All the magazines in the house will describe the many wonderful beaches. Here are some of our favorites:
Mullet Bay A very pretty crescent beach only two minutes from the house and you can rent or bring chairs. Don’t bother with the food there as it’s not that good and they take forever to prepare anything. Bring your own instead.
Cupecoy A string of small, narrow beaches backed against the cliffs. Very pretty. Many nudists like to use this beach.
Warning: We advise against going to Guana Beach. The surf is extremely rough and dangerous and cars are often broken into there.
Orient on the French side is a long stretch of beach set up French style- meaning you rent chairs and so it is divided up by the different names of the concessions renting these. There are a lot of water sports, places to eat etc. It is a beautiful beach. We particularly like going to the concession called Palm Beach– it is less crowded and the restaurant is really nice for lunch, but no water sports. If you buy lunch you don’t pay for chairs and umbrellas. However, there are many other areas along this long, beautiful stretch of beach and they are all good.
Pinel Island a tiny spit of sand off the St. Martin coast is nice too. Go to Cul de Sac (past Grand Case) and you park your car at the informal marina where you take a small boat to get there ($7.00 round trip for a 5 minute ride). You can rent chairs and the water is crystal clear and very calm. The restaurant on Pinel provides a very nice lunch or stop in Marigot at Serafina or Le Sucrier and pick up some sandwiches to bring or make them at home!
Le Gallion A calm peaceful bay- very shallow- protected by a reef. This is a nice, laid-back beach. Chair and beach umbrella rental is also available as are inexpensive burgers, sandwiches or a full lunch along with a full range of water sports are also available. The snorkeling is also quite good there. Huge variety of fish in the “grassy areas” in the water and these areas are pretty shallow as well so this is one of the safest and nicest places to snorkel.
Friar’s Bay – Is the same deal as Le Galion- though I tend to like Le Galion better.
Rouge Is a very beautiful beach- the water is deeper and can be a bit rougher but this is very, very pretty beach. About $10 for 2 chairs and an umbrella and the “restaurant” serves great ribs and chicken. This place, unlike at Orient or Galion, is run by locals. (10 minutes from the house)
Plum Bay (Baie aux Prunes) I love this beach. There are no concessions or amenities. It is within 10 minutes of the house. Easiest way to get there is turn right on the main road and go through Mullet Bay (where the golf course is) and through Coupecoy. After you have passed Portocupecoy you go up and around a hill and look for the sign for Baie Long or Long Beach. Turn left down the road towards La Semana and follow the road past La Semana and keep going. The first parking area for a Beach is for Long Beach and the second will be for Plum Beach. Park and walk down to beach. The water and beach are lovely.
Pinel Island: Go to Cul de Sac and follow road to the harbor where you will find boats to Pinel- a lovely tiny island with chairs, restaurants and lovely, clear water. Great for snorkeling.
Many other beaches abound- explore and find the ones that suit you!
Tip for a better beach day: Our island winds generally come out of the east. This means that the eastern side of the island is always a bit windier. When the winds are above 10 mph the surf on the eastern side (particularly at Orient) gets rough. If this is not for you check out the wind rates on the Weather Channel (channel 21), “Local on the 8s” segment or online check out the Weather Underground: http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/78866.html

Why Pointe Pirouette: My family fell in love with St. Maarten on our first visit more almost 30 years ago. The beaches, the shopping, the restaurants, the casinos, the nightlight, the water sports, over the years, we've done it all and after only a few short visits, we decided to purchase a winter home on the island. This was the first and only home we looked at, we fell in love with the villa and its location.
The Unique Benefits at this House: I have traveled extensively across Europe, North American and even Australia. I still love coming 'home' to St. Maarten.
