Why the Owner Chose Colorado Springs
My husband and I bought this house as a bit of a lark - it was featured in a NYT piece in the Friday "Escapes" section on Feng Shui homes. My mother-in-law was increasingly unable to travel and it just made more and more sense as we talked about it: why don't we buy it so we have a place for all of us to stay when we visit her? I did a little research about VRBO homes in the area and, at least at the time, there wasn't much competition (there's more now but we're still doing okay). We set up the house to please ourselves and our guests at the same time. It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun too.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We love, love, love the view at all hours, from watching the sun come up over the mountains early in the morning to dusk shadows and then sometimes a beautiful moon over the pass. My husband and I also love walking the Mt. Esther trail every morning we can (the head of the trail is a 10-minute walk away). When we're at the house, we enjoy complete privacy and the sense that we've gotten away from it all, but we also love the convenience of driving 20 minutes or less to many shops/attractions, from Colorado Springs to Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Green Mountain Falls, Cave of the Winds, the local Rock Shop (our kids take forever to spend $5 in there!), Pike's Peak cog train, and more.

A great place for a family get-together

Our family spent the Thanksgiving weekend at Kulsa house (2011). Eight of us slept very comfortably, with room for more. The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived, and we found the kitchen to be well equipped with great cookware which was super, since we prepared a big Thanksgiving dinner there as well as many other meals. We especially loved the layout of the house. Its three levels gave us plenty of room to be together as well as to spread out when anyone wanted to escape togetherness for awhile. :) We would certainly come back and stay again.

Our family stayed at this wonderful getaway in September. It is hands down one of the favorite vrbo places we have stayed! SO beautiful, inside and out! The pictures do NOT do it justice! The owner was so very wonderful to deal with as well! The house was MORE than accomodating! We visited so many places nearby while we were there. We experienced several bears in the area as well! Our kids (and my husband and I) were so excited to see all the wildlife around. If you like bbq, The Front Range is an absolute MUST!!! It was the best food ever!! Such a GREAT vacation!! We can't wait to come back!!
Owner response:Frana, thanks for the great review - glad you had a great time and would love to hear about the great bbq places you dined at!

We have just returned from our stay at your lovely house in Colorado. We so enjoyed our stay there. The location was perfect. There are so many things to do nearby. It was the perfect launching point for all our activities and a perfect resting place afterwards when we were all tired. We loved the view, the hummingbirds, the wildflowers and all the wildlife. The kids had a ball exploring the woods and we loved having evening meals on the deck. We worked puzzles, played games and the kids even made up a couple of plays and performed them for us on the lower deck. All in all, your house was an essential element of our very enjoyable family vacation. And it was so thoughtful of you to order the perfect weather for us while we were there. We even saw a rainbow, just like in the picture!

We have just returned from a week at this fabulous home. Our group included 6 adults and 2 children. We had a glorious reunion with the family, and everyone was most comfortable. This is a fabulous property. The ones watching tv in the lower level one night did get a close up of the bear, peeking in the window! The home is clean, comfortable, convenient to everything. We could not have been happier. Thank you!

Our family had such a wonderful time in your beautiful home in the mountains. Everything was just perfect the entire stay. During our stay, we went to the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Olympic Training Center, and Denver, but wherever we went, this was always a wonderful place to come back to every night. We all enjoyed Esther's Trail and we waited in anticipation of the mysterious bear! Last night htough, we found the garbage can dumped over, so we assumed he had come for a visit. Tomorrow we will venture home to Phoenix - 110 degrees!

The cabin was fabulous! We had a great time and kept busy! The size of the cabin was perfect for 7 adults and 3 children. ...We were up with the sun everyday with those big beautiful windows, and we even saw a bear one day! Thank you for allowing us to have a wonderful time.

We're back home and I want to take a minute to say "thank you." Even though it wasn't free, your house felt like a wonderful gift for our 40th wedding anniversary gathering in Colorado. It was very nice without being pretentious. It made us feel at home right away, with familiar books for the two year old, extra space for the twenty six year old, and attractive, comfy furnishings without a "do not touch" feel. The views are spectacular and made even our down times special. I spent a long time one morning just swinging on the downstairs swing and singing with my granddaughter as we watched birds and enjoyed the mountain breezes. Way better than any tourist attraction! Here is what my son wrote in your guest book: "It wasn't always certain that our family--fighting both a wide variety of health issues and Colorado's unpredictable weather--would be able to ride to the top of Pike's Peak. There were many moments when it seemed unlikely to happen. But in the end, when we stood together at the summit, looking down at the beautiful vista below, it was worth every moment of doubt and struggle. Similarly, it wasn't always certain that 5 adults and a toddler would enjoy one another's company for an entire week. And frankly, here again there were some moments when it seemed unlikely. But in the end, we were glad to have had the time together, looking back on our family's history, while looking forward to its future. Of course, it didn't hurt that we were able to return to this beautiful home at the end of each busy day. Everything here--from the giant mountains outside the windows to the tiny details within--was exactly what we needed. We never learned to take the magnificent view for granted, but we soon came to assume that this would be a place of constant security and ease. For some of us this trip to Colorado was a homecoming. [My husband grew up in Colorado Springs.] For others a new adventure. [My daughter-in-law had never seen western mountains.] For all of us, it was a wonderful experience and we wouldn't have wanted to share it anywhere but here at the Kulsa House."

We were all entertained by the activities available to us. The house was very convenient and allowed much room for the six of us and the dog. Colorado Springs was very dog friendly the entire time which allowed the whole family to enjoy the stay. We ventured out and drove to Pike's Peak (don't attempt if your vehicle is not in good condition). The Olympic Training center was a great experience and we hit up about every gift shop in a 30-minute radius. Thank you so much for allowing us all to stay -- we enjoyed it very much!

We stayed in this house for our son's May '08 graduation from the Air Force Academy. It was a wonderful gathering place for our family. The house is comfortable and clean and the views are incredible. Distance to the Academy for graduation events was not bad -- it was pretty easy getting to everything on time. Great location also for Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and Manitou Springs, a great little town! (Check out Adam's Mountain Cafe .... yum!!!)
