Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
I am a Colorado native and though I have traveled extensively, I think that what Colorado has to offer cannot be beat! As a public school teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students in Denver, CO, I enjoy my school holidays as much as I can in Breckenridge. I have two grown sons so I have the freedom to get away often. It is fun to share my little second home with guests from all over the country, some of whom have come back for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stays. My guests have treated my place gently--as if it were their own homes. I appreciate that!
Why the Owner Chose Brittany Place
I bought the Carriage House as an investment with an eye for the best value for the money. I scored! Everyone agrees that it is unique. I so enjoy spending summer days and evenings in Breckenridge. It is cool in the evenings and pleasantly warm in the day time. The view from my front door is gorgeous both winter and summer. The location is one of the best in town--across the street from the gondola--and incredibly close to shops, restaurants, bars, and the grocery store. It is so easy to get around from my location, I hardly ever get in my car except to go home to Denver.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
The Carriage House at Brittany Place is located in the Historic District of Breckenridge. In keeping with that theme, Brittany Place was developed in 1998 incorporating the historic Victorian design, which was typical of the architecture during the late 1800s when Breckenridge was a thriving mining town.
Inside the Carriage House, you will see some stained glass that was brought from England and was most likely created around 1860. The builder cleverly used the three panels—two in the dividers between the living area and dining area, and one inserted into the bathroom door.
The wood floor also has a unique history. Originally the wood came from the floor of the old wooden garage out back. When the structure was moved to its present location, is not known. But because it was going to be used as a garage when the property was purchased, instead of a residence, the builder removed the floor. He found that it was made of sturdy 4 x 4 planks. He had the wood milled to be tongue and groove for the floor in the Carriage House. In the process, he became aware that the old shack floor had probably been a wall somewhere else in Breckenridge, sometime during the 1890s, based on how structures were built in those days and the materials used. You can still see the marks in the wood from the old iron square nails used back then, which gives the floor its character.

My visit to Breckenridge was special and even more so by staying at Jan's Carriage House. It's a perfect accommodation for a solo traveler (or for a romantic getaway) and the location is unbeatable. This is the place to go if you want to avoid the ski resort atmosphere and prefer the quiet of a small town. The bonus to my stay was the visit from two red fox who took their daily rest on the snow pile in front of the house. I look forward to returning.
Owner response:Thank you for sharing the picture of the two red fox--very special. I hope other guests get to see them too. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and I look forward to hosting you again.

As newlyweds, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the Carriage House. It was just the right amount of space for the two of us, and we loved how close we were to some wonderful restaurants in town. We checked our skis at the base of Peak 8 every night and rode the Gondola to and from the mountain. It's a very short walk to the Gondola from the House, I would guess around 6-7 minutes at a casual pace. Jan was incredibly helpful, and the place was incredibly clean and comfortable. It would probably be a tight space for 4 adults, especially since there isn't any closet space. Having a garage was a great addition in the winter conditions, but having a garage door opener available to use would have been a big help!
Owner response:Thank you for your positive review and I am glad you enjoyed your stay and found it convenient and comfortable. I have found a garage door opener is not practical because they have a habit of accidentally walking away. But the garage is easy to open from just inside the people door on the north side. And there is a closet--I'm surprised you missed it! The armoire also provides storage, just in case future guests may be concerned.

My husband and I stayed for four nights at the Carriage House in late September. The house was exactly as it appears on the website. Very clean, beautifully decorated and just the right size for the two of us. You were walking distance to everything in town. Best restaurant was Embers. Jan was very easy to deal with and very accommodating. Would highly recommend the Carriage House.
Owner response:I am so happy to hear that my Carriage House was just right for the two of you. It's nice to know that you enjoyed the Embers as well. I will have to try it out!

This is a perfect couple's retreat, just a half-block east of Main Street. A cozy, quaint retreat, yet steps from all the action. Very clean and well-maintained. Owner was very helpful in arranging accommodations. Highly recommended.

My mother and I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed staying in your little house. It was wonderfully located, perfectly situated (with the pine and Aspen trees) and was charming outside and within. We enjoyed how much character there was on the inside and how quiet it was. It was warm and welcoming as soon as we stepped in the door. The weather was beautiful and we are very happy we got our trip in before the snow yesterday morning. Colorado is perfect and lovely in the summer--except for the little surprises in the weather! You picked the perfect town to have a rental. Breckenridge has become our favorite place to visit in Colorado. Your house has become our favorite of all the rentals we have stayed in.

The Carriage House is a wonderful place to stay. Clean and sweetly decorated, and close enough to walk to everything. My husband and I love CO and this was our first time in Breck - we will be back. Thanks for everything. We have referred the Carriage House to family and I'm pretty certain they have already booked.
Owner response:I'm hoping future guests will find my Carriage House as inviting. I look forward to hosting your family and many happy skiers this winter!

I was staying at the Carriage House again at Thanksgiving. This time i stayed for three days. The new improvements that Jan has made are really nice. I can't tell you how comfortable the new bed is! It's nice to be able to sleep really well after a hard day skiing. This place is quiet .... nobody above or below. The first time I was there she didn't have the garage available -- this time I didn't have to scrape the windshield or get into a cold car. The garage was heated and I stored my skis there. I didn't use my car the whole time I was there because I brought enough food or walked to restaurants. I'm sure I will be back.
