Why the Owner Chose Ballinskelligs

We first saw this house in 1998 on a visit to Ireland and were overwhelmed by the spectacular view. It belonged to a cousin of Peter's mother and when he passed away we purchased it and renovated it with lots of help from other cousins living nearby.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Besides the proximity of one of the best golf courses in Ireland, Waterville Links, we enjoy the beach in Ballinskelligs, hikes around the countryside and the quiet, peaceful beauty on all sides.

Owner's Map of Ballinskelligs

We are New Jersey natives with Irish, Scottish and English roots. Peter is a freelance writer and photographer and Daphne just completed a master's degree in Irish Studies at New York University. We have two grown children, Patrick and Casey.

A wonderful 10-day-stay in a cosy Farmhouse

Guest: mijoka (Darmstadt, Germany)
Date of Stay: 08/14/11 Review Submitted: 09/13/11

We enjoyed a well equipped house, well situated in beautiful surroundings and wonderful view. The local blue flag beach at Ballinskelligs is just a 10 minute ride away and one of Ireland`s most beautiful and best fitted. Do not miss the nice little beach cafe beneath the car park, with a little play area for the kids. Good food is available at Cable O`Leary`s Pub just above the beach. Our only house neighbours were 50 very sympathetic sheep, some people would wish such at home ... If you need three bedrooms you should be aware that in one there is the boiler installed which releases sounds of water dripping and running all around the clock. The kitchen is heated with open fire run with turf - we loved that. The reason four only four but five stars is that erverything could have been a wee bit cleaner and we definetely missed a vacuum cleaner. Enyoy your stay, we really did!

Tig John: An Excellent Choice!

Beautiful views, great expanses to greet you every morning. Lots to do in the area and easy access to glorious beaches and inlets, ruins, etc., but the house is so cozy sometimes you just want to sit with tea and a good book in the well-appointed kitchen. The beds are extremely comfortable and it's ultra quiet so you'll catch up on your sleep. The house is sparkling clean, instructions are clear, and there are lots of suggestions for activities. Eileen and company are most informative and helpful if you should need anything. Nearby towns and villages have everything you should need and people are very friendly. Almost every pub has a homemade soup of the day you can make a meal out of. Call to reserve room on the boat to Skellig Michael. Next time I go I will arrange to have a bike. This is a wonderful part of Ireland and I would recommend it to anyone. What a treasure!

amazing kerry getaway

Guest: Jamie (Dublin, Ireland/New York, USA)
Date of Stay: 04/15/11 Review Submitted: 04/20/11

We had a fantastic time in Killurly. The house (and its views) were beautiful, the turf fires smelled amazing, and the weather was perfect. We hiked around Killarney National Park, drove the ring, saw Valentia and Dingle, and made it out to Skellig Michael, all within easy reach of Killurly. Also hit up a couple of pubs in Cahersiveen, most notably The Anchor (great people, live music, and a turf fire burning all night). Really, we could not have asked for a better weekend getaway. Peter and Daphne's home was beautiful, comfortable, and sparkling clean thanks to the neighbors who look after the house, and are easily reached by cell phone with questions or requests. We'll definitely be coming back.

Owner response:Thanks, Jamie. We're so glad you and your friends were able to see and do many of the things that make this corner of Ireland so wonderful. Daphne and Peter

Peter and Daphne's Farmhouse

Guest: Professor Lobo (New Hampster)
Date of Stay: 11/01/09 Review Submitted: 11/28/10

You read about places like this in the NY Times Travel Section -- places that your feel you will never come across or be your fate. But it is your fate right here at Peter and Daphne's farm house. The sun shone most everyday on Killurly -- also on Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, Waterville, and Caherciveen. The high-light of our journey was the trip to Skellig Michael. We climbed all the way to the top! The ancient monastery, the guide's information, and the views were just splendid. We drove around the Beara Pennisula and visted the Staigue Fort to see more ancient stone ruins and the pubs in Port Magee. Then on down to Skibbereen, where the newly-opened Heritage Center features an exhibit on the potato famine -- very worthwhile. Everything here seems delightful -- the magnificent views, the flowering season, the Quietude and ocean all around. It was swell (and not just the ocean!). But be careful of the roads -- much different than in the good ole USA, they lack shoulders. May 30-June 6, 2009

AN amazing and glorious week in Ballinskelligs!!!

Guest: Kathy (Basking Ridge NJ USA)
Date of Stay: 06/19/09 Review Submitted: 10/27/10

Our stay here has been quite fabulous. The views, the sheep, Billy and wonderful weather have all contributed. This is a quiet little piece of heaven. We have been all over "The Ring" and all over this magnificent area -- Valentia Island down by the lighthouse and up to Killarney and everything in between...the purple heather in Kenmare, lovely little bushes...The Bridge Bar (but the locals seem to be at Fisherman's Wharf)...lots of pub and church stops...and even the 11th hole on Waterville Links -- now there is a challenge for you! Thanks Pete and Daphne!!!!!!!!!!!! 26 June 2009 Kathy, John, Katherine , Jenny

Thank you so much for the use of your lovely home; we greatly enjoyed our stay here in Ireland. The views and the scenery are wonderful! We loved St. Finian's Bay beach and walking around the town. The people here are all extremely friendly. We enjoyed dinner at The Moorings in Portmagee (although more expensive). We also loved the sheep and climbed the hill behind the house, wonderful views!

Such a wonderful cottage - the most comfortable, cozy and lovely home to spend our short time in Kerry. We not only fell in love with the house but also with this part of Ireland (especially the mountains, which were simply stunning at this time of year, though I suspect they are pretty spectacular at any). The owner and his family have also been particularly kind and helpful, making us feel genuinely welcome. We will definitely return.
