Had a great time!

We had a great time here. The place is cozy and the deck is awesome - it overlooks the bay. There were surfers to watch at all times of day and plenty of room for our 1 year old to (safely) roam. It's got character - not a cookie cutter condo!. We didn't have any of the problems the people who wrote the negative review had. We saw one bug the whole time we were there and it was out on the deck. As far as the noise - People, it's an oceanfront cottage! Waves have a habit of crashing into seawalls. That's what they're there for! I'm a singer/songwriter and had a good time recording a few songs with the waves crashing in the background. We'll always cherish them. We'd gladly go back again.

Ants and other crawly things

Guest: Rybar (Edmonton, Alberta Canada)
Date of Stay: 04/21/11 Review Submitted: 09/27/11

This place sucked so bad. We arrived with such high hopes but when we got in the place was crawling with ants and other insects. There was insect spray left for guests, so we used it and killed everything we saw but they kept coming back. I called the owner, who was not local and could not view the problem. She offered to put us up at a nearby motel to get it fumigated, but that was hardly a fair offer given our limited time on the island, so we declined. She did not offer us a refund and I offered to pay a few nights just to get out of the deal, but she refused. We stayed one sleepless night. I finally offered her half--unbelievably, she still refused but now offered to refund us three nights because in her mind that was how long we would have had to stay at a hotel while she had the place readied. I never accepted that deal, but when she later sent the refund I took it because what else could I do? Besides the problem of the hundreds of ants in every room, there were other bugs including the big ones you find in tropical places. There was food in the cupboards and the ants and roaches were there too. There was also noise from the busy road and the water itself crashes into the sea wall in the front of the cottage, so you need to like that sort of thing--it is very loud. This place really is waterfront. Well, the pictures in the listing looked pretty good....that's about it from our point of view. (We phoned around and were lucky to find a great place at Waikoloa. Our anniversary vacation was saved, but at a high cost.)

Owner response:There were very large rains prior to the guests arrival and indeed, as always happens in a monsoon season by the ocean, there were, one day no bugs, and the next many. I was very sorry and tried hard to accommodate these folks but to no avail. I offered lovely accommodations in a beautiful hotel nearby (not motel) while we were taking care of the problem. Since it was a stormy season the sea was quite active and the waves were crashing on the seawall by the house. I am told that they were very unhappy with this (I personally love it). With all of that sea activity you do not hear anything in the outside world! These folks found as many things as they could to be unhappy with. If you read other reviews you will find that most people love the cottage.

What a beautiful place for R & R. We truly enjoyed the magnificent views -- waves, turtles, surfers, sunsets and all. It was breathtaking. Just simpley resting in the lounge chairs on the deck and taking it all in. Snorkling in Kahalu'u Bay - fantastic!!! Such a sweet spot. Listening to the waves at night is a remakable way to drift off to sleep and awaken to face a new dawn. For anyone reading this I would hightly recommend the Outrigger Canoe Outings in Keahou Harbor on Tues, Thurs, and Sat - just down the road. Marvelous, fun and refreshing!!! Prepare to jump in! The volcano was awesome -- walking across the caldera at sunset, Waipio Bay, Akaka Falls, Hapuna Beach, Pololu Valley....and so many more special spots will always be in our hearts and minds. Thank you, Judy, for sharing this very special home. It has been the best yet! Dreamville - -6th year anniversary! P.S. The Mamalahoa Hot Tubs and Stone Massage was exquiite! Wow!

We had a great time at Hale Moana! Everything is so bright and cheerful. We loved the crashing waves lulling us to sleep. We will miss the surfers, the turtles, geckos and the ubiquitos sunshine. We will tell all in Alaska about the hospitality of this place! (and well try not to make them too jealous)ur

Our first vacation in 15 years by ourselves! We had a wonderful time, the cottage was perfect! We will never forget our stay here. This is our fourth trip to Hawaii and until we stayed here, we had not been treated to a home as well stocked and outfitted for a vacation as well as this house is. Thank you for an unforgetable stay in your home. Aloha! Mahalo!
