Hale Hoaloha means home of good friends and you will immediately feel at home in this perfectly located family friendly three bedroom condominium. Puako is a tiny former fishing village located 30 miles from the hustle and bustle of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii's 'gold coast'. This is a quiet family area and our condo is perfect for kids of all ages. There's a larger adult pool and a 14' deep pool for the little ones. The sand beach across the street slopes out very gently and is protected from the waves by a reef. Within a few miles you'll find easily accessible spectacular white sand beaches at Hapuna, Mauna Kea, Maumae, Spencer, Waikoloa, and Wailea Bay. They offer every kind of water and beach recreation your family can imagine: swimming, snorkeling, body surfing, body boarding, board surfing, diving, sand castle building, snoozing (in the sun or the shade), whale watching, picnicing, and general all around family fun.
This gorgeous little village gets more sun and less rain (only 8-11 inches per year, on average) than any place else in the state. Despite the sun, the trade winds blow delightfully in one side of the building and out the other, keeping it comfortable in virtually all weather. Turn on the ceiling fans in each room to add to the breeze, walk out through your master bedroom onto the private lanai and sip your tropical drink while enjoying the sound of the ocean, only 200' away. Choose the optional air conditioning if that is your preference.
Interested? Walk over to the semi-private beach (we've never seen more than 10 people on it at the same time) and look for the Honu (green sea turtles) that live there. Note how well protected it is for children's swimming, and plan on returning for one of the world class sunsets. If you have brought the snorkel gear we provide, walk into the reef protected lagoon and look for the many varieties of fish resident there or even the occasional eagle ray. If you are a diver, note the easy access to the ocean and one of the best coral reefs in the state.
On the way back to the condo, stop at the remarkably well stocked general store next door for anything from a fine wine to a rental DVD to virtually any groceries to conversation or advice on what to do or where to go for your favorite activity. You might also want to explore the carefully cared for grounds. Help yourself to whatever fruit is in season (mangos, papaya, bananas, oranges, limes, and grapefruit)and smell the bougainvillia, ginger, perriwinkle, jasmine, plumeria, hibiscus, and birds of paradise.
Tuck a fragrant plumeria behind your ear and check out the immaculate pools. Pop your groceries in the super-sized refrigerator-freezer and updated cabinets and check out the rest of the condo. Notice that the twin beds can be converted into a king. Also note that the full sized closet in the same room holds a collection of beach gear from fins, masks, and snorkels to toys for those who would rather build sand castles. In the linen closet find a shelf full of books devoted to everything from hiking to Hawaiiana.
Poking your head into the queen bed room you'll find a completely equipped office area, with phone/fax, printer, and a desk full of supplies. Of course high speed internet is available via our wireless router. Note that the flat screen LCD TV comes equipped with a DVD player. In the living room, though, there is both a DVD player and a VHS recorder as well as a CD player. The master bedroom boasts a king-sized bed, private lanai, over sized closet, ceiling fan, and a 40' LCD flat screen TV complete with DVD and VCR players.
You'll be happy to find that the kitchen comes equipped with everything you'll need from a dishwasher to a coffee grinder for that local Kona coffee to a blender for the smoothies you'll make from the fruit you just picked to the basic spices and cooking supplies. Want to share an intimate evening together? Run down to the oceanside fish market 6 miles away and grill some mahi mahi so fresh it was swimming in the morning.
Don't feel like cooking tonight? No worries. There are about 40 restaurants within 15 miles from modest to very fancy. American, fusion, sushi, seafood, Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Italian nearby and even more in Kona. Stop, take a deep breath, and think..... This is truly paradise.

Puako is one of my favorite places on the Big Island and Hale Hoaloha is a great place to stay while enjoying the island. It is just as described, comfortable, beautifully maintained, well equipped, quiet, uncrowded, yet accessible to all that you want in Hawaii. The owners are extremely knowledgeable about the property and the island. I have stayed here several times and look forward to returning.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+.
Owner response: Also wonderful for families. The beach across the street is protected from surf by a reef, has some shade, shallow water for little waders, honu [green sea turtles, fish for snorkelers, and the bottom slopes out very gradually.

One definition of Paradise could easily be a place with the Pacific Ocean across the street. This place goes one better. The beach varies. To the right are shade trees right at the edge of the beach. To the left, it's wide open sand and a wide open view of the tropical sunset. Straight ahead is Maui peeking out of the clouds. Back across the quiet street is the free lending library on the veranda of the General Store. A great place to sit at a table and enjoy the tradewinds breezing by. For a relaxed, Hawaiian interlude, it's all right here. My time here was as I imagined a Hawaiian vacation used to be back in the day. I'm amazed that it is still available. I really enjoyed all the too short time.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+.
