Aix en Provence house description
Aix en Provence was founded by the Romans, and has ever since been a crossroads for those traveling from Italy to Spain and from the Cote d'Azur to Paris.
Enjoy the opportunity to stroll up and down the Cours Mirabeau, to sip a coffee in a sidewalk cafe while admiring the 17th and 18th century buildings lining the streets, to rub shoulders with the exuberant students, to shop in one of the liveliest markets in Provence, to sample the wonderful cuisine in some of the hundreds of restaurants in the city, or to taste the wine in certain of the wine-producing properties in the region.
Then return to the house and sit in the shade of a tall fig tree on the front terrace while enjoying a glass of local wine and a plate of cheese and pate. Or sunbathe in the back garden. The house is spacious, tastefully furnished, well-insulated with marble bathrooms, Italian tile throughout, overhead beams, and large built-in cupboards.
It has three roomy bedrooms, one with two single beds, one with a queen-size bed, and the other one with a double bed. There are two bathrooms, one of them en suite. The two larger bedrooms have French doors opening on to the back garden. The living room opens onto the dining room with an adjoining kitchen, both of which have French doors leading to the front terrace. It is light and bright and was recently completely redone. The environment is lovely.
The owner speaks both French and English, and can provide additional information.

Wonderful city and country life in Provence
Wonderful city and country life in Provence
Our family was looking for a sabbatical home in Aix-en-Provence. We preferred to be in a house and in a quiet neighborhood, if possible on the outskirts of town in order to get a countryside feel. We were very lucky to find this property, and our stay turned out to be more wonderful than we anticipated. The photos and descriptions provided on the website are very accurate. The rooms, including the kitchen, are spacious and furnished with good taste. We were able to make it our home from day one as the house is well equipped and maintained. The floor plan is well conceived. There are two large terraces on the property with garden furniture, and we spent a lot of time outdoors, eating and entertaining under the fig tree. The kitchen fireplace was ideal in the winter. The owner, Kathleen, is wonderful. She responded to our inquiry promptly and gave us a lot of information regarding the house and settling in Provence. She is very pleasant, discreet, and helpful. She was prompt to get repairs done when something needed servicing. She became a dear friend. The location is wonderful because we were on one of the most beautiful hills overlooking the city, with tall trees, large properties, and trails that allow you to go for a walk without even taking a car. And yet this country setting is only 2 miles from downtown. Down the hill are shops (supermarket, pharmacy, doctors' offices), and city buses service the area. Our children went to school into town only two miles from our house and from the gorgeous farmer's markets Aix-en-Provence is known for. The city is fabulous with its narrow streets, restaurants, and many festivals and cultural activities it offers. There are many sites to visit around the city, with must-see villages nearby, and cities like Arles, Avignon, Cassis, and beaches that are only within a 45 minute drive. Our year in Provence was wonderful, and we miss it a lot! We highly recommend the property, its charm and beauty.

We stayed here for all of July, 2012 and it was delightful. The terrace is beautiful, quiet, and a perfect place to eat meals, enjoy a glass of Rose and cool off from the heat of the city. The house is out in the country, but very close to Aix, a total escape. The house is in good condition and charming. The owner, Kathleen, could not have been nicer. We enjoyed our month in paradise and would return in a heart beat.

Dear Kathleen; We enjoyed the house, it suited our needs nicely. Did have trouble finding it, a little tricky around Aix in general, was dark when we arrived, we were hungry, then Voila? here is Brad home right behind us and took the girls into town for food for us. We were most grateful. The setting of your home is lovely, I'm sure it has many tales to tell. I was quite peaceful at the little table under the fig tree, and made that space my own. Thank you for allowing Amy the final day there, as it was not planned ahead of time but made it nice for her plans. Your son was very gracious. Thank you again Kathleen, Terry Cotterell and Paul Crossfield

My brother, my best friend and I stayed at this lovely home for two weeks in August and enjoyed the solitude, peace and tranquility that the location afforded us. It seems remote, but you can be in Aix in about 5-10 minutes. While we traveled around to various cities close by, it was always a treat to come back home to "our own beds" at night. We truly enjoyed our stay and the owner, Kathleen made herself available to assist us if needed. This is truly a beautiful part of France and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get away from it all.

Our 2 week stay in May, 2007 was delightful. The apartment looks better than the pictures - very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The owner is gracious and helpful. I certainly recommend this property and would definitely stay here again.

About the owner: I am an American-born lady originally from Pennsylvania, but I have spent well over half my life in France, several years in Paris but most in Provence. I first came to Aix at the age of 19 on my junior year abroad. Within an hour of my arrival, I was euphoric, totally in love with the place. The town and surroundings are beautiful with great weather most of the year (300 days of sunshine). It has lovely medieval, 17th, and 18th century architecture giving it a historic dimension of which one is always conscious. And at the same time it possesses a large student population making it a lively place for young people. I am a recently retired university English teacher having spent most of my career at the university here in Aix. I have two French sons, one of whom lives in Aix and the other one in San Diego. We are a bi-cultural family and love both countries.
Why the Owner Chose Aix en Provence:
Listings #5958 and #5956 concern the spacious gate house on the property. I occupy the main house (listing #5952) most of the year, but spend part of the winter in Florida during which I rent it out at a discount. The property is located in one of the loveliest neighborhoods in the town, and the location is one of the best features. It is in a quiet, semi-country area with beautiful, Provencal vegetation, but only 2 miles from the Cours Mirabeau, which is the Champs Elysees of Aix and one of the most famous boulevards in France.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The apartment is only 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the top of the Cours Mirabeau, so it is quite close to town. The city proper begins just 565 meters from the property and there is frequent bus service just a hunded and 50 meters further. You can walk to the Cours Mirabeau in 30 to 35 minutes. Actually the location is one of the best features of the property, as it is on the northeast side of town, which has been preserved. Aix has grown from a population of 50,000 people in 1950 to 145,000 just 60 years later. There has been a lot of development to the north, south, and west. but the east and northeast have been spared. We have the advantage of living practically in the city, but in a semi-country setting. The property is ideal for families or for several people traveling together, who have different preferences and needs but only one car. One can walk into town in a half hour or else take the bus (frequent service at about 700 meters from the property). Early risers can go into town early and have breakfast in an outdoor cafe and visit the market, and those who prefer to sleep late can join them later for lunch. Those who seek the bustle of the town have immediate and frequent access, whereas others who prefer sitting peacefully on the terrace under the fig tree and sipping wine can do so when they wish. It allows for flexibility. Teenagers can rub shoulders with the lively student population in town, while parents can relax without being obliged to drive long distances to pick them up afterwards. And there are wonderful possibilities for walks from the property for those who love nature. PLease note that there is a wonderful discount for those who stay 2 weeks or longer The first week costs 1500 euros, two weeks cost 2700 (1350 per week), and the total for four weeks is 4500 euros (1125 euros a week as opposed to 1500). And the long-term, low season rate (minimum 6 months) is only 1950 per month (475 euros per week).
