Lone Pine farmhouse description

The Hogback Ranch House is a 1,500 sq. ft. two bedroom two bath home on a hill at the base of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is the center of activity on the 240 acre Hogback Ranch. The ranch house overlooks a pond immediately in front of the porch and meadow area - and then in turn overlooks a beautiful stretch of the Owens Valley down to the Haiwee Reservoir.

Both bedrooms have queen beds (one with a Tempurpedic mattress) and each bedroom has an attached bathroom. There are two adult-length bunk beds in a nook in between the bedrooms and the kitchen, and with these the house can accommodate 8 adults. A comfortable sitting room with stunning views is the place for gatherings. The ranch house is a solid modular home and has been upgraded and decorated with a comfortable ranch atmosphere. It has modern amenities including a washer and dryer, dishwasher, central heating, a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and an outdoor cooking area. The ranch house is a wonderful and comfortable home, but what attracts people in the first place - and what calls them back - is the where the house has been placed.

There isn’t much fancy with respect to architecture in the makeup of the ranch house. Instead, its magic comes from it’s placement in such a beautiful and remote setting. There is a handsome and functional porch made by old telegraph poles from the valley, appointed with Paiute Indian grinding stones from the property, providing a great outdoor sitting and dining area. The ranch house sits under enormous trees which shade the house in the summer and which protect the house from the snows and winds of winter. The perch of the ranch house over the rest of the 240 acres down to distant highway 395 is captivating.

The ranch is situated between Olancha Peak (12,132 ft.) and Round Mountain (9,884 ft.). The homesite is adjacent to Hogback Creek. The Sage Flat area of the Sierras offers unparalleled beauty, a truly remote setting with easy access to wilderness areas by horse or foot.

The ranch is a perfect place for equestrians (Western or English) to bring their horses for their stay. The pasture and corrals are close to being completed for equestrian vacation stays. Currently, a portable corral is needed yet there is plenty of room to set it up and there is green grass for 3-4 horses to graze.

Mountain bike and adventure motorcycle riders have a comfortable and remote place to stay in the ranch with access to hundreds of miles of trails out the front gate of the ranch.

The ranch is an ideal place writers and artists of all types to set themselves purposefully into an inspiring environment - whether to wrestle obstacles to their creativity, or to set free what essence is present without interruption or distraction.

There are 3 wall tents which can accommodate up to 20 persons, at additional cost. There is an outdoor cooking area dedicated for tent campers and an outhouse. The tent camping is ideal for scout troops, high school sports team 'training camps,' university geology exploration trips in the Owen's Valley, retreats, and the like.

The ranch is 3 ¼ hours north of Los Angeles and Orange County (if one leaves with attention to traffic patterns in Southern California). The Hogback Ranch is 4 hours west of Las Vegas via a beautiful drive through Death Valley. Bishop, California is 75 minutes up the highway, with Mammoth Mountain being 20 to 30 minutes further. The closest neighbors (6 of them) are approximately one mile away. The closest gas station/Mini-Mart is in Olancha approximately 10 minutes away. The closest small town with a store and restaurants is 30 min. distance. The closest ER is 30 minutes away, and the closest full hospital is 50 minutes.

The activities around the ranch property are numerous and include exploration of the Joshua Tree Forest, bird watching, taking a dip in the pond, mountain biking, bouldering, or petting a horse. Within a three mile walk or drive of the ranch house one can explore the Inyo National Forest, hike up the Olancha Trail to the Olancha Pass or Olancha Peak in the Golden Trout Wilderness, explore abandoned mines, take your green sticker dirt bike to the OHV area. Within an hour’s drive you can easily reach portions of Death Valley, arrange with a pack outfitter to go for a half-day or full-day horseback ride, float or kayak the meandering Owens River, take your dual sport motorcycle up the most beautiful valley for adventure riding, access any of the trail heads up and down the Eastern Sierras into numerous wilderness areas, arrange for professional rock climbing instruction in the Alabama Hills, visit Manzanar Historical Site, drive to Whitney Portal to start your climb up Mt. Whitney, or visit the entertaining antique shops and soda fountain at the Randsburg Ghost Town. Within two hours drive from the ranch you can ski or swim at Mammoth and June Lakes, reach the edge of Yosemite National Park, Mono Lake, Bodie Ghost Town/State Park, explore the greater depths of Death Valley, reach the Bristlecone Pine Forest, or take your horse or dirt-bike up to Kennedy Meadows. These are of course the activities for the restless or adventuresome. The sitting, watching, and being in nature will pull forth the truly important thoughts and considerations from one’s life.

Philosophical influences toward choosing this ranch-stay:

'To be admitted to Nature's hearth costs nothing. None is excluded, but excludes himself. You have only to push aside the curtain.' .......Henry David Thoreau

'I am looking forward to getting back to the sea and nature again, where the overstimulated psyche can recover in the presence of that infinite peace and spaciousness.'....... Carl Jung

'You must not know too much or be too precise about birds and trees and flowers and water; a certain free margin, and even vagueness, - ignorance, credulity - helps your enjoyment of these things.'.........Walt whitman

'I have not tired of the wilderness; rather I enjoy it's beauty and the vagrant life I lead, more keenly all the time. I prefer the saddle to the streetcar and the star sprinkled sky to a roof, the obscure and difficult trail leading into the unknown to any paved highway, and the deep peace of the wild to the discontent bred by cities.'.........Everett Ruess

'Not all those who wander are lost.'.....JRR Tolkien

'Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of autumn.' ....John Muir

'In order to understand the world one has to turn away from it on occasion.' ..Albert Camus

'Solitude is not something you must hope for in the future. rather, it is a deepening of the present, and unless you look for it in the present you will never find it.'..........Thomas Merton

'Once their were Brook trout in the streams of the mountains. You could see them in the amber current where the white edges of their fins whimpled softly in the flow. they smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.......Cormac McCarthy

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2013

About the owner: After decades of traveling to the Eastern Sierras for adventure and the simple beauties of sitting in nature’s rhythm I moved and made the Sierras my home. Six years after moving to Sage Flat Road, a few miles from Olancha, a neighboring ranch came up for sale as one of the last large-parcels in the Eastern Sierras still surrounded by public lands. Beginning as a very young boy, my brothers and I experienced our grandparents taking us time and again for adventure trips up through the Owens Valley into the Eastern Sierras, Yosemite, Death Valley, Bodie State Historic Park, the Bristlecone Pine Forest, and neighboring areas of the Mojave Desert. We always went up the spectacular eastern side of the Sierras and we camped and hiked and explored and talked and created indelible memories. In my teenage years I backpacked in the Sierras on a number of long trips and developed a love for the high country as well. I am a fourth generation Californian and have spent the majority of my youth in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Living near the coast in my youth I felt a love for the wilderness that is the Pacific Ocean, yet I lived always imagining my next trip to the Eastern Sierras. I attended university and graduate school in Southern California and spent a number of years maintaining clinical psychology practices in Southern California, and for some years practiced psychology on Indian Reservations in Northern Nevada and South Dakota. Still, I always came back to the Eastern Sierras in mind, memory, and in person. As soon as my life allowed I moved to the Eastern Sierras while maintaining a part-time practice in Southern California. I spend the majority of my time now in the outdoors at the ranch working to rebuild its agricultural elements and spending time writing, reflecting, tracking and observing wildlife, and exploring the nearly un-visited gems of the area.

Why the Owner Chose Lone Pine:
Many people from Southern California speed past the southern section of the Eastern Sierras at 80 plus miles per hour shooting for locations further north. However, the Sage Flat area of the Sierras offers unparalleled beauty, very few people, a truly remote setting, easy access to wilderness areas by horse or foot, and is only 3 ¼ hours from Los Angeles or Orange County. That proximity has made traveling back and forth between my home near the ranch to work in Southern California possible. This location has also led to family members and friends returning time and time again to experience the peace and tranquility, and various adventures, without being exhausted by a difficult drive. It is the very best location to use for families and small groups that wish to have a most enjoyable “base camp” from which to explore the national parks and beautiful sights up and down the entire Owens Valley

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The ranch house is located at about 5,100 feet at the base of the rocky crags of the Eastern Sierras as they jut from the valley floor and is situated between Olancha Peak (12,132 ft.) and Round Mountain (9,884 ft.). The homesite is adjacent to Hogback Creek which was given its name in the late 1800’s. The 240 acre parcel is surrounded on three sides by public lands, partially by National Forest Service lands and partially by Bureau of Land Management lands. The homesite is reached by a 1 mile dirt driveway which leaves Sage Flat Rd. and crosses the property. There are extraordinary opportunities for families or small groups to hike and wander on the property free and away from all of the distractions and burdens of urban and suburban life. All of the adjacent public lands are of course open for continuing your exploration. The neighbors down the hill on the north side of the property are as friendly as they are interesting in the event you run across them in your walkabouts.
