Located in the heart of the Bywater, one of America's most interesting and inspiring neighborhoods.
Colorful, funky, hip Bywater neighborhood. Everything blooming, you can hear the birds in the morning (and the neighborhood chickens).
Lots of musicians, artists, professionals and neighborhood folks. Everyone says hi. It's a great neighborhood.
House very well located in the Bywater. It's set back from the sidewalk and there are steps up to the porch with lots of trees, so it feels private, yet
very close to everything... Satsuma, Maurpas Foods, Suis Generis, Elizabeth's, Bootys, The Country Club, Oxalis, Frady's, Markeys, Pizza Delicious, Piety Snowballs, the Joint, Baccanal, and lots more.
Easy street parking, nice neighbors, etc. Great block, Dauphine between Piety and Desire.
The new and beautiful Crescent Park and Markey Park are both within a 5 min walk.
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: I am a professional artist and educator based in New Orleans. I grew up in the midwest and lived on the West Coast for about 15 years before moving to New Orleans.
I travel a great deal for teaching and for projects, which I love. I'm a public artist specializing in architectural mosaics and community-based art. I have been doing this kind of work for almost 25 years through my company True Mosaic Studio and more recently through my organization, The Global Mosaic Project. Over the past several years I have been working in Haiti doing a series of mosaic projects for a hospital built by public health organization Partners In Health. I am the Director of the mosaic program for a non-profit in Jacmel, Haiti called Art Creation Foundation For Children.
I have worked on projects in Europe, South America, Central America, Haiti and Africa.
I love New Orleans and happy to call it my home base.
I have a studio here where I teach mosaics and create work for clients and public spaces. I have facilitated several community and public mosaic projects in town and am currently working on a mosaic facade for my studio in the Marigny.
Here is an excerpt from my bio:
Through her production studio, True Mosaics Studio, True has created large-scale projects for public spaces, hospitals, and commercial and residential spaces for almost 25 years. Laurel teaches and lectures internationally and facilitates community-based projects through her organization the Global Mosaic Project. She has trained thousands of project participants, students and volunteers, and provides professional development training to artists and young entrepreneurs.
I am easily google-able.
Why the Owner Chose Marigny-Bywater: I fell in love with New Orleans on a visit in 1997 and spent the next few years visiting as often as I could. I started teaching here in 2003 and bought my house in 2006. I co-founded a mosaic education and resource center in the Bay Area in 2005 and split my time between Oakland and New Orleans for several years before making Nola my primary home. No matter where I travel, from Paris to Zanzibar to Haiti, I always love coming home to New Orleans.
The Unique Benefits at this House: I love the Bywater neighborhood for its artistic, eclectic vibe. It is like no other neighborhood. My house is a lovely, strong and solid shotgun double built in 1904. Old world charm with modern conveniences. I live on one side and rent out the other side. I love the street, it is quiet and lovely with crepe myrtles and lush, tropical foliage.
