Hana is commonly known as the “Last Hawaiian Place.” Step back into the charm and casual elegance of old Hawai’i in an authentic, meticulously renovated plantation owners home in Hana. Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this 1930’s home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2005 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. We have designed an open and airy layout with spectacular ocean and pastoral views from every room. Your eyes will delight on the beautiful Brazilian Mahogany (Merbau) floors, elegantly detailed, vintage style bath with dual-sided claw foot tub (great for romantic baths for two), granite kitchen counters with reclaimed Koa wood bar/counter and trim accents. A sliding panel of framed Tapa cloth between the bedroom and living area allows you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house. The furnishings are classic and comfortable with a Missionary antique and Asian influence. We have designed the cottage with warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. Though the house has a tasteful and elegant décor, you can still put your feet on the furniture and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You will arrive to rooms filled with brilliant tropical floral arrangements and/or orchid plants, 100% cotton, high thread count, quality linens and towels and handmade soaps as well as coffee and green tea to start off your first day with us – fine details on par with the finest luxury hotel at a fraction of comprable prices (really). Hale Ulu Lulu is part of a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by gracious lawns and verdant tropical gardens and foliage. We live on the property and constantly maintain our homes. They are meticulously cared for and we run our business like any fine hotel (sorry, no room service!). Though we usually greet you upon arrival and answer any questions, we leave you completely alone to enjoy your stay.
The Guest Houses at Malanai are named after the gentle cooling breeze , (named Malanai) known for this area of Hana. We are located just three miles outside of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. Walk 15 minutes to the world famous Hamoa beach (or a 2 minute drive) or 12 minutes in the other direction to the Venus pool- two of Hana’s most desired attractions – practically in our back yard!

It was my 3rd visit to Hana but my (new) husband's first.....Hana never disappoints, and neither does this property! The pictures & description are totally accurate, no point in repeating what has already been said. Chris and Leokane and their canine cohorts were great hosts, but never intrusive. After a week, it was time to move on; we will carry with us the true "aloha spirit" which this property & its owners share in great abundance. Don't stay just a night or two......let Hana seep into your psyche and your bones....Mahaho & Aloha....Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My husband and I spent our anniversary in this beautiful rebuilt plantation home. I loved everything about it! It's very clean and beautifully decorated with many traditional Hawaiian touches. The owners thought of everything you might need to enjoy your stay. The beach nearby is amazing, we went every day to swim and enjoy the raw beauty. We also went hiking to the seven sacred pools, waterfall and bamboo forest. This rental felt very private and the owners were sensitive to our privacy, but close at hand if we needed anything. We dream of returning there to bask in the peacefulness of Hana and the beauty of this lovely rental.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We enjoyed our stay at Hale Ulu Lulu. In our past trips to Hana we just did a quick ride-through just like most people do. During the three days we spent there we found Charles Lindbergs gravesite at Palapala Ho'omau Church-just past mile marker 41 down a little road to the left. Also Wai'anapanapa State Park has the most beautiful black sand beach. Also a must to see is Oheo Gulch in Haleakala National Park-Kepahulu area. Wonderful trails and also the bamboo forest was fantastic. The only drawback for us was Hana Ranch Restaurant did not have any great reviews so we bought groceries before heading to Hana and we cooked. We did eat there one night and the reviews were correct. I'm not much of a cook and enjoy going out to eat but staying at Hale Ulu Lulu and taking our time visiting the area was worth it. Would stay again.Did you find this review helpful? My husband and I spend two wonderful nights of our honeymoon at the beautiful Hale Ulu Lulu. We were blown away by the cottage. It is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. Chris and Leokane have thought of every amenity you could ever need. We loved the peace, quiet and simplicity that Hana had to offer us. The Hana Fresh Farmers market is a must! Hamoa Beach is amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the sun here. We also had a beautiful dinner at the Hotel Hana-Maui, just a short drive away and had the opportunity to listen to Leokane's music and dance! We very much the scenic drive to and time in Hana!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

The Ideal Vacation...location....and hosts. Very tasteful Hawaiian luxury. Because of Hana's remoteness the beach/ocean is often to just yourself.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

I simply cannot stop gushing about our five days in Hana at Hale Ulu Lulu. The house is really lovely and close to beautiful Hamoa Beach where we spent the majority of our days. We spent our evenings sitting in the comfy lawn chairs looking at the millions of stars. The kitchen is very well-equipped, everything you could possibly need is there. The house has a washer and dryer, and all the beach toys you need. Love the claw foot tub. We simply had a wonderful time in Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu was the reason for that. This location is perfect if you're looking for a quiet get-away worlds away from resorts. We highly recommend the Hale Ulu Lulu for a great break from reality. I think all the previous guests' comments sum up our visit. Hale Ulu Lulu is a lovely, tasteful guest house thoughtfully furnished with every amenity we needed. The surrounding area and view are some of the most beautiful we've seen in any of our (fairly extensive) travels. We loved the Hana Fresh farmer's market located in front of Hana Health Center and bought fresh fish and produce there.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I stayed in Hana at the Hale Ulu Lulu for two nights of our Maui honeymoon in November and looking back I wished we had stayed there for our entire trip. The guesthouse was absolutely perfect! The website represents the house and the grounds perfectly but falls short in its ability to convey what wonderful hosts Chris and Leokane are. We arrived to the house that was thoughtfully prepared for our stay with gorgeous and fragrant flowers throughout the immaculate cottage. Our hosts were so accommodating and they supply their guests with a written tour complete with helpful tips and advice for your stay in Hana. The house was also equipped with everything that one would need including snorkel gear and boogie boards that I highly recommend making use of at one of the nearby beaches. My husband and I also enjoyed cooking in the well-appointed kitchen, relaxing with a glass of wine while the sunset and listening the house’s music collection (we particularly enjoyed the proprietor’s own CD), and napping in the lounge chairs in the front yard while the breeze carried the scent of the flowers that surround the house. When we did finally leave our sanctuary we discovered that the town of Hana and its people are a treasure and this wonderful house is a perfect gem situated nicely among all of the town’s offerings. We were a short drive or walk from the beaches and stones throw away from a naturally formed pool that is one of the most amazing places I have ever been. We enjoyed sunbathing on the rocks and swimming in the fresh water amongst the beautiful fish that shared the pool with us, all while watching the ocean surf crash in towards the pool. Another wonderful surprise that came with our stay in Hana was the joy of watching an endangered Monk seal and her new baby frolic on Koki Beach (you can watch video of the seals on YouTube by searching for "Koki Monk Seals"). This rare event gave us the opportunity to meet and chat with some of the town’s people who were at the beach holding constant vigil over the their adopted seal and her pup. My husband and I were so fortunate to get to know the people of Hana and we realize that they help preserve this beautiful paradise from becoming a just another “tourist trap” and their generous hearts are part of the magic of Hana. Needless to say, our trip to Hana made an indelible impression upon us and we plan to return often. I look forward to enjoying the hospitality of Chris and LeokaneDid you find this review helpful? We loved our 3 nights in paradise. The beautifully decorated house is perfectly situated just outside Hana. With a five minute drive, you are at Hamoa beach. Every morning, you can watch a gorgeous sunrise over the coast and over the ocean, from the comfort of your home away from home. We found Hale Ulu Lulu to be a wonderfully relaxing place.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: Leokane Pryor has long family history in Hana. He is a relative of the colorful Sam Pryor, who was not only responsible for bringing Charles Lindbergh to Kipahulu (just down the road), but was also well known locally for raising Gibbon apes and many other animals which he loved. Charles, Sam, his wife Mary Tay and many of the Gibbons are buried at the famous church in Kipahulu. Leokane has followed in the family tradition by creating his own unique history in the area. He can be heard performing Hawaiian music most Thursdays and Sundays at the local bar and he is well known throughout the island for his smooth falsetto melodies...
Why the Owner Chose Hana:
Leokane and Chris purchased this property in 2001 and have worked continuously to create a paradise for themselves, their family and friends. Two of the homes on the large property are available for rent, making this unique experience available to the public. As one of only three legally permitted vacation rental properties in the area, The Guest Houses at Malanai are often booked months in advance and well deserving of their consistent top rating and stellar reviews.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The Guest Houses at Malanai are located in the Makaalae area of Hana, about 3 miles past Hana Town. This area is generally considered the most desirable of Hana due to its proximity to world famous Hamoa Beach, as well as the gentle breezes and open landscape which keep it cooler and more comfortable than other locations in the area. Makaalae was once the fishing village of the area and boasts some of the most breathtaking coastline of all Maui. During whale season, it is the perfect place to see their migration and sometimes even hear them playing at night.
