Orient house description

Orient is located at the very end of the North Fork of Long Island, surrounded by water on all sides. It was settled in 1640. It has been a choice vacation location for the New York metro area for generations. Is does not have the glamor and glitz of the Hamptons but it is ideally suited for a family that wants to relax and enjoy this lovely community.
This is a family place, near but not directly on the water. No worry about kids falling off a dock. Several beaches are close by. Upgraded this spring the house is in pristine condition, including central air, three full baths, modern kitchen, and three bedrooms plus a sleeping porch with two beds. Wi-Fi. Internet. Smart TV.

Nearby towns, with excellent restaurants, are Greenport, Peconic, Southold, and Riverhead. Direct daily bus service (Hampton Jitney) to mid-town Manhattan. Direct ferry service from Orient Point to New London, CT and the near-by gaming facilities.

Summer programs for children are available.

Orient is at the very end of Long Island's North Fork, an area increasingly known for fine wineries, and is surrounded by the Long Island Sound, Orient Bay, and Gardiner's Bay. The area is quite different from the Hamptons that are situated on the South Fork which are more high end and a place where celebrities gather. The Oysterponds Historical Society is a local museum with artifacts from Orient's earlier years, especially a large collection of Indian items. The Orient Yacht Club provides sailing lessons and competitions for young people who are going to be around for a good portion of the summer. Orient Point State Park is about 5 miles to the east and is adjacent to the landing facilities for the Cross Sound Ferry. The State Park features swimming, hiking, outdoor cooking, a playground, hiking, fishing and bird-watching. For those wanting to visit the gaming casinos in Connecticut, the ferry provides a high-speed service that makes several round trips each day (no cars on the high-speed ferry that connects with a bus that runs to the two casinos). Regular ferries that can accommodate cars run every hour; the ferry runs to New London, CT. The Hampton Jitney runs direct bus service from Greenport (4 miles away) to mid-town Manhattan several times a day. The Long Island Rail Road also runs a few trains on the weekends to Greenport. Greenport has developed a lot in recent years and now boasts a number of good restaurants and many stores. There are various water-themed festivals throughout the summer. Small towns that are west of Orient (towards New York City), such as Southold, Peconic, Mattituck, and Riverhead all have good restaurants and places to shop.

          Owner info

          Year Purchased: 1970

About the owner: My wife, Nancy, and I have been going to Orient for many years. I am now retired from various government service posts, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, but remain very active in our hometown of Knoxville, TN. Nancy was an elementary school teacher and headmistress of a Montessori School in Washington, DC. Both Nancy and I grew up on Long Island, much closer to Orient than Tennessee! We have lived in Chicago, upstate New York, and Washington, DC but have always returned to Orient as frequently as we could. We also spent a significant amount of time in the Republic of Georgia (former Soviet Union) helping launch the Georgian Institute of Public Administration in the aftermath of their independence from Russia. We have two children--a boy and a girl--who are now quite grown and are sending their kids off to college last year and this year. Our son is an attorney in Nashville and our daughter teaches school in Indianapolis.

          Why the Owner Chose Orient:
My parent built this home in 1970 as their retirement locale. Regrettably my father died less than two years after they moved in but my mother lived there for another 24 years. The home has always been part of our family and we expect our tenants to respect its history and the place it has occupied in our lives. We expect our children will continue the Orient tradition when we are no longer around.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is just a comfortable and very well maintained property that received a lot of upgrades this past spring. The house has never looked better, if truth be told.
