Why the Owner Chose Haiku

As explained above this is family land, but even if it was not we would have purchased in Haiku. Our area is tropical, with green fields and beautiful flowers. We are in the "non-tourist" area of Maui. Waterfalls and the Bamboo Forest are just down the street. Haiku town has a place to get a latte, as well as the best fish taco stand on island. We have two groceries not over two miles away, two bakeries, numerous restaurants -including Mama's Fish House. Best of all there is a real sense of community.

The Unique Benefits at this House

To awaken to bird song is my favorite moment of the day. Ron's would be the time he spends on his tractor. We love the view of the gorge and the ocean from the Lanai where we sit having out coffee. We find working the land and making the space ever more beautiful truly joyful. We share that joy with our full time caretakers, Alain and Elizabeth who live in the cottage at the other end of the property. To jump into the pool at the end of the day and then into the hot tub to enjoy a glass of wine is pretty terrific. We are proud of what we have created and love to read the comments that our guests make after they too have felt the magic.

Owner's Map of Haiku

We are the Wilbur’s, Ron and Barbara. Our property is family land. Ron’s paternal grandparents were born in the islands, grandfather and father on Maui . We purchased 5 acres of the original 30 acre parcel homesteaded by Ron’s paternal grandmother from his father in 1975. The land had been leased for pineapple. We first planted all five acres in a type of Protea, not a successful venture. We then more sensibly planted palms, which we continue to do to this day. We also have tropical flowers and our newest venture is growing Vanilla orchids (that is where the Vanilla bean comes from)

We built our home in 1985 with a full remodel in 1999. We have children and grandchildren on the mainland – the appeal to spend time with them is great. This allows time for others to share our much loved home.

The picture is from a Sun Valley, Idaho trip in January

    • We thought the pictures didnt do the beauty of the palms, ocean view, and flowers any justice. Way nicer in person, we were excited pulling into the pole house!! We also loved the town of Pa'ia. Dont miss the sunsets and many rainbows from the deck, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • We have stayed at the Pole House many times. Each time it gets better. The Palms are growing and the fields are finely manicured. The private entry and drive to the house calms us and invites us to relax and sink into the Maui spirit. The house is so pleasing and there are always flowers to greet us. We feel like we have come home.

    • We stayed at the Pole House for my 40th birthday and it was spectacular. The property is amazing and the pool and house make for such a relaxing stay. I hope to return to the house someday to breathe in those amazing Hawaii breezes. Also, the bird feeder brought in some amazing birds. The caretakers were helpful, but non-intrusive. Wish I were back there!

    • We stayed at the Pole House for 3 nights after spending 5 nights at the Four Seasons and 5 nights at the Ritz Carlton. We wished in retrospect we had stayed at the Pole House the whole time! The property is nothing short of spectacular. Every little comfort and convenience has been thought of and provided for. We will definitely be back next year!

    • We stayed at the Pole House for 5 days this August, and it was pure PARADISE! The property is beautiful, the house spacious and wonderfully cool with the tradewinds and the birds are very friendly. Alain and Elizabeth were very helpful and magically never appeared until after our stay. We will definitely be back again! The only warning I would give is regarding the humidity - this side of the island gets ton of rain and with the heat it tends to ratchet up the humidity and towels and shoes and things will not air dry. Just part of the tropics I guess!

    • The pictures just don't do justice to how lovely the home, grounds and pool are. This is a quiet area, but near enough to Paia and other towns to do shopping. This was the perfect place for our 25th anniversary!

The true meaning of the word, Paradise. With a contented sigh, we let all our worries go and enjoyed everything about this amazing property. It feels like someone's well-loved and perfectly maintained home except all the dresser drawers and closets are empty and ready for the new arrivals. Comfortable beds, a beautiful koa kitchen, big living room were perfect for our family--and that was just the inside. Outside is one gorgeous vista after another. The caretakers are just a quick call away but all was so perfectly prepared that we never needed their help. Please save space for us next year.
