TRANI: Trani enjoys an ideal geographic position, being at the centre of the north Bari inland and the Apulian coast. It has the unique quality of being a famous tourist centre renowned both for its rich art heritage and for its sea (lovely and clean). Trani's Cathedral is perhaps the most beautiful and famous building in Apulian Romanesque style. The splendid scenario of its setting has certainly contributed to this reputation: a marvelous large square directly overlooking the sea. The façade is orientated towards the lovely Swabian castle The Castle of Trani , while the apses tower over the charming little fishing port.

Trani is encircled beautifulst archaeological situated cities and of remarkable historical and cultural importance: Bari (40 kilometers) with its Basilica of San Nicola, the archaeological zone of Canne della Battaglia (20 kilometers) where 2 August of the 16 A.C. of Hannibal Carthaginians destroyed the Roman army. Barletta (13 kilometers) with 12 kilometers of coast, its monuments like the Svevo castle, the Colossus "Eraclio" and the Wine cellar of the Disfida di Barletta (1503).

A lot very you use, document to you and illustrate to you from specialized tourist guides that they will accompany to you in detail on the place explaining what you will see. Regional gastronomy is fundamentally linked to two factors: its geographical shape and its historical affairs. In the case of Puglia, the flatness of the region and its extensive coastline has led the inhabitants to animal breeding, fishing, wheat, grape, and vegetable cultivation, as well as to plant fruit and olive trees.

Obviously the gastronomic culture that has emerged is based on these products. In the context of Italian customs, such a use of flour could only lead to the production of fresh pasta (the famous Apulian orecchiette but also strascenate, chiancarelle, troccoli, and so on). Obviously for their preparation, a whole range of sauces based on local products have also emerged, both from land and sea produce. The abundance of the latter especially, has favoured the creation of dishes based on blue fish, crustaceans and mollusks, some traditionally eaten raw. Animal breeding, mainly of sheep, has led to the traditional simple cuisine (skewered meat) or more elaborate, like the gnemerìidde based on lamb's innards. Animal rearing also led to dairy farming and the production of milk products and cheese from the cow (mozzarella and fiordilatte) and sheep (ricotta, "strong ricotta," cacioricotta).

Last, but not least, an important element of Apulian food is the sweets, above all connected with religious occasions, (pèttue or zèppole, taralli, cartellate). The typical cookery of Trani and district is inserted in this regional context: "country" cookery where vegetables and countryside herbs have pride of place, the fragrance of the cold pressed olive oil, the intense aroma of Mediterranean spices, the tastiness of the Adriatic fish and the meats from the pastures of the Murges. It is a sober, wholesome and simple world, but good and appetizing, which is well worth exploring. All these God-given gifts are washed down with full-bodied wines, including the outstanding Castel del Monte Doc (white, rosé, and red), the formidable Castel del Monte Reserve, the Trani Doc Muscat (in the natural sweet and raisin wine versions), and the excellent sparkling wines made from the aromatic white wines produced in the area. To complete the extraordinary range of good food and drink is the traditional hospitality of the people of this magnificent land.

It offers all comodities of a modern flat, and Antonio is a very reliable and helpful owner. The holiday flat is situated in the outskirts of Trani amidst a living area with all necessary shops with short ways into the beautiful agricultural environment as well as the city of Trani.

    • We had the best time in Trani. We used it as a base for visiting the Puglia region. It is the perfect place to stay. It has the nicest little Port with wonderful restaurants and the people were so very nice. Antonio and his wife are lovely people who greeted us so warmly. Their apartment is lovely! We wish we had warmer weather so we could have taken more advantage of the outdoor areas which are so pretty. The apartment has everything you could need and the location is perfect. It is easy to get to from SS16. Supermarkets are nearby as are Panneteria's and only 1 KM from the Port. The 2 bedrooms are very comfortable and are perfect for a good nights sleep! The shower has lots of nice warm water! The people in the building were also very friendly. There is secure parking included. We have no compaints and would stay with Antonio and Cinzia again!

    • My brother and I enjoyed a week at "Il Frutteto" in May 2009. Antonio met us with a beautiful basket of local foods and wine. The apartment was spacious, bright, clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed the gardens front and back and the satellite TV. From lovely Trani, we travelled easily to Gargano (including San Giovanni Rotondo); Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Martina Franca; and Lecce and Gallipoli. In Trani we especially enjoyed the centro storico, the sublime cathedral (where we went to Mass on Easter Sunday), and the Good Friday procession. I'd recommend "Il Frutteto" to any travellers.
