We have a few villa holidays in normandy over the last few years. There are three couples and the men usually play a bit more golf than the girls. This villa not only provided excellant accomodation but also had a nice patio area with pool so the girls could relax there and read with a nice glass of wine at hand, without doubt the nicest we have rented. All the rooms were superb and a lot of thought had gone into the design and lay out. We found Debbie and James most helpful and keen to make sure we had everything we wanted. The surrounding area was very pleasant and peaceful with a lovely beach nearby. All the bedrooms were very comfortable and nicely furnished, each had an en suite bathroom which the girls feel is paramount when staying away with other couples. I was so impressed that I am seriously considering a return next year to celebrate my wifes 60th birthday, this time with our children and grandchildren. I would recommend this villa to anybody without hesitation, in fact I already have.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+.

This was our first visit to Normandy with our 2 year old son and when we arrived at the property we were met by Debbie who was charming and very helpful. She showed us around La Brocanterie which was even more lovely than in the photographs, a really beautiful property, in a quiet yet convenient position and immaculately presented with everything you could possibly want, along with a great record collection(!) and lots of space to chill out!! The swimming pool was warm and the electric cover was a plus for our toddler. We visited several local restaurants that were recommended which were excellent, but our favourite was La Cale, we loved the food and informality! We were well placed for doing day trips to Granville and Mont St Michel and then returning in time to have a swim. We are definitely planning to visit again in 2013 but hopefully for longer than a week! Thank you Debbie and James.Owner response: Thank you both so much for your lovely comments. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to La Brocanterie! Debbie

My husband, three younger children and I had a wonderful stay. We arrived on Easter Sunday, and Debbie greeted us with a bright smile, in addition to a welcome basket and beautiful Easter bucket for the kids. Since stores were closed, she also did some grocery shopping for us. A huge help after a long journey! The pictures shown do not do the house justice. It was impeccably decorated, spotless and had absolutely everything we needed. During the couple of rainy days we had, we enjoyed the fireplace, good books, old records, DVDs and games in the playroom. In the house book, there are plenty of suggestions for things to do. There are also a variety of brochures and maps; we didn't even need to call the owners to ask any questions. The home is in a peaceful, remote location, and for the first time in many years, we really felt as though we were away from it all and could relax! Beaches are a very short drive from the house, and the sights we wanted to see (Mont Saint-Michel and Omaha Beach/The American Cemetery Memorial, etc.) were easy day trips. Unfortunately, it was too cool to use the pool but we found plenty to do despite this. We are seriously considering coming back with friends or family and have already recommended the house to others. A hidden gem!Owner response: Thank you so much for your lovely comments. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you all and I hope we might have the pleasure of seeing you again one day. Debbie

We are a family of 4 adults who stayed at La Brocanterie for the last week of September 2011. We could not have chosen a more beautiful week weather wise with temperatures reaching 32C+. The fabulous pool and pool area, which was almost secluded, was well used by us. The kitchen/dining area was exceptionally large, light, airy and well equipped. The 2 double bedrooms we used, both with en-suite facilities were comfortable and modern. The house had every modern amenity you could think of at your disposal. The files of information about the house and the area were very useful. Debbie, the co-owner, was extremely helpful and offered to provide us with groceries for our arrival and booked a table for us at a very nice restaurant overlooking the sea at Pirou. The property is well placed for visits to many places of interest, the beaches are great and whether travelling to/from Cherbourg or Caen, is very accessible with good roads. The village of Gouville sur mer can provide most of your provisions (the lovely fresh bread and pastries especially) and there are several large supermarkets not far away. If we were to return to Normandy again (this was our third trip to the region) we would certainly consider returning to La Brocanterie!Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

It's taken us a bit of time to come back to earth after our amazing stay at this fabulous property! We are a family of 5 - 3 children aged 9, 7 and 5 and we stayed at La Brocanterie in late August 2011. It was a truly special holiday and a truly special place to stay - we did not stay for long enough! The house is a stunning example of how a lovely old property can be renovated to produce a simply stunning combination of modern and antique. The sitting room, play room, dining room and master bedroom are all beautifully and tastefully constructed in a traditional French style, whilst the kitchen and 3 bedrooms are throughly modern. The combination works exceptionally well. We spent most of our time in the kitchen and the pool. The pool is lovely; heated (a help in the sometimes chancy Normandic weather) and overlooked by the kitchen (a help for parents wanting to keep an eye on smalls swimming). The kitchen is well equipped and has a window and glass doors which open fully so that the impression is one of being outside. The master bedroom is a triumph; beautifully decorated and with a truly spoiling bathroom. Wifi, UK satellite channels, a small mountain of games, stereo in the kitchen all add up to a smashing place to stay rain or shine. The area is great fun; France always offers good, cheap wine and smelly, delicious cheese either from the supermarket or from the lovely little village of Gouville-sur-Mer. The coast is fab and we can strongly recommend a shack-like restaurant on the beach (Debbie thoughtfully provides all the details in her fantastically well informed book of blurb). We had a great afternoon picking moules from the rocks and then cooking them at home (I say 'home' - it wasn't, of course, sadly, but it felt just as if it was). Towels, washing powder, salt, dishwasher tablets and all the nitty gritty that one just does not want to bother having to think about are all there and it is the sort of place where one just doesn't mind leaving the end of a tub of herbs or a couple of pads for the Senseo machine because you know they are going to a good home. Its dead easy to get to the Cherbourg Ferry and Debbie also lets another beautiful house almost next door making it an ideal location for friends who want to holiday together but also want a little space. PUKKA, SUPERB, FANTASTIC! And the ultimate accolade - we would absolutely, definitely, unquestionably stay again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

When we were looking for a good quality place to stay for our 1st driving holiday to France, La Brocanterie just jumped off the page in terms of facilities, general appearance and location. On arrival at the property, it did not disappoint and totally lived up to it's description. Debbie the owner was there to meet us, and gave us a tour of the house and all the info we would need for our 2 weeks there. The property is extremely clean and well-appointed and had plenty of space for the 7 of us who were staying there - there is a space for everyone! The swimming pool is heated and fabulous and we spent most afternoons using it, when the sun was shining. Gouville sur Mer is a charming little town, with a market twice weekly in the summer months, which we made full use of. The beach at Gouville is completely unspoilt, yet a hive of activity, whether it's tractors towing boats to and from the see or windsurfers etc. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone, and we loved it so much, we have booked again for 2012!Recommended for: Families with teenagers.

We, our two children (19 & 17) and my mother had a fantastic week at Easter in this wonderful property and loved it so much that we are returning next Easter. The house is beautifully renovated and decorated, very spacious and by far the best equipped property we have ever rented. It was even better than in the description. We couldn't get our teenagers out of the wonderful showers in all 3 superb bathrooms! The kitchen is huge and was a pleasure to cook in and directly overlooked the good sized heated pool and large deck area. There is also an enclosed courtyard which made an excellent sunny area for breakfast, as well as for bike storage. It is located in a peaceful, yet not isolated location and is a couple of mins drive (or very pleasant 10 min cycle) from the delightful unspoilt, typically French town of Gouville-sur-mer which has an excellent range of small shops, including a small supermarket, cafes, etc. We did not need to go to a large supermarket at all during our stay - everything we needed was available locally including an excellent local market. Just a couple of km further on is the beautiful beach - busy with shellfish gatherers while we were there. We had fabulous weather while we were there which meant we mainly enjoyed the house, pool and local walks and cycles from the area but did enjoy a visit to Mont St Michel, Bayeaux and the Regional Nature Park - Marais du Contentin where we were fortunate enough to see white storks as well as many other birds. There are many places to explore nearby and we plan to do those next year particularly if the weather is not so good! Debbie and James were always at hand to help and advise us and we would recommend this property to anyone.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My wife, son (16) and mother and law had a wonderfully sunny and peaceful week in La Brocanterie. La Brocanterie has recently been renovated and blends successful the old (wooden beams and rustic stonewalls) with the new, (elegant and modern bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen). There is a tremendous sense of space in house and we particularly enjoyed spending time in the airy and bright kitchen with the sun streaming in from all sides. An important feature for was the thoughtful laid out and large downstairs bedroom and en-suite bathroom that suited my mother-in-law very well. The decked pool area seemed to get the sun all day and it was all too easy to while away the afternoon there after lunching on fresh cheeses, bread, fruit and wine from one of the many daily markets in the nearby towns. La Brocanterie, also proved to be a good base from which to explore the Normandy beaches and many pleasant seaside towns along the coast. If you are looking to get away from it all and to wind down by the pool or sea in a thoughtful converted Gite with a pool then La Brocanterie is the place to be'.Did you find this review helpful? We visited La Brocanterie at the end of June 2010, our party consisted of 3 couples (6 adults) and a 2 year old. My husband and I spent a week with our daughter and both sets of grandparents and had a wonderful time. We spent some time visiting the local towns and beaches, but the majority of our time was spent relaxing, eating and swimming at the property. Gouville Sur Mer is only a few minutes’ drive away, and the village has everything you’ll need and really lovely boulangerie. Debbie and James were extremely friendly and made sure that we had everything we needed for the week and a welcome pack provided us with all the information we required. The property has been sympathetically restored and very tastefully finished with a contemporary French feel – it exceeded our expectations! It felt particularly spacious considering there were six adults. The kitchen /breakfast area is a superb entertaining space, and an extensive range of kitchen equipment is provided. The courtyard provided a safe and secure space for our daughter to play in and the upstairs could be easily shut off to stop her wandering! The play room had a lovely selection of toys to occupy her and she became very fond of the dolls house. Our daughter had the choice of either a travel cot or standard metal cot and whilst she had her own bedroom, there is plenty of space within the bedrooms to accommodate a small person! The heated swimming pool is an excellent size and we thoroughly enjoyed using it. In terms of safety, an electric hard pool cover provides peace of mind for young children. There is a wonderful decked area poolside with plenty of sun loungers for all guests. The kitchen has sliding windows which allowed the designated chef of the day to feel involved with everyone outside. There is plenty of off road parking (we had two cars). We can’t stop talking to people about how wonderful La Brocanterie is, and we will definitely return for another holiday in the future – we highly recommend it!Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We arrived late evening to be welcomed by Debbie and James who showed us around the large property. The layout was ideal for our two families (4 adults and 5 teenage children). Every room was spacious, clean and well equipped. The bathrooms, shower and toilet facilities were more than adequate to accomodate all of us. Luckily, the weather was kind to us and the sun came out everyday - bar one in the fourteen days we stayed. The children spent most of the time in the good sized pool. We recommend the beaches in the area as they are large, empty of people and clean. Gouville is a quiet town with a small range of shops to cater for most needs and the larger shops/supermarket are only a short drive away. Overall, our stay was very relaxing and enjoyable. We definitely recommend this house for a getaway from it all holiday. A little knowledge of the french language would be helpful and the information supplied by Debbie and James was very useful.Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
