There are many artists living in West Marin producing Fine Art. Gallery Route One displays works of the local artist cooperative: On Memorial Day weekends and Thanksgiving weekend, over thirty artists open their studios for display and sales. Toby’s Feed Barn has an ongoing gallery of art, photography and sculpture.
Excellent opportunities abound for Birding year round, and not only from the Sea Star Cottage deck. The area sits astride the north south migratory flyway. Beaches, marshlands and ponds offer waterfowl of all sorts. Nearby Audibon Canyon Ranch is a nesting ground for Egrets and Herons. Meadows and forests are natural habitat for songbirds, woodpeckers and raptors. Each year the annual Christmas bird count takes place in December usually accounting for over 200 species.
The Point Reyes National Seashore Beaches are one of the big attractions to the area. Visit the Point Reyes National Seashore site for a complete list of beache.In addition, wonderful beaches on our western shore of Tomales Bay can be reached in minutes: Heart’s Desire beach and Shell Beach, where summer and autumn temperatures are right for swimming.
Cycling is enormously popular in West Marin. Bring your own or rent from Point Reyes Outdoors. Please be careful and courteous on narrow roads with no shoulders, and share the road. Check the PRNS headquarters for trails open to mountain biking.
Golf can be enjoyed at a beautiful course - San Geronimo Golf Course, about 20 minutes away. Within a 45 minute drive are Indian Valley Golf in Novato, and Adobe Creek and Rooster Run in Petaluma, all open to the public.
Hiking is a natural drawing attraction the National Seashore. Hundreds of miles of trails lead you to various and quite different habitats. The PRNS visitor center at Bear Valley, just a few minutes drive from Sea Star Cottage, is the primary visitor center for the park and provides an orientation of the roads, trails and natural history.
Kayaking is one of the special activities on the bay. Rent a kayak to explore on your own or book one of the many tours available. Blue Water Kayaking offers a full rage of interesting tours which launch in Inverness, just a minute up the road. Stand-up Paddle-boards are also available. Point Reyes Outdoors offers tours as well as rental and hiking excursions.
Live Music can be enjoyed at a number of local venues. The Dance Palace in Point Reyes Station has an on going calendar of events: Concerts occur at the Old Western Saloon also Point Reyes and at Rancho Nicasio in nearby Nicasio.
West Marin is known for its organic produce, cheese making and wines. Tours of farms and artisan foods, cheese, meats, wine, and oysters can be privately arranged at During the summer and autumn, Toby's Feed Barn in Point Reyes Station hosts a small but world-class farmer's market with strictly local offerings. From fresh flowers,eggs, honey, breads, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, it is a highlight of the week. The market occurs Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm, June through October.
The Pacific Gray Whale makes its annual migration, south to the birthing grounds in Mexico during the winter months, and back north to the rich Artic waters in early spring. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is one of the most westerly points in the continental USA and offers excellent viewing opportunities of these leviathans. A large colony of Elephant Seals has established itself near Chimney Rock with excellent docent led viewing opportunities. In January, the seals come into the bay to feed and be watched from the cottage deck.
Fabulous wildflowers erupt from February to June throughout the area. Chimneyrock is particularly spectacular.
