination (a good thing!). Visitors tend to be families returning to the area to share with their children the experiences they themselves had when they were young. It feels remote here, yet there are great restaurants nearby, with many festivals in the local small towns year round. There is fly-fishing on the AuSauble, Jordan and Manistee rivers and numerous locations for world class golf.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Watching a pileated woodpecker ratchet around a juniper tree. Listening to the clumsy juvenile wild turkeys jumping and flapping up into the cedar trees next to the cabin to roost for the night. Observing a snapping turtle lay her eggs in the sandy area between the cabin and the lake. Finding Petoskey stones while walking along a wooded gravel road near the cabin. Seeing the resident pair of white swans glide under the dock. Having a bald eagle land in the top of a cedar tree in front of the cabin and stare down at you. Looking down into the water at the end of the dock to watch a small school of baby pike. Ducks doing ducky things. A loon in the middle of the lake one rainy evening. Catching the tom turkey pop and spread his tail feathers for the hen turkeys (they weren't too interested!). Whitetail deer, usually their backsides with tails waving high. I could go on, but I think you get the idea! :) You are day-trip distance from Mackinaw Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes, with many county and state parks nearby.

(from Guestbook) We loved the fall "cabin experience"! We enjoyed the paddleboat and the dock. We paddled the paddleboat across the lake to the park and playground. I loved experiencing all the attention to detail in your decor - the furniture, the lamps, and the matching wildlife dinnerware and switchplates! I read up in the loft on the wicker loveseat in sheer peace! I also enjoyed going to an Estate Sale on the lake. Thank you so much for sharing this very special place!

(from Guestbook) We had sooo much fun at the cabin and lake. We went kayaking, went on the paddleboat and went on our jetski. We caught some fishes, and turtles!!! We saw swans and turkeys, too. We also went to Lake Michigan and relaxed there - it was sooo fun! We made bonfires at night and just relaxed this whole trip. Thanks for letting us stay!

(from Guestbook) We had fun on the paddle boat and I had my early birthday. I am 6, but in September I will be 7. The cabin is buetifull! TIP-best fishing is down by the rafts. (Mom) This place is in a great location to do a lot of fun things. We all had a good time!

(from Guestbook) We had a wonderful time at the cabin! We went fishing and caught a fish on the paddleboat out front. We also caught fish at the family trout pond not too far from here. They made a great lunch! We also kayaked the Jordan River - beautiful and quiet! We recommend Murray's in East Jordan and Sodalicious for ice cream!! We also swan in Lake Michigan and collected rocks - a wonderful week! We saw a bald eagle on the last day, fly across the dock!!

Great Week - Great Cabin

Guest: KayVen (Portage, MI)
Date of Stay: 09/04/10 Review Submitted: 09/22/10

We had a great family gathering - our boys rented a fishing boat and fished every day - we loved the a-frame with great light and views of the lake and especially liked the amount of trees on both sides of the cabin that really gave us that in-the-woods feel. The property was accurately described, clean and well-maintained. The weather didn't cooperate but that didn't keep us from having a great time. We tripped off to Short's in Bellaire for their famous brews and had a shopping trip to Charlevoix. Our best weather day had us using the kayaks and paddleboat and the local eagle flew over to top things off. Great time was had by all and our little grandsons had their first 'taste' of lake-life and 'up north'. Our 2 1/2 year-old even learned to say ''vacation rental" !!

Our Vacation Trip

Guest: Linda (Bowling Green Ohio)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 09/20/10

We were once again lucky to find a beautifully appointed cabin on The Chain of Lakes! The cabin was very comfortable and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay in Northern Michigan. It was a peaceful setting full of the Northern Michigan feel you want when vacationing in the North Country of Michigan. The owners and caretaker of the property were great people and we want them to know we appreciated their help and opening their home to us. We would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting a relaxing vacation - you won't regret this one!!! Jim and Linda Bowling Green Ohio

The cottage was everything advertised and more; clean, modern and well appointed. Enjoyed the local golf, day-trips to the many NW MI towns and just relaxing on the deck. Spectacular sunsets, more stars than I can ever remember and a couple of visits from the Bald Eagles and the lake's resident swan. Made a couple trips to Shorts Brewpub in Bellaire as well as Whitney's in Charlevoix.
