It just doesn't get any better than this! The house offers amazing views from all directions. The snorkeling and tide pools just steps from the back door is outstanding. We were swimming with the turtles the day we arrived. The sunrises and sunsets are truly stunning. We could go on and on but the best advice we can offer is: Rent this house!!!!!! Unless you experience it for yourself, you'll never experience a more private and beautiful piece of paradise.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

SelfishlyI hate to share this gem. This ocean front house comes with incredible views at any moment. We enjoy incredible sunrises and stunning sunsets. During the whale migration season, you can sit in the backyard and watch the whales breech. Every morning my father, son and I explore the tide pool. Everyday is an adventure. It is perfect for relaxing and easy to venture out for more activity. We have surfed at Kehei, zip lined at Pii Holo ranch amongst other activities. Without even venturing out you can snorkel with the fish and turtles right in front of the house. This is a quiet neighborhood so if you are looking for a party place, don't come here. The front room is large and perfect for families. Everything you need is there to eat in: microwave oven, refrigerator, stove, oven, and BBQ for grilling. The outside table is perfect for sunset meals. However, there are so many great local places to eat too that its hard to decide. The house is very clean and well maintained. The owners are great and the rental experience is a breeze. I absolutely recommend this property. We have gone for 3 years and plan to return for years to come.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our time at Makena Makai was priceless! We spent 10 days to celebrate our 10th anniversary and boy, did we pick well! The home is well appointed and very comfortable - the pictures do a great job of conveying what a lovely place this is. The location is perfect in a way that cannot be described - an unbelievable sunset spot (we have the 350+ sunset picture to prove it) with access to some of the best snorkeling around. You know it's a perfect vacation spot when over half way through your stay, you look at one another and ask, "Will we regret not going out more?" After grocery shopping, our time was spent hanging out at the house, watching the beautiful surf and sunsets, cooking in kitchen that was very well equipped and feeling as comfortable as we would at home. Many thanks to the owners for sharing their lovely home with us. We can't wait to plan a trip to return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We've stayed all over Maui on previous trips and had noted this home on a previous trip while visitig the Congregational church and from the water while snorkeling in turtleville around Makena, so we had an idea it was an ideal location - it has an old Hawaii aloha feel by location and setting. When we found the home as a rental on VRBO we knew it was a gem. Our week long stay far surpassed our expectations. The home is in a quiet pristine setting - every window view is a postcard picture - outside there are many comfortable areas to take it all in - a lovely garden, outdoor furniture, and dining patio that overlooks the broken surf - the waves are broken by a rocky fingered peninsula that somehow supports three trees - it provides a small wonderland for adventuring right at your doorstep - this creates a gentle bay that is easy to swim and snorkel in - we did so at least twice a day - the water is warm and clear with may tropical fish and abundant green sea turtles - the coral reefs within Makena coastline are as clear and vibrant as on Molokini - you can easily swim to Makena landing and even out to five graves/five caves if you are a capable swimmer from the home. You can easily walk to several beaches, a wetland bird sanctuary, tidepools...all are incredible areas just a stone's throw from the megaresorts and so rarely explored by other tourists - I felt like we had the best of Hawaii all to ourselves. We had daily entertainment from grey whales - tailslapping, breeching, and you could even hear them singing while snorkeling along the coastline. Sublime! Besides the incredible flora and fauna - we had jumbo bullfrogs and gecko singing every night - the home was more than adequate, furnishings/bedding/mattresses very comfortable, kitchen was well-equipped, grill in working order, electronics and wi-fi accessible, lots of water toys...rooms and accommodations were exactly as billed on the website, the key was location - this is a family vacation home and the home's soul has the feel of love and heritage that you don't get in an overthetop resort. We plan on returning annually as long as this home is available!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

This home is just that, a home poised right on the coast of paradise. We have stayed at Makena before, but this house provides a amazing experience to really feel like you have a residence on the island. The house is both convenient and private, both characteristics we look for when we travel to Maui. Arrangements and arrival were made very easy and slipping into vacation time was simple. The home is well stocked, clean and well maintained. Of the Makena properties we have stayed at, this home is closest to what I would like to have if I moved to the island. The photos shown in this listing are quite accurate and the views from the windows better than what you see in the photos. If you like snorkelling, there are many great place within a few minutes of the house. If you like privacy, the location relative to other residence makes this house a cut above other rentals on the same road. The location in Makena and this home made our trip a tough one to end.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

While preparing for our 4th trip to this heavenly house in Makena, I thought it only appropriate that I publicly offer a thousand 'Thanks' to the owner for preserving her childhood home in such wonderful condition and especially for allowing us to call it 'home' for a couple of weeks a year ! The house is very comfortable and extremely well stocked. Three bedrooms and three baths means there is plenty of space for everyone. The grounds are gorgeous with lots of outdoor seating and easy access to the water. There is no better location on Maui than this little dead-end road and this house in Makena - providing that you want to be ocean front and Not surrounded by hundreds of people. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting here in the back yard and watching dozens of humpback whales in the ocean in front of you. I’m convinced that the best snorkeling spot on Maui is in the protected lagoon in front of the house - lots of fish and I have seen no less than 2 and up to 6 turtles resting on the bottom in 10 feet of water every time we get in. A short half mile stroll to the end of the road puts you at one of the best and largest beaches in Maui. We can’t wait until we are back in Makena in a couple of weeks !Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

My daily activities involve interpersonal interactions with extreme cognitive focusing. When I escape from this with my family, I seek peace, tranquility, and freedom from the "world". I have leased many places around the globe, apartments in Paris, Rome, New York, homes in Oahu and Maui. Often, after vacation I need another week of rest. Makena has been the exception! There was no set time for any activity, it occurred when it occurred. Time stood still. Sipping coffee while watching turtles feast in the morning was magical. Skirting into the sea, alone, from your own private shore is magical. Watching the sunset in all its glory with your family from your private "natural balcony" is soul piercing and melting all at the same time. Champagne breakfast, and mimosas in the morning with fresh papya and pineapple with the early ocean salty breeze is very special and a great beginning to the day. Time comes and rolls and leaves just like the waves. This is peace. This is escape. This is how recharging of spiritual batteries occurs so one can continue their life, their challenges. The home in Makena is simple, making it a perfect part of the environment. It has all the space to accomodate a family of 5. Living here one feels very "local" very "hawaiian." All the photos are very accurate of the property, sadly the only thing that can not be captured and displayed is the ocean peace-which is pure and elegant. Best of all, however, are the owners. They are kind, caring and turly want to share their little piece of earthly heaven with those that truly want to experience it. I can honestly say that this was the first, time I have vacationed and have returned home rested, recharged, at peace, spiritually and mentally. I can not wait to return to the sea...............Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.

This is an incredible spot. Located in a quiet neighborhood of modest homes you really feel like you're in old Hawaii. There's a beautiful coral reef right in front of the house where you can snorkel with several Green Sea Turtles that have made this spot their home. You can watch breaching whales from the backyard and enjoy the gorgeous Maui sunsets every evening with pupu's and cocktails. Restaurants and resorts are plentiful in nearby Wailea and a short drive to Kihei provides all other needs. A great beach is a five minute walk from the house. This is the fourth year in a row that we have rented this house and we always want to come back.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Why the Owner Chose Makena:
My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived there year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I have updated and kept decorated in the Hawaiian style.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.
