Elegant, yes, but most comfortable & cozy!

It was my 3rd visit to Hana but my (new) husband's first.....Hana never disappoints, and neither does this property! The pictures & description are totally accurate, no point in repeating what has already been said. Chris and Leokane and their canine cohorts were great hosts, but never intrusive. After a week, it was time to move on; we will carry with us the true "aloha spirit" which this property & its owners share in great abundance. Don't stay just a night or two......let Hana seep into your psyche and your bones....Mahaho & Aloha....

My husband and I spent our anniversary in this beautiful rebuilt plantation home. I loved everything about it! It's very clean and beautifully decorated with many traditional Hawaiian touches. The owners thought of everything you might need to enjoy your stay. The beach nearby is amazing, we went every day to swim and enjoy the raw beauty. We also went hiking to the seven sacred pools, waterfall and bamboo forest. This rental felt very private and the owners were sensitive to our privacy, but close at hand if we needed anything. We dream of returning there to bask in the peacefulness of Hana and the beauty of this lovely rental.

We enjoyed our stay at Hale Ulu Lulu. In our past trips to Hana we just did a quick ride-through just like most people do. During the three days we spent there we found Charles Lindbergs gravesite at Palapala Ho'omau Church-just past mile marker 41 down a little road to the left. Also Wai'anapanapa State Park has the most beautiful black sand beach. Also a must to see is Oheo Gulch in Haleakala National Park-Kepahulu area. Wonderful trails and also the bamboo forest was fantastic. The only drawback for us was Hana Ranch Restaurant did not have any great reviews so we bought groceries before heading to Hana and we cooked. We did eat there one night and the reviews were correct. I'm not much of a cook and enjoy going out to eat but staying at Hale Ulu Lulu and taking our time visiting the area was worth it. Would stay again.

My husband and I spend two wonderful nights of our honeymoon at the beautiful Hale Ulu Lulu. We were blown away by the cottage. It is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. Chris and Leokane have thought of every amenity you could ever need. We loved the peace, quiet and simplicity that Hana had to offer us. The Hana Fresh Farmers market is a must! Hamoa Beach is amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the sun here. We also had a beautiful dinner at the Hotel Hana-Maui, just a short drive away and had the opportunity to listen to Leokane's music and dance! We very much the scenic drive to and time in Hana!

The Ideal Vacation...location....and hosts. Very tasteful Hawaiian luxury. Because of Hana's remoteness the beach/ocean is often to just yourself.

I simply cannot stop gushing about our five days in Hana at Hale Ulu Lulu. The house is really lovely and close to beautiful Hamoa Beach where we spent the majority of our days. We spent our evenings sitting in the comfy lawn chairs looking at the millions of stars. The kitchen is very well-equipped, everything you could possibly need is there. The house has a washer and dryer, and all the beach toys you need. Love the claw foot tub. We simply had a wonderful time in Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu was the reason for that. This location is perfect if you're looking for a quiet get-away worlds away from resorts. We highly recommend the Hale Ulu Lulu for a great break from reality. Jacqueline & John, Maple Ridge, BC

I think all the previous guests' comments sum up our visit. Hale Ulu Lulu is a lovely, tasteful guest house thoughtfully furnished with every amenity we needed. The surrounding area and view are some of the most beautiful we've seen in any of our (fairly extensive) travels. We loved the Hana Fresh farmer's market located in front of Hana Health Center and bought fresh fish and produce there.

My husband and I stayed in Hana at the Hale Ulu Lulu for two nights of our Maui honeymoon in November and looking back I wished we had stayed there for our entire trip. The guesthouse was absolutely perfect! The website represents the house and the grounds perfectly but falls short in its ability to convey what wonderful hosts Chris and Leokane are. We arrived to the house that was thoughtfully prepared for our stay with gorgeous and fragrant flowers throughout the immaculate cottage. Our hosts were so accommodating and they supply their guests with a written tour complete with helpful tips and advice for your stay in Hana. The house was also equipped with everything that one would need including snorkel gear and boogie boards that I highly recommend making use of at one of the nearby beaches. My husband and I also enjoyed cooking in the well-appointed kitchen, relaxing with a glass of wine while the sunset and listening the house’s music collection (we particularly enjoyed the proprietor’s own CD), and napping in the lounge chairs in the front yard while the breeze carried the scent of the flowers that surround the house. When we did finally leave our sanctuary we discovered that the town of Hana and its people are a treasure and this wonderful house is a perfect gem situated nicely among all of the town’s offerings. We were a short drive or walk from the beaches and stones throw away from a naturally formed pool that is one of the most amazing places I have ever been. We enjoyed sunbathing on the rocks and swimming in the fresh water amongst the beautiful fish that shared the pool with us, all while watching the ocean surf crash in towards the pool. Another wonderful surprise that came with our stay in Hana was the joy of watching an endangered Monk seal and her new baby frolic on Koki Beach (you can watch video of the seals on YouTube by searching for "Koki Monk Seals"). This rare event gave us the opportunity to meet and chat with some of the town’s people who were at the beach holding constant vigil over the their adopted seal and her pup. My husband and I were so fortunate to get to know the people of Hana and we realize that they help preserve this beautiful paradise from becoming a just another “tourist trap” and their generous hearts are part of the magic of Hana. Needless to say, our trip to Hana made an indelible impression upon us and we plan to return often. I look forward to enjoying the hospitality of Chris and Leokane

We loved our 3 nights in paradise. The beautifully decorated house is perfectly situated just outside Hana. With a five minute drive, you are at Hamoa beach. Every morning, you can watch a gorgeous sunrise over the coast and over the ocean, from the comfort of your home away from home. We found Hale Ulu Lulu to be a wonderfully relaxing place.

The house is quite lovely and well equipped with everything we needed. Hana is very quiet. Contrary to other reviews I have read, we had a pleasant dining experience at the Hana Hotel for our anniversary dinner. Our entire Hana experience was very nice. I would recommend Hale Ulu Lulu to anyone that is looking for a nice, comfortable place to stay on the east side of East Maui.

Wonderful place. Cottage itself is exquisitely decorated yet has all the modern conveniences. Host (Leokane) was very welcoming and helpful. Location is simply incredible: it is only few miles to Hana in case anyone wants formal dining or casual lunch, but it is within walking distance of lovely Hamoa beach (good swimming and bodysurfing; even some snorkeling, which appears to be rare in Hana area) and Venus pools. The best thing (at least for me) is that it is possible to walk along the shoreline and, in mere 10-15 minutes, reach either Venus pools or Hamoa beach. Imagine waking up right before the sunrise and walking across the pasture, taking a dip in a tidepool, following the shore cliffs to reach Venus pools at sunrise. Lifetime memory...

We had a relaxing stay at Hale Ulu Lulu. It was such a nice surprise to enter the house with Leokane's own Hawaiian c.d. playing! The house was very clean and nicely decorated. So many extras were included such as fresh flowers, a well stocked pantry with all of the cooking gadgets, kimono bathrobes, high count cotton sheets, dvd player, dimmed lighting, etc. It did not take long at all to feel extremely tranquil with the coziness and privacy Hale Ulu Lulu offers! Not only do we look forward to coming back to our Hana "hale", we loved the warm aloha that Leokane and Chris showed us. The bonus was listening to Leokane perform live at the Hana Hotel, such an amazing voice! In summary, I highly recommend staying at Hale Ulu Lulu, you won't be disapointed!!!

Dearest Chris & Leokane,We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to your peaceful home. The moment we arrived, we were instantly taken with the beautiful setting...and the lovely Aloha greeting from some very happy dogs. Hale Ulu Lulu is simply stunning - you have crafted a perfect getaway cottage – comfortable, serene, and yet only minutes to beaches, sights, etc. How could anyone NOT find joy there? :-) Leokane, your music is wonderful, and is the perfect complement to the island experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to hear you sing for the festival at Hana Bay, and we thank you for so generously welcoming us into the community. Chris, it was great to chat with you – and we wish you best of luck with the ongoing project(s). We appreciate the amount of effort that you have put into the homes – the renovations, overall design, and attention to detail are just incredible. Though our visit was far too short, we’ll always remember our few days in Hana paradise – and we certainly hope to return again in the future. All our best to you, Duke, Kimo, and “Kimo 2” Namaste and mahalo nui loa, Loretta Jo & Karl

A one bed room cottage with all the right touches... beautiful views, tasteful and artsy decorations, beautiful wood floors, convenient to everything on Hana side. Everything you can think of is already there, right down to the espresso machine and olive oil. Leokane and Chris are wonderful and knowledgeable hosts. Leokane is a well-known Hawaiian singer. We saw him at the Hotel Hana- Maui and he was wonderful. He also does an energetic hula. So, if you want a place to just get away from it all and relax, this is it. BTW, the food at the Hotel Hana Maui is mediocre at best. Better to go to the bar and skip dinner there.

Greeted by Hawaiian music playing in the background, fresh orchids, gorgeous wood floors, vintage Hawaiiana touches, and a drop dead gorgeous view, we were blessed to spend two magical days in Hana at this unbelievable cottage. The special attention to detail and ambience of the home as well as our hosts attentiveness, made this a highlight of our trip to Maui!

We spent the last four nites of our Maui anniversary vacation at Hale Ulu Lulu. What a sanctuary! From the moment we arrived, we felt like this sweeet guest house was OUR home away from home. Chris and Leaokane (and Kimo, of course!) definitely know how to make their guests feel welcomed. We explored the entire Hana area, and Chris was extremely helpful in directing us to some lesser-known places of natural beauty. Natural beauty is what Hana is all about. Its people and its environment are something you absolutely must experience if you visit Maui. Don't just "do" the road to Hana. STAY at one of the Malanai Guest Houses -- you'll be so glad you did! P.S. We love your CD, Leokane. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Such a gorgeous house! Very centrally located to all of the beautiful and fun things to see and do in Hana, yet so peaceful. Bubble baths in the clawfoot bathtub, cooking big breakfasts, and daily visits from Kimo (the friendliest, cutest, and most well-behaved dog I've ever met) were special highlights. Highly recommended. We hope to come back very soon! Mahalo nui loa!!!

We fell in love with Hana - and our plantation bungalow was a part of that experience. Greeted by flowers and Hawaiian music, it was great from the moment we walked in. The beautiful art and the tub and Kimo... We later met our family in Kaanapali where we go every couple of years - and missed the truly working kitchen in Hana. And Leokane - we LOVE your cd. Meke Mahalo. We look forward to drinks with both of you next time - thanks for all the suggestions too. We want to begin and end future family vacations in Heavenly Hana at the Hale Ulu Lulu.

Sorry for the delay in making a comment, but my now fiancee and I stayed at this gorgeous, perfectly located find last August for 4 days. Leokani and Chris were so great in communication leading up to our stay and the place is immaculate and full of great Hana mellow vibes. I recommend shopping at Costco/Safeway, packing ice in a cooler, and hiding out at Hale Ulu Lulu for at least 5 days. The house is STOCKED with all of the beach items you need. This is a MUST stay in my opinion. Never have I felt more relaxed.

A few months before leaving on our vacation, a friend told us NOT to go to Hana. We sure are glad that we ignored his terrible advice! We spent 3 nights in Hale Ulu Lulu and then left for 5 nights in Lahaina. We wished we never left, as our time in Hana was the highlight of our trip! We felt completely at home in the beautiful accommodations. After seeing whales jumping from the porch our last morning, it was VERY hard to leave. We had a great time, and would recommend your place to anyone. Thanks!

Fabulous! Hale Ulu Lulu is everything it is advertised to be and more. Proprietors Chris & Leokane put a great deal of effort into ensuring our 2 night stay in late January was perfect. We arrived to a beautifully decorated plantation house with Hawaiian music playing and plumeria blossoms decorating every room. Nearby is a walk along the ocean cliffs to Venus Pool. Short drive to an incredible Bamboo Forest hike. Be sure to sit outside at night and stargaze and get up in time to catch the sunrise--nothing like it!

Thank you for providing a beautiful getaway in Hana. We were so glad to be able to stay for 3 days and not do the road to and from Hana in one day. This was a perfect honeymoon cottage and we found ourselves happy to stay at the cottage and on the beautiful lawn relaxing. The sunrise was well worth getting up for; and we enjoyed Hermoa beach less than 1/2 mile away. The Hawaiin music on CD's was wonderful. No artificial silk flowers here. Live orchids welcomed us and plumeria flowers were spread throughout the house., . The gourmet kitchen was a joy to cook in and made for easy clean up. I loved the decorator colors and comfortable furnishings. Your photos do not even begin to show how beautiful Hale Ulu Lulu is. The deep claw foot tub made for wonderful bubble baths every night. Thank you for thinking and attending to every detail and checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. You are wonderful hosts. Mahalo

We spent our 10 year wedding anniversary at the Hale Ulu Lulu cottage and loved every minute we were there! We planned our whole trip on the availability of this cottage and we were were not disappointed. As soon as we walked in, we were amazed at how lovely everything was. We could tell from the pictures how nice it was, but the pictures don't do it justice! The sunrise in the morning is directly in front of the cottage door and you can see the ocean and hear the waves all day long. Every detail was wonderful from the flowers everywhere around the house to the stocked pantry and fridge with all the extras you can think of for cooking a gourmet meal. There wasn't anything missing! We were really bummed that we had to leave and head to Kaanapali for 4 nights after that. The rest of our trip just didn't compare to our time spent in Hana. Next trip, we will stay the entire time at the cottage. The location couldn't be more perfect. Thank you so much for having us and we can't wait to come back. It will always remain a very special place to us.

After the beautiful but stressful Hana Hwy. drive it was wonderful to arrive at the Hale Ulu Lulu house to the sound of Hawaiian music and the smell of fresh flowers strewn everywhere. Would definitely want to stay there again if ever in that part of the world. Have told many friends about the houses and recommended them highly.

January 8-14, 2008 Ah......Heavenly Hana. Heavenly Hale Ulu Lulu! I am back at work remembering the peace and beauty of this special place in Hawaii. As I look out my office window at the snow that has been piling up here in the Adirondack Mountains, I am warmed by Leokane's lovely CD and the memories of sunrises seen from Hale Ulu Lulu. Thank you for sharing your special guesthouse. The view, the special amenities, and the lovingly restored and cared for cottage made our stay so memorable. We so enjoyed sharing a glass of wine and restoration stories with Leokane and appreciated Chris' help connecting to the internet. The dogs were an added delight! The local books you provided, the suggestions for sightseeing, and Leokane's music offered an opportunity for a much deeper understanding and respect for the culture of Hawaii--and especially of Hana. We were blessed to be able to spend six relaxing days in this special place. Hale Ulu Lulu and the special men who so lovingly care for it will remain a treasured memory. Dear Chris and Leokane,We loved Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu! Our stay was way too short. We decided to go to Hana because the Hana Highway in itself is a spectacular drive. And, there are so many natural attractions in Hana - beaches, waterfalls, etc. But, Hale Ulu Lulu is so awesome that it is worth the trip in itself. It has exquisite Mahogany floors. There are dimmers on just about every light fixture to enable you to create a really romantic setting. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. You will find everything you could possibly need to cook a gourmet meal. If you forget to purchase items such as Olive Oil or Balsamic Vinegar, you may find them in the pantry. There are also cloth napkins to make your dinners extra special. This cottage is so comfortable and exceptionally well maintained that I could live here permanently! The attention to detail and the comfortable furnishings make it feel more like a home than a rental. One of the things that really made Hale Ulu Lulu so memorable was "check-in". I was cranky at best when we got to Hana - really bad mood is probably more accurate. Our drive to Hana was stressful - it was raining and extremely foggy. A tree had fallen across the road and a car bumped into our rental car while we were trying to move aside to allow trucks through to clear the road. We were advised to return back to ?? and not to continue to Hana by one of the day trip tour drivers. We ignored him. When we did finally arrive at Hale Ulu Lulu, my mood changed completely! The sun was shining. The double doors were standing wide open. Hawaiian music was playing. There were orchids and Plumeria blossoms just everywhere! It is really hard to describe. This cottage is so inviting and so so romantic - just incredible. A call to see if everything was okay shortly after we arrived. All of the stress disappeared. My thoughts were - it could rain for the next three days. I could stay in this place forever - relax and do nothing. I couldn't’t think of a nicer or more romantic place to stay. One of the really unexpected pleasures of this vacation was discovering the voice of Leokane Pryor. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase Maunahele from 7DAVID7. I could go on and on about your voice. Kipahulu, Maunahele, Ehukai, and Puamana make the stresses of the day completely melt away during a long stressful drive from work. I am anxiously waiting for your next CD. I almost forgot to mention,

The Hale Ulu Lulu is just what one would want to find at the end of the road . . . your beautiful cottage, with the music playing, the ocean out front, is a welcoming, comfortable retreat. We really enjoyed being at your cottage, a place without the usual hotel-style "baggage". Kimo and Ua were especially welcoming staff members. Thanks. Jeffrey and Oscar

This cottage is a wonderful place. The warmth of the islands is reflected in everything from the interior design to the great day-trip ideas in the guest book. Great Hawaiian CDs for your cocktail hour as you look and hear the ocean crashing. Treat yourself to a vacation site you'll always cherish and remember!

We loved staying here for a few days in late October. The cottage is so nice, modern conveniences and quiet. Lots of extras provided by the hosts from beach chairs to blenders. We slept with all windows and doors open even during rain. Very close to Hana and Hamoa Beach. You will not want to leave of course. Enjoy. Best to you Chris.

We loved staying at Hale Ulu Lulu. The pictures on the website do not even do the cottage justice! It is more beautiful than we imagined. Everything was wonderful, and when we manage to get back to Maui, we will definitely plan on staying here again. Everything was absolutely wonderful, peaceful, and as close to nirvana as we have been.

We spent seven days at Hale Ulu Lulu in early August and it was a blissful vacation. Hana is gorgeous and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring, hiking, swimming, relaxing, and playing with Kimo and Ua (the property dogs). Chris and Leokane were gracious hosts, and they have truly created a serene and calming setting at this adorable cottage. Our trip was fabulous and we will certainly try to get back to Hale Ulu Lulu at some point in our future!

Chris and Leokane have created an Eden in Hana, and what's more, they're sharing it. We felt very lucky to be staying there. The house is stunningly perfect, a mix of Old Hawaii and 21st century amenities. But even more important to us, they exude a sense of real aloha and generosity. It felt good to be there, with them as hosts.

Hale Ulu Lulu was exactly like the pictures on the website. The large expanse of lawn with the ocean in the near distance was what we saw looking out the front door. The kitchen was well equipped and the washer/dryer was well used. The Wifi connection was an added convenience. My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing stay.

The 3 nights we spent at Hale Ulu Lulu were so peaceful. We loved the decor, the grounds, the well-equipped kitchen, and the spectacular view, and we really enjoyed exploring this part of Maui which is still relatively undeveloped. We would definitely stay here again if we are ever lucky enough someday to return to Maui. Mahalo once again to Chris for helping us work out the car problem-above and beyond the call of duty-but much appreciated.

I simply cannot say enough wonderful things about our week-long stay in Hana at the Hale Ulu Lulu for our 30th wedding anniversary. The house is really lovely and close to all the beaches. Right across the street is the awesome lava rock coastline where you will be mesmerized as you watch the waves crashing against the rocks. You can sit in the spacious yard at night and look up at a sky full of stars. The house offers free internet service and phone calls to the mainland. The kithen is by far the most well-equipped one I have ever used. Everything you could possibly need is there. The house has a washer and dryer, as well as snorkeling/ beach/picnic supplies. Even the bathroom has everything you need. Our memories of our stay there will stay with us forever. The location is perfect if you're looking for a quiet get-away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts. We highly recommend the Hale Ulu Lulu for at least a week in Heavenly Hana!

We spent two days of our honeymoon at this beatiful home and it was not long enough. We were blown away with the attention to detail of this home. You have everything you are going to need for cooking and entertainment. Venus Pools is a must while visiting. We will definately be back and for much longer than 2 days. Thank you Chris and Leokane!! Bob Moody and Anna Minihan

Hale Ulu Lulu is a gorgeous cottage with all the necessary amenities, and beyond, to have a fabulous vacation. It is a home away from home with a well-equipped kitchen and a claw foot tub looking out over banana trees. It is so beautiful and relaxing that we didn't want to leave. It is near all of the wonderful Hana sights and our hosts generously shared there knowledge of the area. Chris and Leokane made sure we were happy and that our every need was met. We will certainly stay there again when we return to Hana someday.

The most wonderful place we have ever stayed!! The location was perfect and the home just added to the wonderfull feeling we felt while there! It has been over a month since we were there and we still talk about how much we miss it. Everything is easy to get to and there is a great "pool" that is close by. If you are going to Hana, this is a perfect plact to stay! We will go back!

This place was magical - both Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu. Better than we expected and we expected paradise. I'll never forget sitting in the lounge chairs in front of the house while warm rain soaked me and then having the sun pop out a few minutes later and drench me in its warmth. Hamoa Beach was, as Michener claimed, the most perfect beach in the world- and its less than a mile away. And the 'red sand beach' was a sweet little surprise. After 4 days in Hana we made the mistake of spending our last 2 in Lahaina. We won't do that again!

We spent our honeymoon on Maui and the first week in Kaanapali. We were ready for a break from the busy beaches and bars and we found it in Hana! The house is gorgeous and so relaxing. You immediately feel pampered and relaxed when you walk in the door. We can't recommend it enough. Take time to tour around Hana, go on hikes, swim at Homoa Beach and bring books to read. And food to cook, the kitchen was fully equipped!
