Keywords:  Lovely Colonial Home with Beautiful Gardens in a Highly Desirable Neighborhood Near the Splendid Botanical Garden

San Miguel de Allende rental home Casa del Canto (House of Song) offers a peaceful and unique environment in a beautiful neighborhood. The vibrant produce and crafts market is a short walk downhill and the Jardin, the epicenter of life in San Miguel de Allende, is about a 12-15 minute walk from the casa. Nearby, you will discover a wealth of colonial architecture, courtyard restaurants, intriguing shops, and language/art schools. The casa offers convenient access to the nearby acclaimed Botanical Garden. There you will find a visitors center, a self-guided nature trail showcasing native plants, lakeside strolling, acres of hiking trails and birds galore.

Our fully furnished, light filled, and private 8 year old Colonial home was architect-designed with a modern sensibility. Its 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths on two levels comfortably accommodate five adults. We renovated the interior design and repainted the house using rich Mexican colors. Large terracotta floor tiles provide rustic charm, and Latin-flavored artwork graces the walls throughout the home.

On the main level is a spacious great room that combines living, dining, and kitchen areas. The classic equipale sofas and chairs surround a large coffee table. The colorful dining room table seats six. An additional four guests can sit at the adjacent breakfast bar. The spacious kitchen is equipped for your cooking needs.

There is a lovely landscaped front yard which boasts a huge lime tree - perfect for making margaritas! Two arched cast iron and glass doors lead from the living room to a shaded backyard patio where you can enjoy an al fresco lunch or barbecue. The grassy lawn in the backyard is the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic.

Also on the first level is the master bedroom, outfitted with a new Sealy pillowtop king bed with high quality cotton linens, ceiling fan, dresser, entertainment center (with TV, DVD, CD/tape player and stereo) and a cozy rocking chair. The large master bath has a colorful talavera tiled bathtub and built-in closets. The half bath on the first floor has a traditional tile design and quatrefoil window.

Ascend the staircase that is sheltered by a tall rectangular boveda (or curved brick) ceiling with arched windows. The two bedrooms on the second floor each have a soaring boveda ceiling with overhead fan and lighting, built-in closets, and an attached balcony. The larger balcony overlooks the distinctive neighborhood and botanical garden and has a cast iron and tile patio set. The smaller balcony offers a chaise lounge and a view of the neighbor’s extensive garden.

One of the bedrooms has two twin beds, an attractive desk and an original oil painting by a Mexican artist. The other room is set up as a studio/guest bedroom with a hand-carved daybed and sitting area, featuring a new pillowtop mattress, rocking chair and talavera-tiled table, and a desk with handcarved chair. All beds have cozy fine cotton linens, plump pillows, duvets, quilts and lightweight blankets. The bathroom sports a cheery tiled shower and dark terracotta walls with another quatrefoil window.

The secure gated parking area accommodates one medium-sized car (although taxis are plentiful). Weekly maid and garden service is included in the rental. Utilities included except for cell and long distance phone calls and excessive gas/electricity use. Children ten (10) years and older welcome. Younger children and/or pet possible with owner’s approval. No smoking allowed.

This wonderful home is in excellent condition, with delightful areas to relax in both indoors and outdoors, and a superb staff. Please consider visiting outside of the high season - the climate is temperate, traffic is lighter and there is always something interesting going on. (It is said that there are only 11 days in San Miguel when there is NOT a festival.)

We'd like to share the following comments from previous guests:
My stay at Casa del Canto was just what I was looking for. The neighborhood is very safe and quiet. The house is kept impeccably clean by the charming housekeeper. This very spacious house is wonderfully decorated, with amazingly artistic Boveda ceilings, custom authentic tile work and a delightful backyard garden retreat - it had everything I needed! I think anyone would thoroughly enjoy their stay at Casa del Canto. - D Higgins, Sedona
Normally when I have chosen a vacation home on the Internet it is oversold. Casa del Canto was everything you said it would be and more. Talk about location! The house was within walking distance of El Jardin and close to the large botanical garden with indigenous plants. What a delight! We met many wonderful people in San Miguel and your house was perfect for entertaining. The large living room/dining room was well furnished with authentic Mexican pieces. The art work was a special touch. My wife particularly liked the backyard patio, which was great for privacy and relaxing. We really could not have had a nicer home and location. When we are back in San Miguel again, your house will be the first one we inquire about. Thanks again. - L Zedwick, Portland
We loved your casa! The house was beautifully decorated, very clean and had everything we needed for our stay. We especially enjoyed the backyard patio and yard. We all agreed we would love to return to your house and San Miguel de Allende. - J Cutting, Shoreline, WA
Casa del Canto was encantada! Above the city, quiet nights, cool neighborhood, and a lovely walk to town, it was a perfect way to spend our anniversary. The nearby botanical garden was unbelievable! There was so much to see and do that we'll have to plan another trip... D Thackeray, Carpinteria, CA
We walked into town every morning and evening and enjoyed the view along the way. Enjoyed listening to birds and church bells instead of car horns, and marveled at the simple life of the Jardin at night

Why the Owner Chose Balcones

I was fortunate to have amazing travel opportunities, working mostly as a volunteer in over 40 countries. I used to love going to new places practically every day and avidly avoided retracing my steps. So, after the first trip to San Miguel, I was surprised to find myself soon longing to return. San Miguel feels both comfortable and mysteriously intriguing to me. One can access sophisticated amenities or travel more ruggedly off the beaten path. Most importantly, it is incredibly easy to find people to connect with here, even if I am travelling solo. Serendipity played a part: finding the right house in the right town where they speak the right language at the right time in my life.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Since the photos and description of our casa are extensive, let me highlight the nearby Botanical Garden. It is unlike any other area in San Miguel - all natural, peaceful and with lovely walking trails brimming with native plant species. It is a gardener's paradise! There is a lovely greenhouse with amazing cacti, a reservoir with great birdwatching and an outdoor cafe. The superb staff and volunteers periodically have guided tours, yoga classes, full moon ceremonies and even outdoor concerts in the canyon. Having the Botanical Garden so close makes our casa's location in lovely Los Balcones even more appealing.

Owner's Map of Balcones

My husband and I met for the first time years ago while traveling in Oaxaca, Mexico. Besides bestowing on me a wonderful life partner and second home, Mexico and its people have been the source of many delightful moments. We both speak Spanish and find it helpful in our work lives in the States. However, it is much more fun to travel to San Miguel with our teenage son and use our Spanish there!

We are ready to return to warm and sunny Mexico. We thoroughly enjoyed your house and San Miguel. The management company was great. They took care of anything we needed. The gardener, Jaime, was wonderful also. We didn't get to know Ana Marie very well because she had some health issues and her daughter,Gloria, came to clean for several weeks and did a good job. We look forward to returning to San Miguel next year and will contact you if we do. Once again,we enjoyed your house and thank you for your efforts. Jim& Pat

We are just back from our visit to San Miguel and I cannot thank you, thank you enough for our stay at your place. We absolutely fell in love with San Miguel and plan on returning - with friends and family in tow! Your house is lovely - tons of room for the two of us (we didn't even get to use those lovely upstairs rooms). We picked some limes on the outside tree to bring to some friends. We loved the neighborhood and area of your house as well. So wonderful - I can see why you fell in love with the place. Again, thank you so, so much. Your place definitely made us love SMA all the more. Cheers!

Our stay at Casa del Canto was really wonderful and surpassed our expectations - we loved it!!! The house is warm, comfortable, beautifully decorated and in an ideal location above the city next to the botanical garden. Every night the sunsets were marvelous. The house was large enough for 4 adults; we each found our "space" we enjoyed, from the patios to the two garden areas. The neighborhood is very charming. Casa del Canto was our "safe haven" during our wonderful San Miguel experience. Thank you ...

Hola! We have all safely returned from Casa del Canto and are much the richer for having experienced your wonderful home and San Miguel. The two weeks at your casa were as close to perfection as vacations can be. We loved the location - took a guided walk at the Charco Botanical Garden and participated in a full ceremony there later in the week. We sat in your lovely garden, read, ate al fresco meals and looked on with pleasure at all of your artistic touces. This is the kind of house we would have if we decided to follow your lead and add San Miguel to our retirement plans. Weather was great, fiestas were many and colorful, restaurants were uniformly excellent and reasonable. Again, muchas gracias!!!

Your casa was perfect! It was just the right size for our group of five. The location was terrific. Close enough to go anywhere and yet remote enough for doing nothing. The garden area was a favorite gathering spot at any time of day. The walk to the market and downtown was great. I loved being in town and out of town at the same time. The casa was also very quiet, which was so nice, but at the same time there was lots to see and hear and smell. Pretty cool! I think staying closer to downtown would not have been as peaceful, especially on the weekend. And I loved the view of the botanical gardens and the canyon from the upper floor balcony. Everything we needed was there and was easy to find. The guest binder was helpful. Thank you again for the great stay. P.S. I loved my pillow. Best sleep in ages ;)
