Anchorage chalet description

Beautiful custom log home with three bedrooms (Sleeps 10 due to two double sofa beds in living room), two and a half bathrooms, and an infrared sauna.
Master bedroom features master bath, infrared sauna, and deck that feels like you are in a tree house.
Three stories, each with their own bathroom; handicap accessible 1st and 2nd floors only. Bruno stair lift from 1st to 2nd floors, and grab bars in lower two bathrooms.
Beautiful mountain views out huge windows and from three decks. This listing is located in the Southfork Area of Eagle River, Alaska, which is a suburban/rural part of Anchorage (20 miles north) off the Glenn Highway.

Wildlife and bird viewing opportunities include: Grizzly and black bear, moose, lynx, snowshoe hare, beaver, porcupine, squirrel, bald eagle, great horned owl, raven, magpie, blue jay, woodpecker, robin, black capped chickadee, pine grosbeak, spruce grouse, Bohemian waxwing, salmon and much more.

Mother moose with two twin calves just born in my neighbors backyard. Mother grizzly with 2 cubs moved through the subdivision last week.

Wildlife viewing opportunities include: Moose, grizzly and black bear, lynx, coyote, squirrel, snowshoe hare, porcupine, beaver, great horned owl, bald eagle, woodpecker, raven, magpie, plover, spruce grouse, robins, chickadee and more.

Southfork River Waterfall less than one mile from cabin, which has a king salmon run in July; Grizzly bears take advantage of this run, so be careful especially at night.

Responsible people in the neighborhood have bear proof trash cans or put out the trash the morning of pickup so the bears won't see humans as a food source. Residents respect the bears and give them the space to live and roam.

Cabin is next to Chugach State Park, and is surround by the Chugach Mountains; many of the peaks and ridges are visible from the cabin and its three decks.

This area is a hiker's paradise; use caution and carry bear spray and an air horn. We are highly forested and close to a river.

End of description.

Eagle River Nature Center 20 minute drive. Alaska

Native Heritage Museum 15 minute drive.

Anchorage Museum 30 minute drive, property is only 15 minutes from JBER and Tihatnu Commons Shopping Mall which includes Lowes, Olive Garden, Kohl's, Sports Authority, Best Buy, many other stores and a multi screen Imax theatre by Regal.

Arctic Valley Road runs to the top of a ski area which presents a panoramic view of the city. Eagle River Nature Center on Eagle River Road has stuffed exhibits of wildlife that inhabit the Eagle River valley and educational material on the geology of this area.

There was a bear mauling about 1 mile from the house last year. A young mother grizzly mauled a Southfork resident, and friend of mine after his dog came back to him and brought the bear back to him. The bear was shot and it was one of those situations that couldn't be helped. I have a grizzly bear protection kit that includes an airhorn, bear spray, bug dope and bear bells that you may use. I have been bluff charged three times without a scratch.

Two of them were nothing but juvenile grizzlies feeling their oats The third was a potential mauling situation, but I did the right thing and stood my ground.. My huskie mix dog Blackie chased and bit the young grizzly on his butt twice. It all happened within a split second. The bears do not go door to door looking for people, as my very fashionable San Francisco sister believes. In general they want nothing to do with us. It is always good to hike as a group and be aware of your surroundings. I love the bears but make no mistake about it. They are the apex predator, not you. They need their space and you should give it to them. This is not Jellystone Park with Yogi and Boo Boo. I used to do an e mail tree to report bear sightings for public safety reasons, but idiots from other areas used it as an opportunity to trespass on private property and get way too close to bears. If you trespass on private property and get too close to the bears, we will inform the village that you came from that their idiot is missing and to come pick you up.

Several police officers live within this area, and property and violent crime is low. Most of the residents in this are very familiar with hunting and weapons so criminals beware.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 96

About the owner: I built this home from the premiere kit manufactured in Okanagan .....B.C. I have lived here about 20 years and want to share Alaska's beauty and wildlife. I like living in this family neighborhood, yet so close to Alaska's beautiful wildlife.Chugach State Park is a stones throw away and it presents great hiking opportunities.

Why the Owner Chose Anchorage:
It was the Southfork and a river ran through it. Now it runs through me It courses through my veins. it will run through you on your first hike to the waterfall. This property is close to city services in Eagle River, JBER, Tihatnu Commons Mall with an IMAX theatre, Olive Garden, the new VA hospital, and the Alaska Native Cultural Center ; yet it remains a wilderness with access to spectacular scenery and wildlife in your backyard.

The Unique Benefits at this Chalet:
Wildlife and bird viewing opportunities include: Grizzly and black bear, moose, lynx, snowshoe hare, beaver, porcupine, squirrel, bald eagle, great horned owl, raven, magpie, blue jay, woodpecker, robin, black capped chickadee, pine grosbeak, spruce grouse, Boheminan waxwing and much more. King salmon run in nearby stream in the second and third weeks of July. You are close to civilization, yet close to a wilderness. There are grizzly bears in this area and you must respect them and give them space. In addition to mother moose with twin calves, I have seen coyotes, black bears, wolves and lynx, as well as many other forms of wildlife. Keep your game eye on and you might be surprised what you see. There is a hidden jewel in the Southfork. It is called Spirit Park. It is a mini park and has a half basketball court. It is on Elkhorn Drive off Hiland Road. It is a peaceful spot where local residents take their youngsters to be outside. I can not describe the feeling of serenity and peace this area brings.
