Perfect for Our Family Vacation!
Perfect for Our Family Vacation!
Our family of five (two parents, three young adult children) had a wonderful stay at the Pond House. It was well supplied with what we needed and the addition of the guest house meant we could get away from each other when necessary. The nearby town of Pahoa has some good restaurants and also a market (we cooked a lot of our own meals) and other services. The Kapoho Tide Pools are only steps away from the house, so you can have an adventure without driving anywhere. The setting of the house is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. The owners obviously take pride in the property and they were also extremely kind to us when we needed some extra help.

Owner response: It is always our desire to try and help our guests have a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay at our 'Pond House" and learn a little more about Hawaii while they are here. We enjoy talking story about Hawaii and what Hawaii has to offer in it's natural beauty and local culture. Whether it be swimming with the tropical fish in the tide pools a few steps away, a guided trip to our nearby orchid and palm nursery, experiencing Volcano National Park activity or just laying back, on the daybed on the screened lanai feeling the tropical breeze, guests have gone home with a smile. We live five minutes away, therefore close enough to be helpful if needed and yet far enough away to give our guests the privacy they want in a cottage by the ocean. Each guest is special to us and it is our pleasure to be able to share our aloha with them. Mahalo (thank you) for thinking of us.
Peaceful Hawaii Heaven

This was such a peaceful, relaxing place to stay. I felt like we had stepped back in time. Very private with beautiful landscaping...loved the orchids. We loved lounging on the screened lanai at night and listening to the frogs. I enjoyed the house geckos, which always seemed interested in what I was doing, and kept the place bug free. This may be a problem for people who don't like to share a place with critters. It is only a very short walk down a beautiful path to a huge Wai'opae pond. The snorkeling is excellent. In the morning I had this pond all to myself. It doesn't get any better than this. We had a hard time leaving here to explore other places. The closest town, Pahoa, had several good restaurants, a market and drug store. We enjoyed sight seeing along highway 137 south. Ahalanui Warm Spring is a great place to swim (thermally heated). At roads end is a nice hike through the lava to a new black sand beach. You can also see steam rising in the distance from where the current eruption is hitting the ocean. The owner, Jan, was very nice and gave us a tour of her wonderful orchid farm. We would love to stay here again.

Heaven Hawaiian Style

This is where I want to be. We love the pond house. (We've stayed here 5 times!) A very peaceful home surrounded by orchids and palms and only a few steps to the lagoon. The pictures are accurate but it's better in person. Comfortable furnishings and Hawaiian style decor with all you need. Lots of books on the area and Hawaiian music to listen to. Great snorkeling a few steps away. We love eating at the Kalapana Cafe at the end of the road and all the farmers markets and the volcano. Jan is a great hostess and does a wonderful job creating a very special place. Yes, I would recommend this property to a friend or relative.

Everything is great! Clean rooms, snorkeling gears, walking distance to tide pools. The owners are very helpful when you need something likes BBQ charcoals, etc. They also suggested us to visit their local farmer market. We found poke bowl there, love it and you should try it! Jan gave us beautiful orchids as a special wedding gift, we love it and thank you!!!! We recommend this place to everyone who visit the Hilo side!!!

if you want a place to stay that is reminescent of "old hawaii' then this is the place. immediately the cottage said to us "welcome home". the cottage was clean, comfortable and with all the modern amenities, yet felt like the old plantation home that my grandparents lived in kahuku, hawaii. jan was a welcoming hostess who truly radiated the kama aina spirit. my husband, jan and i talked story through the evening sharing stories of working the land. wonderful place for multiple families with children of various ages as the ponds are calm and inviting. trying to convince my sisters and their families to have a mini family reunion here. my family and i will definitely be returning.

It has always been a pleasure to stay at the Pond's house. Actually, we found the place so wonderful that we came there several times all the way from Paris France. Many friends of ours have been staying there as well with great pleasure. The place makes you feel relax and quiet, the environment is beautiful and poetic. You can hear the calming sound of the sea from the lanai. Having breakfast there, surrounded by palm trees is a pure delight. The house itself is pleasant and confortable. The owners know everything about the Hawaians, their culture and habits. They are the most welcoming persons I know. They are very good advisers about activities you may wish to practice, or any good spots in the island. The lagoon is a three minutes walk from the property, and there is a marvellous hot pond 7 minutes by car - nice hot water with waves coming from the sea renewing and refreshing the pool . You can get there any time you want, specially at the end of the day, when tired or stressed...Also a sheer delight. To go shopping or to restaurants, you need to go to the village (Pahoa), which is nice and holds a popular and animated market on Sundays. I just love buying goodies there! Besides the town of Hilo (the administrative capital) is not that far. The impressive park with the volcanoes is very accessible from this property. My only dislike is about mosquitoes and their bites, they are small and quick, and they love you... l warmly recommend this vacation rental

Owner response: A recent guest at the 'Pond House' asked me if I ever had guests stay here that I would not rent to again. I thought about their question, thought about the many guests that have come to stay here over the eighteen years that I have had a vacation rental, and said, “ I have been extremely lucky”! Not only have people who come to vacation here been very nice people but many have become friends. We have shared the same interests of nature, simple yet inviting and comfortable accommodation, and the love of local culture. 'The Pond House' is like a place of 'coming together' for people who stay here. Many guests tell me they feel the peace and quiet of 'The Pond House', of nature's beauty, of Kapoho and of Hawaii. I feel very fortunate to be able to share this 'aloha' via the 'Pond House'. As for the mosquitos...I always say,” This is the tropics, it comes with the beautiful nature that surrounds us in Hawaii'. “ While the little' mossies', as in many places, mostly come out in late afternoon for a few hours... the screened- in lanai creates a wonderful room to keep the 'mossies' outside and outdoor living inside, to enjoy nature in peace and harmony. A very warm mahalo to Claudine L's family, for writing about their memories of staying here many times over the years, coming all the way from Paris France. You came as guests and left as friends. Aloha, Jan
