Our two bedroom, two bath, woodland retreat is only 11-years old, and offers peace and quiet on fabulous Gabriola Island, one of the world’s nicest island hideaways. Our cottage is not a commercial vacation rental; it is our second home, which are sharing so that others can enjoy the peace and quiet of Gabriola Island as much as we do.
This woodland home away from home is warm and cozy in the winter with its wood burning stove the centerpiece of the living room. In summer open the two front doors onto the deck and let woodland sounds and smells come into the house. The kitchen is wonderful to work in and has everything you’d ever need to cook gourmet meals. The dining room table sits six comfortably and pot lights with dimmers create the perfect ambiance. Or, sit in the nook area and look out onto the well stocked woodshed, a favorite haunt of a resident stag.
Tullamore Cottage is situated in a wonderful neighbourhood at the end of a no-thru road bordering onto forested acreage. The living room and dining room feature a cathedral ceiling that provides a picture perfect view of fir trees and abundant wildlife. A fabulous wood stove heats the whole house during the winter, while baseboard heaters can take the edge off during the spring and fall.
While summer and fall are wonderful times to visit Gabriola, don’t dismiss a winter visit. This is one of our favourite times to visit; when we can go for a crisp walk along deserted beaches and return to a blazing woodstove, a bowl of soup, and cozy down with a good book.
Tullamore Cottage is ideal for two couples as both bedrooms are enuite, but there is no third ‘family’ bathroom. Beds have memory foam mattresses and a choice of pillows to (hopefully) suit all personal preferences. There is no pull-out bed so the cottage sleeps four people only.
The cottage is not suited to children due to steep stairs, and an unguarded wood stove. We do however accept children over the age of 12 years. We do not accept pets and the property is non-smoking.
Gabriola Island uses well water and septic systems. Tullamore Cottage is very fortunate to enjoy an incredible 12 gallon per minute well providing beautiful drinking water, along with a high-end septic system. The cottage has never, ever, run short of water even during a dry summer.

The cottage is situated in one of the best neighbourhoods on the Island, and close to several beaches. Satellite images on our website will show you two of the closest beaches, one within walking distance via a beautiful forested trail, and the other just a few minutes by car (although we often walk to it using local short cuts).

Gabriola Golf and Country Club (excellent 9-holes)
Tullamore Cottage is situated in a wonderful neighbourhood at the end of a no-thru road bordering onto forested acreage. It sits in almost three-quarters of an acre of woodland.
The island is known for its many artisans, with a thriving cottage industry in pottery and other arts and crafts. There is a well-stocked, large grocery store, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs along with just about everything else needed for complete self-sufficiency.
Gabriola Island is incredible; the people are the friendliest you will find anywhere, the beaches range from amazing sandstone ledges which heat up at low tide in the summer and provide warm swimming later when the tide comes back in, to sandy swathes perfect for young children, and rocky beaches that are perfect for exploring the teeming tide pools.
Bald eagles are common here and often swoop right down in front of you, or peer at you from the tops of trees. Otters are curious creatures and it’s a regular occurrence to see one coming to shore with clams, oysters, a large fish, or simply to check you out.
The Island is a maze of woodland trails and several days can be spent wandering through the centre of the island. Artisans abound, so visiting potters and painters, weavers and quilters is a marvellous way to spend a day.
Gabriola has it all; when you’re here it has the feel of a remote island, but Nanaimo with its population of 138,000 and countless stores and huge malls, is just twenty minutes away by ferry. Nanaimo’s Port Theatre, a landmark on the city’s waterfront, offers over 250 events annually and is just across the road from where the ferry docks. You can walk on, stroll to the theatre see a great show and get the last ferry back to your secluded island hideaway.
Ferries run approximately every hour from 5:30am until 11:30pm everyday of the year to Nanaimo and take just 20-minutes – not even enough time to take in all the stunning views! Vancouver, on the mainland, is just 15 miles away using the regular float plane service, or take the leisurely super ferry from Nanaimo.
Gabriola Island is located in the Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and the mainland of BC, approximately 3 miles (5 km) east of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
Sometimes known as Petroglyph Island, a nickname acquired because of its wealth of ancient native stone carvings, Gabriola Island is one of the most enchanting of the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.
Gabriola's name is derived from Punta de Gaviota (Cape Seagull), the name given by the Spanish to the southeastern part of the island in 1791. This name was later corrupted to Gaviola and later to Gabriola. Other island names dating back to Spanish exploration of the Strait of Georgia include Descanso Bay and Malaspina Galleries.
In a pleasant rural setting of forested parks and quiet beaches, Gabriola’s residents enjoy a mild temperate climate, a relaxed lifestyle and a strong sense of community. Picturesque roads lead to sensational ocean views, and the sandstone shoreline can be walked almost indefinitely. The population is concentrated on the north and south ends of the island, with a friendly rivalry enjoyed between north and south islanders.
About the owner: We purchased Tullamore Cottage four years ago and enjoy visiting our second home as often as we can. In reality we often only get chance to visit for a few days a month. For this reason we recently decided to share our secret hideaway with friends and family, and people who have yet to become friends, who want to get away from the stresses of everyday life. Gabriola is a very special place, only a 20-minute ferry ride from the City of Nanaimo with its fabulous shopping and entertainment, yet a world away in terms of peace and quiet.
Mike is a writer and publisher and occasionally uses the cottage as a writer’s retreat – the perfect place to still all those outside voices and electronic interruptions. Sheila works at a major hospital in Victoria, B.C. as a medical imaging technologist. We have two adult sons, and two (soon to be three) grandchildren.
We love cooking so the kitchen at Tullamore Cottage is unlike any other vacation rental – it has everything you will need from a spice grinder to a food processer and liquidizer, a set of Lagostina pots and pans, top quality frying pans and all the other kitchen tools you’ll need. We like to entertain so there are cocktail glasses and a shaker, champagne flutes and an ice bucket. Help yourself to dozens of herbs and spices, salt and pepper and a bunch of other necessities. We have outdoor chairs and tables, a French boule set, mountain bikes in the pump house and a bunch of other stuff to make your stay more pleasurable.
Why the Owner Chose Gabriola Island: Tullamore Cottage is for those people looking for some peace and quiet. We bought it about four years ago as a retreat from our busy work lives. It is not the place to go if you want nightlife, or lots of attractions - on Gabriola you make your own fun. There are coffee shops and restaurants - not many - but what there are, are very good, especially the Woodfire Grill which serves THE best oven-fired pizzas and entrees - every bit as good as any fine-dining establishment in a major city.
When we are on the Island we like to go for lots of walks; our two favourites are Drumbeg Provincial Park and one we call Decourcy, although it doesn't really have a name. If you plan a visit to our home away from home we'll give you the inside scoop on how to get to all the good walks - and there are tons of them!
Mountain biking is something else we love to do and there are trails runing throughout the Island - in fact you can ride from one end of the island to the other on trails, only having to cross an occasional small road. We have two mountain bikes in the pump house for your use.
This is kayaking country and the waters around the island are clear and for most of the year calm. Kayaks can be rented in Silva Bay, a short drive from the cottage.
Another pastime, when we're feeling a little less energetic, is to visit the dozens, and dozens of artisans that call Gabriola home. There are two studio tours a year, but many artisans are open all year round and those that aren't are always happy to welcome you if you call ahead.
Wildlfe on the island is abundant and you will almost certainly see bald eagles, massive ravens, otters, seals, sea-lions, hawks and if you are very lucky dolphins and killer whales (Orcas).
Gabriola Island is a magical place and after a visit to Tullamore Cottage you will feel totally relaxed and rejuvenated.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: A few of things that made us fall in love with Tullamore Cottage include sitting by the wood stove in winter with a good book, and sometimes opening both front doors to let the outside in, while still feeling warm and cozy. The living room is surrounded by windows overlooking giant tree; sitting on one of our leather couches (great for afternoon naps by the way) simply watching the world - and by world, we mean nature - go by is a pleasure all to itself.
Walking the 707 (a huge natural public park in the centre of the island) in the snow is another favourite thing to do, although it snows infrequently on the island.
In summer a favourite spot is the bright blue adirondack chair on the front deck, especially in the evening when we are often visited by huge ravens flying through the trees, sometimes chasing an eagle, their wings making this amazing whumfp, whumfp sound - pure magic. Then later the tree frogs start their nightly chorus filling the forest with sound - then as if given a signal by a conductor, they all stop at once and everything is silent. A few minutes later they start a new set and the quiet is broken with a new peaceful, restful sound. During the day deer stroll through our property almost oblivious to the fact we are sitting there.
Meals taken at our picnic table are also wonderful, and barbecues are fun (we have a great BBQ for your use). Indoors we have a great kitchen - we love to cook and entertain so the kitchen is incredibly well stocked with every utensil, pot and pan you'll need to cook gourmet meals. Gabriola, has a wonderful butcher (sorry vegetarians) - be sure to visit him for awesome meat. We also have a bakery - Slow Rise Bakery's bread and scones are NOT to be missed, and oh Gabriola garlic is the best ever!
During the spring and summer on Saturdays there is a fabulous outdoor market selling local produce and masses of local made products. make sure you visit Birdman Shaun - you will see his birdhouses on some or our trees.
