We vacationed over the Christmas Holidays in this lovely spot with our two Sons and their significant others. Here is my take away: 1. The setting is truly magnificent and private. We enjoyed cocktails while watching the glorious sunset each and every evening of our stay. 2. On Old Makena Road….a quiet two lane country road. Walk one way 50 yards and you reach a charming old Church….50 yards the other way and you are at lovely Makena Landing (not really a landing….a small public beach). If you are looking to extend your walk it is a relatively easy hike to the Wailea resorts up the coast or Big Beach down the Coast. 3. Drive a bit further to La Perouse Bay through the last Maui lava flow fields of the late 1700s and take a hike even further into the past. Spectacular. 4. Hit a multitude of gourmet dining options all within a 10 minute drive or less. 5. Better yet….after cocktails put something on the barbie and enjoy the stars like those of us who live an urban setting seldom observe. Or stay at the lovely resorts of Wailea and fight the crowds and pay three times the price or more for 3 hotel rooms. Bottom line….if you are seeking a taste of old Hawaii rather than modern resort Hawaii this is your kind of place. The Island is small enough that day trips to Lahaina….or the road to Hana….are easily doable. Watch the whales….hike the trails to waterfalls….or just sit on your private piece of paradise and look out to sea. If you get bored and want the crowds (by the way even over the Holidays Maui does not feel crowded…except at the resorts) there are public access points and lovely walking paths along the beachfront that pass in front of all the Wailea resorts. Bottom bottom line….when we did venture out to see the masses on their wall to wall resort chaises….we could not wait to get back to the magic of this private piece of paradise. Enjoy.

If you want to wake up to the ocean under moonlight anywhere on Earth this home provides it all. Enjoying breakfast with my family and seeing that spectacular view. I take it everywhere with me now. Thank you for an incredible family experience. This is new old Hawaii at her finest. This treasure is special. Read the history on the family property and how it was developed. Watching our kids and grandkids talking to turtles and seeing them swimming from the beach, while holding hands on that beach and being grateful for 45 years of blue sapphire memories. We were married on Oahu during my r&r in 1968 and made this our gift to our family. This is an out of the way place for solitude as well. There is no bad beach on Maui and the one around the corner is exquisite ! Stay toward the center of the beach if you're swimming or you run into snorklers and rocks. One day of sun for every three days of sightseeing will save your skin. Use sunscreen. Lots of it ! Convenient to all resorts yet removed from anything commercial. We love it S.J. You've got to go Mama's Fish House. Make a reservation and bring a couple of hundred bucks.

This place was the most magical, wonderful place we have ever stayed in. Although pricier than any vacation we have taken in the past, it did not disappoint. It was worth every penny spent to get to stay here. Although the house was a bit on the older side, it didn't matter. It was so well equipped. We didn't need anything! The view was spectacular. The turtles came up every night, we also watched them feed off the rocks across the way. The neighbors dogs ate dinner with us outside every night. We walked right up the street to the most beautiful and perfect beach. The kids had so much to do. There were water shoes, and snorkel gear available to us. We had a small issue with the disposal and the property managers came right away. We would love to stay again someday. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful property with us. We have so many memories and wonderful pictures to remember it by.

It's always with great reluctance that I write a favorable review for one of the many properties we've stayed at during our 15 years of summer vacations on most of the Hawaiian Islands. I want to keep them a secret!!! But it's important that the property owners who make our vacations great by allowing us to stay in their homes get their proper recognition. Makena Makai is a great place! Swimming, snorkeling, turtle watching, fishing, great golf nearby, SUPing, runs along the resort coast (I couldn't help but smirk while jogging along the path in front of the Grand Wailea, knowing I was paying a FRACTION of what those folks were paying (per room) for a MUCH better place). The house easily accommodated our family of 6. It's clean and well stocked. Being able to bbq on the lanai, enjoy your wine while watching the sunset is always a great experience. Great place! - So go for it - but NOT when I want to book it again! :)

It just doesn't get any better than this! The house offers amazing views from all directions. The snorkeling and tide pools just steps from the back door is outstanding. We were swimming with the turtles the day we arrived. The sunrises and sunsets are truly stunning. We could go on and on but the best advice we can offer is: Rent this house!!!!!! Unless you experience it for yourself, you'll never experience a more private and beautiful piece of paradise.

SelfishlyI hate to share this gem. This ocean front house comes with incredible views at any moment. We enjoy incredible sunrises and stunning sunsets. During the whale migration season, you can sit in the backyard and watch the whales breech. Every morning my father, son and I explore the tide pool. Everyday is an adventure. It is perfect for relaxing and easy to venture out for more activity. We have surfed at Kehei, zip lined at Pii Holo ranch amongst other activities. Without even venturing out you can snorkel with the fish and turtles right in front of the house. This is a quiet neighborhood so if you are looking for a party place, don't come here. The front room is large and perfect for families. Everything you need is there to eat in: microwave oven, refrigerator, stove, oven, and BBQ for grilling. The outside table is perfect for sunset meals. However, there are so many great local places to eat too that its hard to decide. The house is very clean and well maintained. The owners are great and the rental experience is a breeze. I absolutely recommend this property. We have gone for 3 years and plan to return for years to come.

Our time at Makena Makai was priceless! We spent 10 days to celebrate our 10th anniversary and boy, did we pick well! The home is well appointed and very comfortable - the pictures do a great job of conveying what a lovely place this is. The location is perfect in a way that cannot be described - an unbelievable sunset spot (we have the 350+ sunset picture to prove it) with access to some of the best snorkeling around. You know it's a perfect vacation spot when over half way through your stay, you look at one another and ask, "Will we regret not going out more?" After grocery shopping, our time was spent hanging out at the house, watching the beautiful surf and sunsets, cooking in kitchen that was very well equipped and feeling as comfortable as we would at home. Many thanks to the owners for sharing their lovely home with us. We can't wait to plan a trip to return!

We've stayed all over Maui on previous trips and had noted this home on a previous trip while visitig the Congregational church and from the water while snorkeling in turtleville around Makena, so we had an idea it was an ideal location - it has an old Hawaii aloha feel by location and setting. When we found the home as a rental on VRBO we knew it was a gem. Our week long stay far surpassed our expectations. The home is in a quiet pristine setting - every window view is a postcard picture - outside there are many comfortable areas to take it all in - a lovely garden, outdoor furniture, and dining patio that overlooks the broken surf - the waves are broken by a rocky fingered peninsula that somehow supports three trees - it provides a small wonderland for adventuring right at your doorstep - this creates a gentle bay that is easy to swim and snorkel in - we did so at least twice a day - the water is warm and clear with may tropical fish and abundant green sea turtles - the coral reefs within Makena coastline are as clear and vibrant as on Molokini - you can easily swim to Makena landing and even out to five graves/five caves if you are a capable swimmer from the home. You can easily walk to several beaches, a wetland bird sanctuary, tidepools...all are incredible areas just a stone's throw from the megaresorts and so rarely explored by other tourists - I felt like we had the best of Hawaii all to ourselves. We had daily entertainment from grey whales - tailslapping, breeching, and you could even hear them singing while snorkeling along the coastline. Sublime! Besides the incredible flora and fauna - we had jumbo bullfrogs and gecko singing every night - the home was more than adequate, furnishings/bedding/mattresses very comfortable, kitchen was well-equipped, grill in working order, electronics and wi-fi accessible, lots of water toys...rooms and accommodations were exactly as billed on the website, the key was location - this is a family vacation home and the home's soul has the feel of love and heritage that you don't get in an overthetop resort. We plan on returning annually as long as this home is available!

This home is just that, a home poised right on the coast of paradise. We have stayed at Makena before, but this house provides a amazing experience to really feel like you have a residence on the island. The house is both convenient and private, both characteristics we look for when we travel to Maui. Arrangements and arrival were made very easy and slipping into vacation time was simple. The home is well stocked, clean and well maintained. Of the Makena properties we have stayed at, this home is closest to what I would like to have if I moved to the island. The photos shown in this listing are quite accurate and the views from the windows better than what you see in the photos. If you like snorkelling, there are many great place within a few minutes of the house. If you like privacy, the location relative to other residence makes this house a cut above other rentals on the same road. The location in Makena and this home made our trip a tough one to end.

While preparing for our 4th trip to this heavenly house in Makena, I thought it only appropriate that I publicly offer a thousand 'Thanks' to the owner for preserving her childhood home in such wonderful condition and especially for allowing us to call it 'home' for a couple of weeks a year ! The house is very comfortable and extremely well stocked. Three bedrooms and three baths means there is plenty of space for everyone. The grounds are gorgeous with lots of outdoor seating and easy access to the water. There is no better location on Maui than this little dead-end road and this house in Makena - providing that you want to be ocean front and Not surrounded by hundreds of people. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting here in the back yard and watching dozens of humpback whales in the ocean in front of you. I’m convinced that the best snorkeling spot on Maui is in the protected lagoon in front of the house - lots of fish and I have seen no less than 2 and up to 6 turtles resting on the bottom in 10 feet of water every time we get in. A short half mile stroll to the end of the road puts you at one of the best and largest beaches in Maui. We can’t wait until we are back in Makena in a couple of weeks !

                  Year Purchased: 1969

                  Why the Owner Chose Makena:
My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived there year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I have updated and kept decorated in the Hawaiian style.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.
